' DRINKING ABPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912.
Application filed October 25, 1911. Serial No. 656,619.
.and useful Improvements in Drinking Apparatus, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to sanitary drinking apparatus.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a simple and effective apparatus which may be connected with any ordinary faucet, and which is so arranged as to prevent the mouth or lip of the drinker contacting with'the outlet of the faucet, and whereby all of the contents of the apparatus will be drained therefrom when the said apparatus is not in use.
I also aim to provide in connection with a flexible hose sustained upon a faucet, a
metallic member having its extremity pro-' vided with shields or guards, the said metallic member being further provided with a depression or slot which is adapted to receive and to secure thereto a removable tube,
the said tube being normally in possession of the user so that water may be drunk from the tube without contacting with the metallic member.
With the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in view, the invention residesin the novel construction, combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and fully described and claimed. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same partly shown in section and illustrating the manner in which water is drawn from the device. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the metallic nipple. Fig. 4 is a view of the removable tube.
Referring now to the drawings in detail the numeral-l designates an ordinary faucet, which is connected with some suitable source of water supply, the said supply being under pressure so that the water will freely flow through the faucet when the cock thereof is turned in one direction.
Secured to the outlet mouth of the faucet 1 is a flexible hose 2, the same being preferably constructed of rubber, and the mouth of the said flexible member 2 is provided with a metallic nipple 3. The nipple 3 is secured to the flexible hose 2, in such a mannor as to render the detachment thereof difficult, if not impossible. And the nipple 3 is provided with a depressed or cut away portion 4 adjacent its free end and arranged parallel with the said cut away portion 4, the nipple is formed with a substantially V- shaped depression 5. The walls provided by this depression are preferably inclined, so that a substantially V-shaped off-set member 6 connected with-a tube 7 may be tightly secured to the nipple 3 by simply rotating the said tube to bring its off-set 6 snugly into engagement with the wall provided by the depression 5. When the tube 7 is attached to the nipple the cock of the faucet is turned on so as to allow the water to pass through the flexible hose and through the nipple, and of course through the removable tube which is inserted Within the mouth of the drinker. When a suflicient supply has been delivered to the drinker the tube 7 is rotated to bring its off-set 6 from within the depression 5, and when the said off-setreaches the cut-away portion 4 the tube may be readily detached from the nipple. As soon as the drinker releases his hold upon the flexible hose, it will of course, fall vertically by gravity so that the remaining water within the tube and nipple will be drawn therefrom.
' In order to prevent persons not provided with a tube, similar to the tube 7, from placing their mouths around the nipple 3 and thus drawing water therefrom, I have provided the upper portion of the said nipple with a plurality of radial guard members 8. Each of the said guards is preferably constructed of a single piece of wire or the like and the upper portions of the said guards projecta suitable distance above the outlet mouth of the nipple. The guards are preferably substantially U-shaped in side elevation as clearly illustrated in the figures of the drawings.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the sanitary advantages of my device,.the simplicity of the construction, as well as the cheapness of the manufacture of the same, will it is thought commend themselves to all those having an interest in the health of the public. It is also thought that further description of the structure is unnecessary except perhaps, to add that the invention is not to be restricted to the precise details of construction iiiustrated in the drawings and described in the s ecification, as minor changes which fall within the scope of the ap ended claims maybe resorted to without eparting from the spirit or. sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described theinvention what I claim is 1 1. In combination with a water supply, and a faucet provided with a cock connected with the supply, of a flexible tube connected with the faucet, said tube having its free end provided with a nipple, said nipple having one of its sides cut away, the inner portion of the nipple directly opposite the lower wall provided by the cut away portion being formed with a depression and an independent tube provided with an oil'- set portion adapted to beinserted within the nipple and to be rotated so as to bring the said oil-set portion into engagement with the walls provided by the depression of the nipple.
2. In combination with a water supply under pressure having a faucetprovided with a cock connected therewith, of a flexible .hose connected with the faucet, said hose' having its end provided with a nipple, the said nipple havin one of its sides cut to provide a recessed portion, the inner face of the nipple adjacent the lower wall of the recessed portion being formed with a substantially V-shaped depression, the walls of the said depression being inclined toward each other to provide a substantially wedged-shaped opening, the nipple being formed with outwardly extending radial guards, each of the said guards extending above the mouth of the nipple, and a -removable tube' having a substantially V- shaped oil-set portion, said tube adapted to be inserted within the nipple and to have its off-set portion engage the walls provided by the recess thereof. a
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. CARL J. ROLLEFSON. Witnesses:
