Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUNE G. S'ronN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cresbard, in the county of Faulk and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleighs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings.
This invention relates to improvements in sleighs and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
One object of my invention is to efi'ect improvements in the construction of the run- Another object is to effect improvements in the construction of the bobs.
Another object is to provide improved means for pivotally mounting the bobs.
Another object is to efiect improvements in the construct-ion of the bed frame of the sleigh to adapt the same for use in connection with the body of an ordinary buggy or carriage at will.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of a sleigh constructed in accordance with my invent-ion; Fig. 2 is a plan of a portion thereof including one of the bobs; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail sectional views respectively on the planes indicated by the lines 79-6 and c-c of Fig. 2.
In accordance with my invention each runner 1 is formed from a single piece of steel or iron a portion of which is bent rearwardly to form an integral rave 2. On the runner is an inverted U-shaped standard 3' the lower ends of which are out-turned and bear on the runner, the intermediate upper portion 4 of the standard bearing against the underside of the rave. On the inner side of each runner is a horizontally disposed substantially V-shaped truss-bar 5 the ends of which are secured to the underside of the rave at points near the front and rear ends thereof as at 6, 7. A hearing block 9 is dis posed transversely with respect to the runner and rave and bears at its outer end on the latter, the said bearing block being provided on its underside with an outwardly extending web 10 which is longitudinal with respect to the said bearing block and a depending web 11 which is transverse with respect to the bearing block, is located at the inner end thereof and bears against the intermediate portion 12 of the truss-bar 5, which intermediate portion is parallel with the rave.
A pair of brace-bars 13 are used in connection with each runner. The outer' ends of the said bracebars are secured to the in ner sides of the upright arms of the U- shaped standard 3. Said brace-bars are in" clined and their inner ends, which are upturned, bear against the inner side of the web 11 of the bearing block 9 and are secured thereto by a bolt 14 which also serves to secure the said web 11 of the bearing block to theintermediate portion 12 of the truss-bar. Each of the runners, with its truss-bar, bearing block and brace-bars, constitut'es' one of the bobs of the sleigh.
The bearing block is provided 011 its upper sideat its ends with, bearings 8 which are preferably formed integral therewith and in practice each bearing block with its webs 10 and 11 and its bearings 8, is preferably an integral casting but the same may be otherwise constructed and I do not desire to limit myself in this particular.
A shoe 15 is secured on the underside of each runner and certain of the bolts 16' which secure the shoe to the runner also serve to secure the runner to the out-turned portions of the uprights of thestandard 3.
y The bolts 17 which secure the intermediate portion of the standard to the rave also secure the outer ends of the bearing block 9 on the rave, as shown.
Thebed frame 18 of my improved sleigh comprises a front bolster 19, a rear bolster 20, side reach bars 21 which connect them together, brace bars 22 which connect the said reach bars to the rear bolster 20, a front axle 28, a rear axle 24; and a center reach bar 25. In practice the reach bars and the axles are preferably made of iron tubes such' as sections of gas or water pipes of suitable size. The side reach bars pass through openings in the bolsters and aresecured to the bolsters by bolts 26. The brace bars 22 are also secured to the rear bolster and to the side reach bars by bolts 27, 28. The side reach bars are longitudinally adjustable in the rear bolster and are provided with suitable adjusting openings for engagement by the bolts which connect them to the rear bolster and to the brace bars so that the rear bolster and hence the rear axle with its bobs may be adjusted to any desired distance from the front axle and bolster according to the desired length of the sleigh and the length of the buggy or other body which is to be mounted thereon. The cent-er reach bar is also adjustably connected at its rear end to the rear axle by the bolt 28 which serves to secure the rear bolster on the rear axle and the said center reach bar is provided with adjusting openings for engagement by the said bolts. The bolts which secure the rear ends of the brace bars 22 to the rear bolster also pass through the rear axle and secure the latter to the bolster.
A fifth wheel 29 is mounted on the cen ter of the front axle and is held in place thereon by the king-bolt 30 which also serves to secure the front end of the center reach bar to the front axle and to pivotally mount the latter and also secure the front bolster.
The ends of the axles engage the bearings 8 of the bearing block 9 and are held in place thereon by means of suitable keys 31. Thereby the bobs are independently pivotally mounted on the axles for angular movement in a vertical plane so that the bobs can independently of one another conform to any qualities in the surface over which the sleigh is passing. The front ends of the runners of the rear bobs are here shown as connected to the side reach bars by slack chains 32. The raves of the front bobs are provided with clips 33 to enable a cross bar 34: to be secured on the said front bobs by means of bolts 35, the said cross bar serving for an attachment of the pole or thills.
The box or body of a buggy or other vehicle, together with its springs is placed on the bed frame of my improved sleigh for use in connection therewith, the centers of the springs bearing in recesses 36 in the upper sides of the bolsters at the centers thereof,
and being secured in place on the bolsters by means of suitable clip bolts.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed is:
In a sleigh, a bob comprising a runner having a rave, an inverted U-shaped standard bearing on and secured to the runner and having its central, upper portion bearing under the rave, a block arranged with its outer end on the rave, above the standard, the block extending inwardly from the rave, being provided at its ends with upwardly extending bearings and being provided at its inner end with a downturned transverse web and being also provided, on its under side, with a longitudinally extending medially disposed rib, united to the said transverse web, a horizontally disposedtruss bar on the inner side of the rave, having its ends bearing under and secured to the rave, the intermediate portion of the truss bar bearing against the outer side of the web at the inner end of the block, inclined truss bars having their lower ends secured to the legs of the standard and their upper ends bearing against the inner side of thetransverse web of the block, bolts extending through and securing both the inclined and the horizontally disposed truss bars to the transverse web of the block, and bolts extending through the upper portion of the standard and also through the rave and the bearing block and securing said standard, rave and bearing block together.
