Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, CHARLES HENRY WURs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invent-ion relates to stoves and more particularly to the construction of the lower part of the same.
An object of the invention is to form the main portion of the base and the ash box integral, with air passages between the base and the ash box and to provide an upper part for the base to direct air between the outer casing of the stove and the fire-pot or combustion chamber.
A further object is to provide a base especially adapted for use in connection with stoves of the t-ype to which my co-pending application, Serial Number 654,591 relates.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1, is a top plan view of the improved forni of base, Fig. 2, is a bottom plan view thereof, Fig. 3, is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-8, Fig. 1, Fig. 4, is a similar View at right angles to Fig. 3, taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5, is a view similar to Fig'. 1, the upper detachable portion of the base be ing removed, and, Fig. 6, is a bottom plan view of the removableV upper plate of the base.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the lower or main portion of the base which may be square or of any preferred form and has its lower edge 2 flared outwardly to rest upon a floor or support upon the floor. The sides of the base 1 are preferably vertical and extending inwardly from the upper edge of three of the sides are connecting straps 3, to the opposite ends of which is connected the plate 4 forming the top of the ash box 5, said ash boX 5 depending from the plate 4, within the base 1, as will be clearly seen by referring to the drawings. The connecting straps 8 may be of such size as to have their inner ends connected with the upper portion of the ash box 5, as well as with the plate 4, if desired. The straps 3 are suitably spaced from one another and are preferably located at the corners and suitable distances between the corners, the corner straps 3 having suitable bolt openings 6 extending vertically therethrough. The purpose of these openings will later appear. The fourth side of the base l and the corresponding side of the ash box 5 are cut away and the same are provided with a suitable opening 7 through which the ash box may be readily cleaned of its contents and which is adapted to be closed by a suitable door (not shown). This side will hereafter be termed the front side. The central portion of the plate 4 is raised and provided with the large circular opening 8 from which depend the right angled grate supporting arms 9 for supporting the grate immediately above the ash-pot. The upper circular edge 10 of the plate 4 is enlarged and provided in its upper face with the circular groove 11 to receive the lower edge of a fire-pot of any suitable construe tion. The front portion of the plate 4 is also raised to a plane slightly below that of the upper circular edge 10. The raised front portion is indicated by the numeral 12 and is provided with the arc shaped flange 18 extending upwardly therefrom, slightly forwardly of the upper curved or circular edge 10 of the ash box. The raised front portion 12 has the long straight front edge 14 and the short side edges 15 which are connected with the long front edge 14 by the short forward portion 16 and with the raised central portion of the plate 4 by the short straight connecting edges 17. The side edges 15 are positioned at angles of about 45 degrees to the short connecting portions 16 and 17 and if continued, would meet at about the center of the circular opening 8. At suitable points along the side edges 15 are Vlocated the enlargements 18 through which the vertical bolt passages 19 extend to accommodate the bolts (not shown), the purpose of which will be later stated. A suitable opening 20 is provided through the raised front portion 12 to allow air directed downwardly through any suitable downdraft throat, having its lower edge secured around the opening 20, to enter the ash box 5 for upward travel through the grate of the stove, as will be clearly understood.
' portion of the section The outer portion of the upper edge of the base 1 is cut away to form the seat 21 around the back and sides of the base and this seat is continued alo-ng-the edges 15 of the front raised portion 12. The purpose of this seat is to accommodate the removable top section 22 of the base, the edges of the section 22 resting upon the seat 21, and being flush with the upper surface of the upper raised portion 12. Suitable bolts 23 are passed through openings provided therefor in the section 22 and through the'bolt openings 6 and 19. Suitable nuts 24 are secured upon the threaded ends of the bolts 23 and thus the top section 22 is securely fastened in position upon the base 1. The section 22 is of such form as to rest a short distance above the straps 3 and the air passages bet-Ween4 said straps and the central portion of said section is cut away to provide a central opening somewhat larger than the upper circular edge 10 of the ash box 5. The front 22 is also cut away to correspond with the upper raised portion 12, the cut away portion of the front of the section 22 being of the same size and form as the front raised portion 12 of the top plate 4t, the converging edges 25 llit yagainst the edges 15 'and the short straight edges 26 and 27 connecting with the edges 25 which engage against the short straight edges 16 and 17 respectively, when the top section 22 is in position upon the base 1. Carried upon the inner face of the top section 22 and located at suitable distances along the three sides thereof are the fingers 2Sv which depend slightly below the lower edge of said section and engage against the inner face of the corresponding Vsides of the base 1, adjacent the upper edge thereof. The lingers 28 serve to securely hold the top section 22 in proper position and prevent movement thereof after said section Vhas been placed upon the base 1. Near the inner circular edge 29 of the top section 22, is the upwardly directed flange 30 projecting from the upper face ofthe section and connecting with the flange 13 upon the raised front portion 12 to form the complete circular flange, which is adapted to rest against the circular outer casing (not shown) of the next section of the stove. The casing of the stove fits against the face of the flange toward the upper circular edge 10 of the ash box plate l and may be held in position by boltsor other suitable securing means (not shown) passed therethrough and through the perforated ears 31 extending upwardly vfrom the flange 30. The top section 22 is preferably provided with a rigid bracket arm 32 projecting from one front corner thereof and having a suitable perforation 33 which assumes a position directly above the hinge opening 311 within the flared lower edge 2 of the base 1. The'purpose of this perforated bracket arm 32 and the opening 3l therebeneath is to accommodate a hinge pin upon which the door to the ash ybox may be hingedly carried. lt will thus be seen that the upper section 22 coperates with the upper edge 10 of the plate d, serving to l hold the next section of the stove in proper position above the base 1. lt will also be evident that as the central opening in the upper section 22 is of a diameter somewhat greater than that of the upper circular edge 10, the air directed upwardly between the base 1 and the ash box 5 will vbe allowed lto circulate from the front corners of the base or rather from one short edge 17, around the circular upper edge 10 tothe other edge 17 and then upwardly between the outer casing, resting against the flanges 13 and 30 and the fire-pot, the lower edge of which rests within the groove 11. Between the casing and fire-pot vhe air .may Vbe thoroughly heated to be later utilized for heating the roomvor compartment within which the stove is situated.
1t will be evident that the base 1 may be positioned upon any suitable support to allow the free circulation of air therebeneath so that the same may readily lfind its way between the base 1 and the ash-*box 5 to travel upwardly therebetween through the air heating chamber or chambers provided between the fire-pot and the outer casing of the stove. lt will also be apparent that a portion of the air after being heated between the fire-pot and stove casing, may be directed downwardly through any suitable form o-f down draft throat and through the opening in the raised front portion 12 of the plate 4: to enter the ash box 5 and travel upwardly through the grate supported upon the right angled grate supporting arms 9. As the lire-pot, casing and down draft form no part of this invention, however, and may be of any suitable type, it has been deemed unnecessary to illustrate the same in this application.
This improved form of base and ash box, formed of two pieces may be employed in connection with stoves of various types and will be highly efficient and effective in the performance of its dut-ies.
It will thus be seen that 1 have'produced a combined stove base and ash box'of improved type and which may be employed to support the upper sections of stoves of various types. It will also be evident that this form of twov part combined stove base and ash box may be manufactured at a small cost, thus greatly reducing the cost of manufacturing and marketing the stove, employ ing this form of combined-'base and ash box.
What l claim is A device of the class described comprising a stove base, an ash box within said base and spaced therefrom, spaced straps/formed integral with said base and box, and conneoting the upper edges thereof, a top for said box having a central opening therein, a portion of said top between the front of said box and said opening being raised and provided With a second opening, a removable plate positioned over said base and spaced from said top and having an opening therein of greater diameterthan the opening in said top, said plate being out away to receive the raised portion of said top, and means for securing said parts together.
