SIGNAL-HORN.
To 'oll whom it may concern: Be it known that I, IRA E. STUMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signal-Plorns, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to improvements in signal horns, and is particularly designed and. adapted for use as an exhaust blown signal horn for use in connection with automobiles, motor trucks,niotor boats, and the like. When used as an exhaust blown signal horn in connection with automobiles, the same is preferably connected to the exhaust pipe between the engine and the mu'l'ller, and when so used the improved horn is adapted to provide a combined signal horn and cutout valve, the rotary valve being adapted to be moved from its normal' or nondivcrting position to either a fluid diverting cut-out posi'ion or a fluid diverting whistle or horn sounding position as desired.
\Viththe above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a top plan view of the improved signal horn, the parts being shown in their normal or nondiverting positions. with a fluid discharge opening 3, normally closed by means of a rotarywalve 1, when the latter is in its nondiverting position. A supplemental conduit or horn body 5, is adapted to be thrown into and out of communication withthe main pipe body 1, through the medium of the rotary valve 4:, said horn body or pipe being provided with a whistle slot 6, or second fluid discharge opening immediately above the fluid discharge opening 3, said horn body 5, being provided with attaching flanges 45*, secured to theflanges 1, of the pipe body by the rivets 2, which secure the latter together.
As a means for operating the rotary valve 4, whereby the latter may be moved to its fluid diverting cut-out position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. t, onto its fluid diverting whistle sounding position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, as well as roviding means for modifying the pitch of the horn when in the latter position, a rotary hood 7, is mounted upon and secured to the ends of the bearing pin or shaft 8, extending through the sides of the supplemental conduit or horn body 5, whereby the rotary valve 0 and hood 7, are simultaneously rotated or operated, as hereinafter described, and whereby the valve 4, and hood 7, are adapted to simultaneously open and close the fluid discharge opening 3, anc l whist le tions 7 of the sides of the hood will extend and project above the sides of the whistle slot forming tone modifying elements adapted to cooperate with the whistle slot in con trolling the pitch and tone of the horn when.

As a means for moving the rotary valve 4, to its various diverting positions whereby communication is established between the pipe bodies 1, and 5, and to itsnormal or nondiverting position whereby cornmunication between said pipe bodies is cut off a chain or cable 1 0,-is attached to a cross bar or member 11, of the rotary hood 7, said chain or cable being connected to a foot le-- ver or other suitable operating device adapted to move the rotary hood and valve against the resistance of a coiled spring 12, the latter being adapted to return and hold the parts to their normal position when the tion, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4,-
it will be observed that the operating uid will be permitted to be diverted from the inlet portion of the pipe body 1, upwardly and over .the rotary valve 4, passing out 7 through the whistle slot 6; and through the supplemental conduit or horn body 5, thus providing a cut-out or relief valve for use as occasion demands.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation andadvantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described an embodiment of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a signal horn the combinationwith a pipe body provided with a fluid discharge 25 with respect to said whistle slot, and horn body. h

A si nal horn, comprising a mam conduit provided with a fluid discharge opening, a horn body communicating withsaidf fluid discharge'opening' and provided with a whistle slot, and a rotary valve and hood pivoted from a common point and ada. ted 40 to simultaneously open or close said 'uid discharge opening and whistle slot.
