=Applicationifiled July 6, 1908. Serial ilfm=l42,223.
To' al-l whom it mayconcern: "Be it known that I, ()m SCHAUMBERG, acitizen of the United States, and a resident 'of Pittsburgh, in the county -.of Allegheny having their axes horizontally disposed and both horizontally and vertically disposed c'ore sections, an inc-losing tank or casing being provided which is adapted to receive such transformers, and special end frames and holding-in devices being also provided for holding the transformer core sections firmly together and for firmly securing them to the casing after'the transformer is assembled and disposed therein, in order that the transformer may be handled without injury to the coils and without disarranging the elements of the core strueture.
Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings are elevations at right angles to each other of a transformer and an inclosing casing constructed in accordance with my invention, 'the casing bein shown in sec tion to disclose the parts 0 the transformer and the devices for securing it in position.
Referring to the drawings, the device here illustrated comprises an inclosing casing consisting of a tank 1 and a cover2, a transformer comprising a plurality of core sections 3, 4, 5 and 6, coils 7, a terminal block 8, and holding-in devices 9. The core sections form two members which are disposed in planes at right angles to each other and surround the sldes o the primary and second ary windings of the transformer. After the transformer core sections and coils are assembled, they are clamped together from to to bottom (the axes of the coils being so stantially horizontal) by a pair of end frames 10 and 11 and bolts 12 that form parts of the holding-in devices. When the core sections -and coils are-assembled. the
plane of' one ofthe core members is horizon tal while'the plane of'the other is vertical, the end frames beingclamped tothe outer surfaces of-the core members which lie in a vertical'plane. The-lower end frame-11 is provided with- .end"projections or ears 13 having holes- 14 to receive-the bolts 12", and foot projections 15 for supporti-ngthetransformer when itis outsideiof the inclosi-ng casing. The upper end frame- 10 is provided with-bifuroated projeeti-ons 16 having their-outer surfaces 17 beveled to engage corresponding sur- :faces 18 onaolamping blocks 19 whichiorm additional parts of the holding-in device.
The-upper frame 10 is also provided with ears or end projections 20, which correspond to the projections 13 of the lower end frame 11, and through which the upper ends of the clamping bolts 12 project. The parts of the bifurcated projections 16 which extend upwardly from the ends of the frame are materially separated so that clamping nuts 21 may be screwed upon the ends of the bolts 12 and against the ear projections 20 without engaging these parts. The end frames .may thus be clamped together independently ofthe holding-in devices.
The transformer is supported in the casing by shoulder projections'22 on its side walls, which are engaged by the horizontally disposed core sections 3 and 4, and the core and windings are firmly held in position within the casing by the blocks 19 which are fitted loosely over the upper ends of the clamping bolts 12 and are engaged by clamping nuts 23, which form parts of the holding-in device. The outer side surfaces 24 of the clamping blocks 19 are also beveled and are adapted to engage correspondingly beveled surfaces 25 on the walls of the casing, so that, when the nuts 23 are screwed down against the blocks 19, the transformer tends to center itself and a downward pressure is exerted against the shoulder projec tions 22.
Inasmuch as various structural modifica tions may be effected within the scope of my invention, I desire that only such limitations shall be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with an inclosing cas- .clanfping devices and means cooperating f with said devices and said inclined surfaces to clamp the transformer between the side walls of the casing and against the side projections.
2. The combination with an inclosing casing, an approximately cylindrical winding and a plurality of core sections surrounding the sides of the winding and disposed in substantially radial planes, the, axis of said winding lying in a horizontal plane, of end plates that engage opposite .outer surfaces of two of the core sections, vertical bolts for clam in the end plates together and adjusta le locks cooperating with the clampmg bolts for securing the core sections and the winding in position within the casing.
3. The combination with an inclosing casing, an approximately cylindrical winding so disposed that its axis 15 horizontal and a plurality of core sections surrounding the sides of the winding and disposed in pairs in radial planes, of end plates engaging opposite outer surfaces of one pair of core sections which lie in a vertical plane, bolts for clamping the end plates together and ad justable blocks having beveled side and bot tom surfaces that engage corresponding surfaces on the walls of the casing and on the upper surface of the top plate for securing the core sections of the winding in position said blocks being provided with holes through which the upper ends of the bolts extend.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 27th day of une,"
OTTO SCHAUMBERG.
