The rear portions of the numeral-levers have pin-andslot connection with the link e in the same manner as do all of the remaining levers. A coupling is provided between the front part and the rear part of each numeral-lever, whereby operation of a numeral key may be caused to effect operation of the entire lever and thereby the entire train of mechansm, effectively to strike the type 'oars against the platen. These couplings are of duplicate construction, each comprising a sliding block G having slots 7 which receive `pins 8 on the-front portions of the numerallevers. These blocks are dinovablenlongit-udinally, and in their rearward position rest over extensions 9 on the rear parts of the numeral-levers as shown in Fig. 1, thus constituting couplings whereby depression of the numeral keys will result in operation of they entire typewriting trains leading from said keys respectively. The complete train of typewriting mechanism in. addition to the key mechanism described, includes a series of' links 10 pivoted upon a rod or shaft 11 and having pin-and-slot connection 12 with the links 4. The upper ends of the links 10 have links 13 leading to the type bars 14 pivoted upon and supporting rod, 15, preferably in position to constitute a front `strike typewriter. Itwill be noted that the coupling blocks 6 may be moved forwardly beyond the ends 9 of the rear portions of t-he key levers in the typewriter numeral trains, in which position the numeral lkeys may be operated without affecting the remainder of t-he typewriter numeral trains.
The paper carriage 16 is movable laterally, preferably upon -ant-i-friction devices 17, the lateral movement of the paper carriage in operation of the t-ypewriting mechner through the medium of a pinion 18 meshing with a rack 19 on the carriage. Since the -method of stepping the carriage across the machine by operation of the typewriter mechanism constitutes no part of the present invent-ion, such mechanism has not been herein illustrated, it being understood that Aany suitable type of escapement and carriage y be utilized for these purposes, and it being further understood that the carriage may be actuated by any ype of motor, since such devices are old and very well known in the art and may be readily assembled in a machine of this character by anyone familiar with such devices.
In the advance position of the couplings 6, they are immediately over the upwardly' extended ends of adding mechanism numeral-levers 20,.pivoted side by side upon ashaft 21, and having their front ends diverging properly, as shown in Fig.2,-so as tov terminate alongside of the proper typewriter numeral keys. In the present instance, as in the Hopkins patent and application beforeI mentioned, there are ten numeral-levers 20, one for each of the ten numeral characters. Operation of these numeral-levers is necessary in order to introduce any number into the adding mechanism of the machine. In the Hopkins devices the front ends of the numeral-levers are surmounted by keysl arranged adjacent to the typewriter keys and there is no means for preventing operation of the typewriter numeral keys instead of the adding mechanism keys in the listing column. This is the occasion of confusion in many instances, and the operator will not be informed of his error in striking the typewriter numeral keys in the place of the adding mechanism keys until it is too late for correction. These objections are obviated by'the mechanism provided for entraining one set of numeral keys with either mechanism as desired, and preventing operation of both mechanisms simultaneously.
The tabulating key 22 is arranged, in the present instance, at the right of the machine with respect to the 'operator 'in alinement with the row of numeral keys, said Atabulating key comprising a stem supporting a finger piece and operating in a guide 23, and having its lower end resting upon an arm 2-1 which is rigid with a rock shaft 25 supported. below the key-levers 2. Said rock sha-ft extends transversely under the key-levers, and at its end opposite from the arm 24 carries a depending arm 26 to which a link 27 is pivoted, the rear end of said link being connected to the vertical arm of the bell crank lever v28, which is pivotally supported 'at 29. The other arm of said bell crank lever extends forwardly and is pivoted to the lowerend of a vertically movable rod 30, the upper end of which eX- tends through a socket 31 supported by the frame of the machine. A spring 32 encircles the rod 30 within the'socket 31, abutting at its upper end against the frame of the machine in which the rod' 30 has its bearing, and at the lower end against a collar or flange 33 on said rod 30. his spring is effective to actuate the rod 30 downwardly, returning the saine and the connected parts including the tabulating key to idle position after each operation. rlfhe upper end of the rod 30k is under a bar 34 which is carried by two arms 35 attached to the rock shaft 36 by which the rack 19 is supported. Depression of the tabulating key causes the upper end of the rod 30 to lift the har 34 and thereby rock the shaft 536 which carries the rack 19 out of mesh with fthe pinion 18, as shown in Fig. 10. The mechanism constructed along these lines enables the use of one set of numeral keysV for operating typeivriting mechanism or registering ,numbers in an adding mechanism as desired., he provisions of the tabulating mechanism, the operation of which is necessary in order to introduce numbers i'nto the adding mechanism,simplies -the ina' chine to a great ex tent and provides an etlective safeguard against error, since the locking mechanism controlled by this key Will l positively disable the typewriting mecha nism Whenever'A numbers are being' introduced .into the adding department of the machine; also the 'adding' department is enagainst error.
