To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known 'that I, GIDEON ANDERSON, a

subject of the King of Sweden, residing in the lborough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair'- Combs, of which the following is a speciiicatin. I

My invention is designed to afford a practical, expeditious and effective hair-drying device for use after washing, shampooing,

bathing, &c., adapted especially to the requirements and convenience of persons having relatively long, thick hair .liable to tangle. t

I am aware that it has been proposed to use electrically heated metal combs for the purpose of drying hair, the heat-ing element being incased in the back of the comb and the teeth being heatedfby conduction therefrom, but, I have found tl is method of heating the comb unsatisfactory;

A distinguishing feature of niy invention consists'of tbetprovision of hollow comb teeth each containing an individual heating coil connected in circuit with conductors extending through the back and handle of the device and adapted to be in turn connected with a service'circuit through the medium of a suitable-plug and flexible connections substantilally as vhereinafter more fully set forth. By this means I attain a positive and effective heating of all the teeth, individually and collectively, throughout the series;

Incidentally my invention includes the use of a resistance coil,.va`ndY of a't'erminal holder and a service connection plug of peculiar construction, whereby the degree of heat imparted to the comb teeth may be varied; and also in the use of two orlmore rows of teeth staggered with relation to each other to insure close contact with the hair to be dried when the comb teeth are drawn through thesame.

Interposed in the main circuit c', cz'ar'e a seriesvof heating coils h, h, one forweach tooth a, a, said teeth being hollow and 'open-` ing into the recess in the back b, .as will be seen by reference to Fig. 1. The teeth are preferably made of .metal andv of approxi mately elliptical form in cross section; and '70 they each also preferably taper outward to a blunt point after the manner of ordinary comb teeth.

The main connection and circuit thus established will obviously impart the maximum 'degree of heat to the teeth a, a, to effect the evaporation of the greater portion of the excess of moisture in the hair. When the hair has been partially dried it is desirable that the heat'be reduced for the rprotection of the hair during t-he completion of the drying operation, and for this reason I provide the resistance coil @adapted to reducel t-he heat to the requisite degree of moderation. The resistance coil r, is connected directly by the Wire r, with the terminal r, and indirectly through the. main circuit c, c2, and Wire r2, with the terminal T22, both said terminals rl, r, being supported in the terminal holder t, in a common plane preferably at right angles to the plane common to the direct terminals c, c. Dummy terminal sockets p3, p3, correspondingly formed and situated in the servlce connection plug p, admit the latter to be inserted in the socket t',

with the contact tubes p2, p2, in engagement with either the terminals c,c?2, as before stated, or with `the resistance coil terminals 7', T22, a`s desired, `so that it is a simple matter to change from one prescribed degree of heat to the other.

When more than one row of teeth are provided, (and I prefer to employ two rows as shown in the drawings, although I do not limit myself in thisrespect) the teeth in the adjoining rows are staggered in position with relation to each other, so that as the comb is drawn through the hair the latter will be defiected by and between the teeth, from side to side laterally, thereby insuring thorough and intimate contact with the heat ed sur aces of the teeth and also eiiectually smoothing out and disentangling the hair,- a function which the teet-h are especially adapted to perform owing to their size and shape, and the fact that they alternate in position as above stated.

Itis to be understood that the heating coils h, and the auxiliary resistance coil r, and their connections are of ordinary and well known character, adapted to the requirements of the specific purpose herein setforth, the same being represented herein symbolically for convenience of illustration.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patent is,

1. In a hair drying comb of the character designated, the combination of a recessed back, a series of closed hollow teeth opening into said recessed back, an electric heating coil in each of said hollow teeth, a main electric circuit in the recessed back in which circuit the tooth heating coils are interposed, a terminal holder through which the terminals of said main circuit project, and a service connection plug formed with cont-act sockets for engagement with said terminals 'of the main circuit, for the purpose set forth.

2.- In a hair drying comb of the character designated, the combination of a series of hollow teeth, electric heating coils in said hollow teeth, a main--electric circuit in which said heating coils are interposed, a terminal holder through vwhich the terminals of Said main circuit project, an auxiliary circuit containing a resistance coil and having terminals projecting through said terminal holder, and a service connect-ion pl'ug formed with contact socket-s and with dummy sockets whereby either the main circuit' or the main and auxiliary circuits may be actuated electrically by means of said service connection plug, for the purpose described.

3. A hair drying comb of the character designated, comprising a recessed back, hol# low teeth opening into the recess in said back, a handle connected with said back and formed with anvend socket and an internal passage communicating with the recess in the' back, a terminal holder in said end socket, a main electric circuit in the recessed back having terminals projecting through said terminal` holder and into said end socket, an auxiliary resistance circuit in said recessed back connected with said' main cirieuit and having terminals projecting through said terminal holder and into said end recess, and heating coils situated in said hollow teeth and interposed in said main circuit, together with means for electrically actuating either the main circuit or the main and auxiliary circuits, for the purpose described.

5. A hair drying comb of the 4character designated', coin rising a recessed back, hollow teeth opening into the recess in said back, a handlelconnected with said back and formed with an end socket and an internal passage communicating with the recessin the back, a terminal holder in said end socket, a maiii electric circuit in the recessed back having terminals projecting through said terminal holder and into said end socket, an auxiliary resistance circuit in said recessed back connected with Asaid main circuit and having terminals through said terminal holder andinto said end recess, heating coils situatedin said hollow teeth and interposed in Said main circuit, and a service connection plug foi-ined with contact sockets and dummy sockets for engagement with the terminals in the handle eno socket, whereby either the inain circuit or the main circuit together with the auxiliary resistance circuit may be actuated electrically, for the purpose described.
