RAILWAY OR OTHER FARE INDICATOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR OEHRING, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Berlin, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway or other Fare Indicators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in a railway or other fare indicator in which the tables of stations and fares are arranged on an endless band moved to and fro over a number of rollers in a casing, the side of the band that is covered with the tables being moved past and exposed through an opening in the casing.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the same, Fig. 2 showing the means for actuating the endless band and the arrangement of a roller the weight of which puts the band under tension. Figs. 3 and 4 show the arrangement of guide rods for the band.
In a box like casing a rollers 12 are arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 1. The endless band a is first carried over the four corner rollers and those arranged somewhat lower than the upper rollers, and runs thence over a roller arranged between the two lower rollers. By the arrangement of a larger or smaller number of rollers in the manner shown the endless band can be wound in the casing in a larger or smaller number of turns.
The middle one of the lower rollers is seated in slots 0 (Fig. 2) so that its weight bears on the band and thus holds it stretched. More than one roller may be employed for this purpose if desired. The two roller pins f which run in the slots 6 are guided in the middle of the slots 6 which are formed somewhat wider than those pins by side springs g. It will thus be seen that by extending the width of the slots 6 in the walls of the casing, and by guiding the pins of the band between two side springs in the middle of these slots I hold the roller thus seated in a fixed position normally and yet the roller will be free to vibrate owing to excessive speed or other causes, the vibration being limited between the confining walls for said slot and cont-rolled by the tension of said springs.

For actuating the band a crank it is employed which transmits the rotary motion by means of a chain wheel 2' and a chain to a chain Wheel in fixed on one of the rollers. By means of a second chain Z the motion can be transmitted to a second roller fur nished with a chain wheel. Having thus provided for vertical tension of the band when. in posit-ion upon the rollers, I now provide means for stretching said band laterally, 'the means being adapted simultaneously to present any endwise wabbling movement thereof adjacent the opposite wall of the casing. For this purpose I employ transverse rods 7% which rods I firmly sew into the band at a suitable distance from one another so that the rods serve to keep the band additionally taut. This is more clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. In Fig. s it will be seen that the transverse rods protrude at each end and abut against the opposite walls of the casing a. No guide-ways are formed or provided in the opposite walls of the casing to receive the ends of said transverse rods since this would interfere with the limited vibratory movement of the tension roller aforementioned. In this way the roller adapted to longitudinally stretch the band is susceptible of a retarded vibratory movement in one direction only, whereby the band working thereon will be prevented from wabbling by the protruding portions of said transverse rods. The provision of the two fold feature of the transverse rods adapted to operate and coactin conjunction with the spring-seated roller renders my device very simple of construction and reduces the cost of manufacture.
On the side of the band that is movedpast the exposure opening in the casing the sheets bearing the names of the stations and the fares etc., are fixed. By turning the crank it any desired part of the band can be brought behind the said opening.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
