By referring to Fig. 7 it will be seen that the base block 3 has mounted upon it an electrotype, generally denoted by 8, said electrotype or printing plate being composed of the usual wooden base piece 9 and the electrotype or printing plate 10 fixed thereto. Iy present invention relates to.an improvement in electrotypes, and moreespeto the registration thereof in a press where a plurallty of the said electros types or halftone plates are used in multicolored printing One of the advantages of my device is the precision in which a series or group of'plates or blocks maybe registered.
Another advantage is the means whereby the plates or electrotypes are caused to take their proper position as relates to the top or bottom ofthe picture or' other design to be printed therefrom.
Another advantage is the means'by which these plates may be prepared for mounting by which the successive designs of a group are caused to absolutely register one upon registered. 7 Where a plurality of the electrotypes 8 are required for the purpose, as previously mentioned, of printing in two or three colarranged as above described so that any one of the electrotypes may be quickly removed from the base block 3 and another succeeding electrotype mounted thereon, and without further preparation it will register its portion of the design accurately upon the one previously printed. For .this purpose the electrotype base 9 is drilled for the reception of the dowels, the said drilling being done from a pre-determined point arranged on each of the said electrotypes, so that the said plates may be substituted for one anothn without the removal of the base block 3 fronrthe chase. For accomplishing this, for instance in the case of an electrotype, Fig. 3, wherein is shown the letter W centrally arranged on its base and having arranged at its central lines 4% and XY and near the outer edges thereof, a plurality of circular forms 15, 16, 17, and 18 are provided. These forms, whichhave previously been laid out upon the sketch or drawing from which the zinc etching and the electrotype were made, are therefore centrally positioned' as regards the design portion of tho electrotype 17", which, in this case, is the letter -W. The other companion plates of this group, not shown, also have circular forms similar to forms 15, 16, 1'7, and 18 located thereon in absolutely the same relation to their designs, and it is these said circular forms that are used for the purpose of preparing these blocks for their successiv:

A further advantage is that due to the construction of t e separate mounting, the electrotypes are easily removed and replaced without taking the mounting from the chase or the chase from the press, and without the taking apart of the holding device.

By referring to Fig. 4, which is an enlarged view taken on line 4-4, Fig. 3., it will be noted that the circular forms 17 and 18 have round depressions 19 and 20- formed. therein, which depressions are formed by the natural action of making the original plates in the usual manner. Their use is as follows: The position of the circular forms having been determined on the designs for a series of plates and the plates havingbeen they are placed a jig, Fig. 5, which is comprised of a base member 21 and a removable cover member 22. The base member 21 has fixedly mounted therein a plurality of dowels 23, 24, 25, and 26, and these dowels are slidably fitted in holes suitably located in the cover 22 and .are used to locate the said cover in accurate position as regards the base portion 21. In said baseportion 'are located a plurality of pins 27, 28, 29, 30, Fig. These pins are fixedly located in the same position as the said predetermined positions for the circular forms 15, 16, 17, and 18, on the electrotype. ,The ends of these pins are rounded and adapted to, fit in the circular depressions in the said circular forms, thereby accurately locating the plates for drilling the registry holes 'in the mountings. The cover portion 22 has located therein a series of bushings 31, 32, 33, and 34, said bushings being fixed and located to the central lines A-B and C-D, so that when the electrotype 8 is placed face downward on the base member 21, it is located in the jig by means of the depression in the circular forms and the pins 27, 28, 29, and 30. The cover plate 22 is then placed upon the locating dowels in said base plate 21 and the holes are drilled downwardly into the block portion 9 of the electrotype, and the resulting holes are thereby located in said block 9 so as to cause the electrotype, or a series so drilled, when fitted to the dowels 11, 12, 13, and 14, of the base block 3, Fig. 1, to successively and accurately register the said electrotypes in position in the chase for printing.
It is necessary when an electrotype is placed upon the base block 3, that some means he provided for the purpose of clamping and holding the electrotype 8 rigidly when so mounted. l n the accompanying drawings have shown the base block 3 as being provided on opposite sides with a pair of clamping nieinliiers 37 and 36. The said members 3. and 36 are pivoted in a pair of slots 37 and 38 which are out in the opposite ends of the said base block 23, and have a pair ot upturned edges which are adapted i to engage into a pair of oppositely disposed slotsfiQ and 40 which are arranged in the ends of the electrotype 8.
As a further provision in the registration 1 of a series of electrotypes, each one of which has a component part of the design thereon, one for each color, and for the purpose of preventing the improper positioning of any one of the said electros 1n the series, such as,.
for instance, getting them on the base block 3 upside down, I have arranged that; the dowels .11, 12, 13,'and 14 on the said base block are not in symmetrical position in relation to one another, but are ofl'set from one another, or other convenient method by which the electrot-ypemay be made irreversible in its mounting, thereby reventing the same'from being turned end for end. It is obvious that with this arrangement of holes in the jmountmg of the electrotypes must bear the same relative positions.

claim:

having a plurality of holes irregularly armounting having a plurality of dowels adapted to fit in said holes, whereby said electro or halftone block'may be limited to one relative position on said mounting,
the said dowels in the base block that the an electrot-ype or halftone block, said block ranged thereon, a mounting thereforfi said thereby preventing the improper setting of p the plate.
2. In a registering means for printing plates of the class described, comprised of an elect-retype or halftone block,'said block having a plurality of holes unsymmetrically 4 arranged thereon, a mounting therefor, said mounting having, a .plurality of dowels adapted to fit in said holes, whereby said electroor halftone block may be limited to one relative position on said mounting, thereby preventing'the improper setting of the plate, clamping means carried by said mounting and means on said electrotype or hal'ttone mounting adapted to be engaged by said clamping means. 3. In a registerable printing plate of the class described, compr sed of a detachable electro or halftone block and a base-block therefor adapted to be held in the chase of a printing press, and holes in said elect-roor halftone block, said holes being adapted to fit said dowels, and locating points carried on the printing face of said ele -tro or halftone block for the purpose of locating the same to permit of the drilling of said registering holes.
