Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. KOHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
'My invention relates to certain improvements in looks used in connection with fare boxes, but it will be understood that it may be used for other purposes without departing from the essential features of the invention.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective lock which will engage and firmly hold a sliding lid to the body of the fare box or other receptacle.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1, is a perspective view of the rear of the lock; Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the front of the lock; Fig. 3, is a sectional view on the line 33, Fig. 4:; Fig. 4, is a sectional view on the line 4=4, Fig. 3; Fig. 5, is a perspective view showing the main elements of the lock detached; Fig. 6, is a perspective view of the keeper; Figs. 7 and 8, are views of modifications of my invention, and Fig. 9, is a view of a fare box showing my improved lock.
A is the main plate of the lock having a flange a at its upper edge and a quadrangular opening a in the present instance through which the keeper B passes when the lid to which the keeper is attached is closed.
C is the casing of the lock secured to the plate by screws 0 in the present instance, and C is an extension of this casing inclosing the tumblers and washers of the lock.
D is a hub which extends through the lock and has a key-way cl therein and secured to the end of this hub is the cam D which actuates the two bolts E, shown clearly in Fig. 5.
The detail construction of the hub, tumblers and washers I have omitted as they form no part of the present invention and may be constructed in any manner common to a type of lock in which the tumblers are carried by a cylindrical projection, as shown.
The two bolts E-E are pivotally mounted on pins e-e secured to the casing of the lock, and their upper ends e engage the keeper which is projected through the opening a. Each bolt is notched at 6 so as to accommodate the fixed plate a projecting from the plate A at the base of the opening a. This plate a prevents tampering with the look as it closes the space between the sides of the casing O. Back of each bolt E is a spring F. These springs tend to force the bolts toward each other. The cam D which is mounted on the hub D is located between the two bolts, as shown in Fig. 3, and the enlarged portions d press against the projections 71 on the bolts E when the hub is turned, forcing the jaws apart and releasing the keeper B. Stops (Z are formed on the cam to limit its movement. As soon as the enlarged portions d pass the projection 2' the springs F return the bolts to their normal position. The bolts can be forced apart by the arrow-head b of the keeper B and they will spring back of the arrow-head, holding the keeper in position until spread apart when the key is inserted and turned.
In Fig. 7, I have illustrated a modification of the lock in which a single bolt is used instead of a double bolt, and in this case an arrow-head with a single prong may be used instead of a double prong, as shown.
In Fig. 8, I have shown the edges of the bolts EE tapered and the keeper having a square head.
It will be seen by the above construction that I make a very simple and effective lock which can be used with any type of tumbler arrangement and which will effectively hold the sliding cover of a box or other container, as shown in Fig. 9, and which cannotbe readily tampered with when the cover is closed.
I claim:
1. The combination in a lock, of a plate having an opening therein, a casing, a pivoted bolt, a spring tending to retain the bolt back of the opening in the plate; a hub, a cam on the hub, a projection on the bolt engaged by the cam, a lug on the cam to limit its turning movement, and a keeper shaped to be engaged by the bolt.
2. The combination in a lock of a plate having an opening therein, a casing, two bolts arranged opposite each other, springs tending to bring the bolts toward each other and back of the opening in the plate,
