' sion Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in power transmission devices and is especially designed for use inconnection with barbers cutting shears and similar implements.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an apppliance of this character in which barbers clippers or shears may be actuated and thereby overcoming the necessity of operating the latter by hand as is customary.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an appliance of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive in the manufacture.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention, which to enable those skilled in the art to practise the same, will be set forth at length in the following description while the novelty of the invention will be pointed out in the claims hereunto append ed. However, it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be made, such as come properly within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of an electrically operated fan with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the same being partly in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a fragmentary side elevation on an enlarged scale of one of the pulleys with the flexible shaft detached therefrom. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modification of the invention. Fig. 6 is a side elevation thereof, partly in section.

Referring to the drawings by numerals 10 designates a suitable fan bracket or Specification of Letters Patent.

hanger having provided at its lower end a motor casing 11, in which is disposed the usually electrically operated motor for retating fan blades 12, the latter being of the ordinary well known construction.
Below the path of movement of the fan blades 12, is a hollow casing 13, the latter suspended from the fan bracket 10, by means of a connecting rod 14, which latter is passed centrally through the casing 13, and upon this shaft 14, is'loosely mounted a rotatable driving friction wheel 15, the same being connected to the arms of the fan blade 12, by branch pieces 16, so that upon rotation of the fan blades, the friction wheel 15, will also be rotated.
Rising Vertically within the casing 13, are guide bearings 17, in which are sup- :ported laterally shiftable arms 18, the inner ends of which loosely support frictionrollers or pulleys 19, the hubs 20, of which are engaged by said arms and, upon inward movement of the latter the friction rollers 19, are brought into contact with the driving rollers 15, for operating shears or clippers as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Detachably connected in the hubs 20, of the friction rollers 19, by means of set screws 21, are the inner ends of flexible coiled shafts 22, each of which is confined within a tube 23, suitably connected to the casing 13, and these tubes may have connected thereto shears or clippers or other devices such as dentists drills or tools. I have shown a shear or clipper attached to each flexible shaft for illustrative purposes. Each shear or clipper comprises a plate 24, is provided with handles 25 and 37 and the outer edge of this plate is provided with cutter teeth 25, to cooperate with cutting teeth of a suitable reciprocating cutter blade superimposed upon the plate 24:.
Projecting exteriorly from the casing 13, are brackets 39, to which latter are pivotally connected throw levers 40, the same carrying spring controlled locking 'dogs 41, engaging toothed racks 42, projecting outwardly from the casing, and these throw levers 40, are pivotally connected to the arms 18, and they serve to bring the friction rollers 19, into and out of contact with the friction driving roller 15, for starting and stopping the operation of the shears or clippers.
In Figs; 7 and 8 there is shown a modification of the barber appliance wherein a friction driving ulley 43, is connected directly with an e ectrically operated motor located within a casing 44:, and this friction wheel 43, is adapted to be engaged with and disengaged by the friction wheels or rollers 19, the same being operated for engagement and disengagement with the driving wheel 43 by means of the shiftable arms 18, connected to the throw levers 40, which latter are pivoted to the brackets 39, and carry the locking pawls 41, which are adapted to engage the toothed rack 42, for holding the levers 4:0, in adjusted position. The friction rollers 19 are detachably connected to the coiled flexible shaft-s 22, at the inner ends thereof.
From the foregoing the construction and operation of the invention will be obvious, without the necessity or requirement of a more extended explanation, and therefore the same has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. In a power transmission mechanism, a casing, a power device, rotatable drive means carried by the power device and extending through the casing, a friction wheel mounted rigidly on the lower end of the rotatable drive means within the casing, a
flexible shaft connected with the casing for 3 rotation, a friction wheel carried by the upper end of the flexible shaft and movable laterally toward and away from the first named friction wheel and means for shifting the flexible shaft and friction wheel and holding the same in an adjusted position.
2. In a power transmission mechanism, a casing, a power device rotatable above the casing, depending drive means rotatable with the power device and extending into the casing centrally thereof, a friction wheel carried by said rotatable drive means, a flexible shaft extending through the casing and adapted for sliding movement therein, a slidable bearing supported within the easing, a friction wheel removably connected to the shaft and rotatably supported by the bearing and a throw lever pivotally supported by the casing and connected to the bearing for shifting the last named friction wheel into and out of engagement with the first nalned friction wheel.
