Description

To all 'whom it may concern.'

JAMES R. EANoRoET AND ROBERT o. EAoHE, or PHILADELPHIA, PENN- SYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 103,410, dated May 24, 1870.
IMPROVED CARPET-STRETCHER AND TACKER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that we, JAMES R. BANoRor'r and ROBERT C. BACHE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Carpet-Stretcher and Tacker; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the artto make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of our improved carpet-stretcher and tacker.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new instrument for stretching carpets, matting&c., and for applying the istening-tacks to the same.
The invent-ion consists in lthe use oi' a stretchingframe, with a vertical tack-holder and hammer', all arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A, in the drawing, represents the carpet-stretcher.
It is made in form of a yoke, which projects from .a horseshoe plate,ra, in front, and from an arched plate, I1, in the rear.
The lower faces of the plates a, b are toothed, as shown.
In an ear, c, that projects from the front end of the stretcher, is arranged a vertically-sliding bar, B, which has a knob, e, at the upper end, and which is held up by a spring, d.
In the lower end ot`-the har B is a'dove'tailed tapering groove, f.
Tile tack to Vbe applied is, with '.s head, fit-ted into the groove of the bar B.
The carpet is properly stretched by applying the toothed plates a b and pushing the frame A forward. Then the bar B is driven down, to .force the tack through the carpet into the ioor. The tack will-then be applied directly between the horseshoe. It will, however, be retained with its'head in the dovetailed groove until the whole instrument is drawn back.
The groove f is wider in front, and is tapering, so that it may be fitted for all sizes of tacks.
H1 ving thus described our invention,
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentv l The combined carpet-stretcher and tacker, consist- .ing of a yoke, A, provided with notched plates a b,
sliding har B, and spring d, relatively arranged, substantially as shown and described.
