Be it known that 1, JAMES A. Gmsr., a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to padlocks and has kfor its object to provide a lock of this character which shall be more reliable in operation and of improved construction and which shall permit of an increased number of deviations in the form of key required to open the same.
The invention is exemplified in the structure to be hereinafter described and which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a padlock embodying the features of improvement provided by the invention, the front wall of the lock casing being removed to show the internal construction; Fig. 2 is similar to Fig. 1 but shows the parts of the lock in a different position; Fig. 3 is also similar to Fig. 1 but illustrates the lock with some of j the operative parts of the mechanism removed; Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views taken on the lines 4-4 and 5-5 respectively of Fig. 1; Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views showing details of the operative mechanism of the padlock.
The invention is illustrated as being embodiedin a padlock having a chambered casing 10 of usual shape and a shackle 11 which is pivoted to the walls of the casing at 12. The point of the shackle 11 is adapted to enter the chamber of the casing through an opening 14 in an end wall of the same and has the usual bolt receiving aperture 13 adjacent its end. f
In carrying out the invention a jointed bolt is preferably provided for securing the end of the shackle within the chamberof the casing 10. As shown, this bolt comprises a pivoted member 15 and a longitudinally slidable member 16 both housed within the chamber of the casing 10. The pivoted member 15 swings upon a stationary pivot 17 and is provided with a hook 18 upon one of its ends, which hook enters the aperture 13 in the end of the shackle when the lock is closed. The pivoted member 15 and sliding member 16 are operatively connected whereby the sliding of the member 16 turns the member 15 upon its pivot. .Arsy shown, this connection takes Vthe form of a pin 19 which projects from a side -face of the member 16 and 4moves in a slotted opening 20 in the member 15. The bolt members are normally retained in position for securing the end of the shackle by means 'of a spring 21. This spring is preferably coiled about the pivot 17 and has its opposite ends reacting respectively upon a stationary stop 22 and upon the pin 19.
The sliding bolt member 16 is provided with a shoulder as 23, (Figs. 3 and 7) for engagement by the bit 24 of a key 25 for moving the bolt members against the effort of the spring 21, to open the lock. Tumblers, as 26, which may be of any well known construction and of which any usual number may be used, are provided to prevent the movement of the bolt members except by the use of a properly formed key. As shown, the tumblers are provided with slotted recesses 27 adapted to receive a stud 28 on the bolt member 16 when brought into register with said stud bythe bit of the key in the usual way. Provision is also made for securing the bolt members 15, 16 in open position, when the shackle 11 has been released. As shown, a bridge plate 29 is provided for this purpose. This bridge plate swings upon a stationary pivot 30 and normally bears against the end of the shackle 11 to swing the shackle upon the pivot 12 when the bolt members are released. To this end, the bridge plate 29 is moved in one direction by a spring, as 31. This spring may take the form usually employed for the operation of lock tumblers, and as shown has one end fixed in an end of the bridge plate 29 adjacent the pivot 30, as at 32, the other end of the spring being adapted to react against a fixed part of the lock casing, as the shoulder 33, to raise the bridge plate.
The swinging of the bridge plate 29 about the pivot 30 is preferably limited in each direction, as by providing the free end of the same with a slotted opening 311 through which the pivot 17 extends.
