Be it known that I, Tnonas Suonann, citizen of the United States, residing at Two Rivers, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Letter-Boards, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to letter boards, which are devices for receiving type matter before or after its location within chases, the letter boards being so constructed as to permit the type matter readily to be transferred thereto from galleys. The letter boards are individually supported by cleats or runs in a cabinet so t at thev may be readily drawn in and out, somewhat in the manner of drawers. To the end that the boards may be approached as closely as practicable, allowing sufiicient clearance for the type and permitting of access to the various boards so that they may be individually withdrawn from their containing cabinet, side rails are provided for the boards whose top and bottom faces lie in planes between which the board proper is disposed. In order to prevent the type matter from being pushed over the back edge of the board a back rail is provided for the board. In order to afiord a resting place for the galleys the board is provided with a lip at the front, this lip being sutlic-iently depressed so that the type support ing level of the galley and the type supporting level of the letter board may be substantially coincident to enable the type readily to be pushed from the galley to the letter board. In order to enable the letter board 110 be withdrawn from its normal position in the cabinet containing the same, the alley supporting lip is provided with a formation beneath the same which may readily be enga ed by the fingers. Hitherto the board, tlie rails and the combined galley sup orting lip and finger holding formation ave been made in separate parts and afterward assembled into the complete structure.

It is the object of my invention to reduce the number of parts entering into the complete letter board structure and while I prefer to make the entire structure out of an integral piece of suitable material, I do not wish to be limited to this precise embodiment of my invention.

In practicin my invention I employ sheet material for making the letter board structure, this material being desirably in the form of sheet metal such as steel which is suitably operated upon by pro er die mechanism to form the letter boar structure in accordance with my invention.

I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which---- 7 Fi ure 1 is a plan view showing a letter board as constructed in accordance with the preferred embodimentof the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, Figs. :2 and 3 being on an enlarged scale as compared with Fig. 1.

Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.

The letter board proper 1 is desirably made of a sheet of steel whose side margins are first upwardly deflected at- 2, then laterally and outwardly deflected at 3, thereafter downwardly deflected at 4, inwardly deflected at 5, upwardly deflected at 6, and inwardly deflected at 7, the portions 7 un derlying the main letter board element 1 and contacting therewith, the main portion 1 of the letter board being desirably electrically welded or otherwise secured in fixed relation with the portions 7. The ortions 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 upon each side of t e main part- 1 of the letter board structure constitute side rails which may rest upon the runs provided in a letter board receiving cabinet, the lower portions of these side rails serving to maintain proper clearance between the letter bcards which are usually arranged in vertical tiers. The rear margin of the sheet out of which the structure is made is upwardly turned to provide an upwardly extending back rail S to prevent the type matter from being pushed oil the board after it has been placed thereupon. The forward portion of the structure is slightly downwardly deflected at 9 and forwardly continued to constitute a lip 10 on which to rest the galleys- This lip 10 is provided with a downward continuation l1, and the continuation 11 is desirably rearwardly continued at 12 to afford a finger hold to enable the letter board readily to be caught by the hand when it is desired to withdraw it. from its containing cabinet.

While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 1.
