VALVE-OPERATING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. Ponscn, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in valve operating devices, of the class used in connection with flushing tanks, and the object of the improvement is to provide a simple device of its class in which the operation, for which it is intended, may be effected by moving the handle either upward or downward. This object is accomplished by the construction illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, in section, showing the operating mechanism in connection with a flushing tank; Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the valve lever in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the operating levers in relative arrangement; and Fig. 4 is a detail showing a front elevation of the supporting bracket for the operating levers.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and referring now to the same :1 is a flushing tank, and 2 is its lining.
3 is a valve that rests upon a seat 1 within the tank and closes the discharge outlet 5 of the tank. The outlet has in connect-ion therewith an over-flow pipe 6.
The construction of the outlet and overflow pipe, the valve 3, its stem 7 and guide 8, the valve lever 9 and link 10, are of known construction and constitute the apparatus which the present invention is intended to operate.
The invention comprises the two levers 11 and 12 respectively, suitably mounted, and connected with the apparatus to be operated. The lever 11 is of the third class Specification of Letters Patent.

and has a fulcrum pin 13 at one end secured in the bracket 14. The rear end of the lever 11 has connection with one end of the valve lever 9 by means of a rod 15 that extends up through an opening 16 in the tank 1. The hand lever 12 has a lateral stud 17 that extends through the lever 11 at a point thereon between its ends, and the hand lever, when pulled upward by its handle 18, acts as a lever of the first-class, its fulcrum being the pin 13; and when pushed downward, acts as a lever of the second class, its fulcrum being the bearing 19 at the rear part of the bracket. The result of either operation is that the rear end of the lever 11 is forced downward, thus actuating the valve lever, and in turn, the valve connected therewith.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an operating device, a bracket having a pin at its forward end and a bearing point at its rear end; a lever of the thirdclass having said pin as a fulcrum at one of its ends, and a hand lever having pivotal connection with the lever of the third class between its ends and being adapted to op erate when pulled upward as a lever of the first-class, and when pushed downward as a lever of the second-class.
2. In a device of the class described, a bracket having two bearing parts arranged respectively at its ends, an actuating lever having pivotal connection in the bracket, an operating lever having pivotal connection with the actuating lever and adapted to fulcrum against one of said bearing parts when moved downward and against the other bearing part when moved upward.
