SANITARY DRINKING-FOUNTAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912.
Application filed February 6, 1911. Serial No. 606,962.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr H. BRADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Drinking-Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sanitary drinking fountains, and is designed more particularly for use in school buildings and other public places.
This invention embodies the combination of a tube or pipe provided with a series of sanitary mouth-pieces, a source of water under pressure connected with such tube or pipe through the intermediacy of normally closed valves, and means whereby said valves may be opened by pressure upon a rod or the like extending parallel with the mouth-piece pipe.
The invention herein claimed has for its subject the construction and arrangement of the valve-opening device.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a double fountain provided with said improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the resilient supports of the device. Fig. 41 is a detail view of one of the valve-opening levers, broken away, and a part engaged thereby.
The drawing shows my improved fountain as adapted for the use of children of diflerent ages, and comprises two supplypipes, 1 and 2, connected at their ends by transverse pipes 3, to which are connected vertical pipes 4c, 5. The latter are connected by a horizontal pipe 6.
7 designates a pipe which is to be connected with a source of water under pressure, and may be connected to any convenient point of the fountain pipe system.
The supply- pipes 1, 2 are provided with mouth-pieces 8, which discharge the water upward in small jets.
9 is a splash-board positioned centrally between the rows of mouth-pieces, to prevent the children from splashing water across the fountain in play.
The supply- pipes 1, 2 are supported by a pair of troughs 10, which are supported by metal stands 12.
Each transverse pipe 3 is provided with a self-closing valve 18. Each of these valves has a downward projecting stem, terminating in a grooved head 14:. When the stem is depressed the valve is closed. Mounted on each end of each trough is a plate 15, holding a fulcrum stud 16. Mounted on each fulcrum stud 16 is a lever 17, having on one end thereof a roller 18 which contacts the grooved head 14 of the adjacent valve.
Mounted on the sides of the troughs are brackets 19, having vertical or arcuate slots 20 therein. Through said slots extend two horizontal rods 21, one for each supply-pipe. These rods are supported by helical springs 22, located in the slots 20 and resting upon saddles 23. Saddles 2 1 are also interposed between the tops of the springs and the rod, to give the springs a proper bearing thereon; the springs being normally somewhat compressed. The levers 17 are secured to the rods 21 in any suitable way, as by having reduced ends entering openings in the r0 s.
Along one of the supply-pipes I provide a step or platform 25, for the use of the smaller children, so that they can reach the mouth-pieces.
Then a child wishes to drink, it depresses the rod 21, as permitted by the springs 22, and that movement rocks the levers 17 and opens the inlet valves 13, permitting water to rise from each mouth-piece. When the pressure is removed the springs 22 raise the rod, and the valves 13 automatically close.
Intermediate spring-brackets, as 19 may be provided where the length of the fountain exceeds a few feet.
The troughs 10 receive the overflow and are provided with drain pipes 26 which are connected to a common drain pipe 27.
While I have shown and described the preferred construction of my sanitary drinking fountain, I of course do not limit myself to the exact combination and arrangement of parts shown, but reserve the right to make such changes that fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut is:
1 In a fountain of the character described, a mouth-piece-p'ipe, self-closing valves adapted to admit water to said pipe, levers arranged to open said valves, a rod engaging said levers and extending along the mouth-piece pipe, and yielding means for holding said rod in valve-closing posit-ion.
2. In a fountain of the character described, a trough, a mouth-piece pipe supported thereon, levers fulcrumed on the trough, self-closing valves connected with the mouth-piece pipe and adapted to be opened by said levers, brackets fixed on the 10 trough, a rod passing through said brackets and attached to said levers, and springs mounted in the brackets for restoring the rod and levers to normal position.
