y ros'r.
.citizen ot the Unitedl States, residing at Farmland, in the county of Randolplrand State of Indiana, have invented-certain new .I Specication-oflletter's Patent. Appucationaldnay 27, 1912. serial No. 700,061.
and ,useful Improvements inl Posts, of-Which the following is a speeication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fence posts and more particularly to concrete posts, the object of the invention being toprovide a novel postl of the above character whereby the use of braces'above the ground is entirely eliminated..
Another objectof the invention is to provide. an improved fence post with novel means for anchoringthe same in the ground which will save time and labor in digging a pit 5 or 6 feetin the ground for anchoring the various kinds of posts which are in use at. the present time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a post of the above character Which will possess advantages in points 'of ettieiency and d1nal,ility,is inexpensive to manufacture and at the saine time is simple in construction and opera-tion.
lilith the above and other objects in View, the invention consistsin the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement ot parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed outin the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure l is a Vertical sectional view of my .improved post'A showing the core or Hller in elevation. Fig. i2 is a sectional View on the line 2 2 ot Fig. l.
e lteterrin;r more particularly to the drawings, l i'ndieates the base which is ot substantially cross shaped and comprises the n'ufmhers 2 and 'f5 which are interlocked at their intermediate portion as shown at 4 and 'arranged at right angles to each other.
r,the numeral 5 indieates the eore or filler for the post. ha ring its lower end arranged in the opening t which is formed in the. intermediate portions ol theeross members 2 and 3.
Before the post is set in the ground, the Saule is securely braced by means ot the wire 7, one end oi which en eireles the post above thecross pin Fl which is arranged transversely through the post at' the ground line.
Patented July 30, 1912.
The lWire is then passed through the eye 9 on one end of thevcross piece 2, then across and inthrough the eye 10 on one end of the cross piece 3, thence upwardly to a pointI adjacent the upper end of the post, where the Wire makes a half circle of the post and is 'held in `place by -nieans of the cross pin l2 which is arranged transversely through the post. The wire then extends downwardly and outthrough the eye 13 mounted upon the cross pins 3 opposite the eye 10, the wire then'extends inwardly and around the post as shown at 14- and the eye 15 mounted upon the end of the cross pins Q opposite the eye t), the'wire then extends upwardly and halt' way'around the upper end of the post as shown at 1G and is supported means ot the cross pin 17' arranged transversely througlrthe upper end of the post. After the wire partially encircles the postas shown at 16, it then extends downwardly and in -through'the eye 9, then extends around the post *and out through the eye 10, across and through t-he eye 15, thence across through the eye 13, and from the eye 13 extends across and through the eye t) and the t-reme end of the Wire is then twisted as shown at 18.
The brace Wires 19 are drawn closely inward toward the post, at. the ground line, by small pieces ot wire which are looped around the outer side oi the wires and the-n twisted tightly together as shown. at 2O so as to draw the brace wires closely to the post. lt will be understood that the post may be set. any distance in the ground and the pin S is arranged transversely through the post atl the ground'line. The preferred depth in setting the post in the ground is eighteen inches. ait'er the pitv has been dug. the base l is set' down in the' ground and concrete or cement; is poured in the pit tio fill the same up to the ground line. The brace wires 19 and the core 5 .is then ine'losed by the rement` or eoncrete'the salue' heilig formed of any suitablesizc and shape desired. The. core 5 may he formed ot wood, iron or any other suitable material desired.
lt will be understood that any suitable fastening means may be employed to secure the fence wires to the post, and it will also he understood that holes may be drilled transversely through the post., before the same has been completed, and running the fence wire through the post, if desired. It,
not only applicable for use as a ,fence post but the same may be used as a telephone,
`-`any ot the' novelfeatures or departing from] i5 cross pieces arranged at right angles to each telegraph, or anyother pole of this charac-v tier whichiequires a substantial base'which cannot be easily removed from the ground'.
`While l have shown and `described the preferred form of my invent-ion itbvill bel obvious that variouschanges' in the vdetails of construction-enclin the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying l my inventionwinto practice without sacrificing thescope thereof. y
TWha-t, x claim ia l. line `deviceot the character described,
the combination of a. base comprising cross pieces arranged at right angles to each other, 'eyes secured to the'cross pieces, a. post having'its lower end mountedin the intermediate portions of the cross pieces, apin extending transversely through the post adjacent fthe lower end thereof, pins extending transversely through the'upper end of the' post and arranged at right angles to each other, brece'members comprising a singleA length of wire having one ot'- its endsen-` circling the postadjacentthe first pin, the
other end of said wire passing through the.
eyes on the base member, extending upwardly and partially encircling the upper end ot the post above the cross pins.
" 2. The combination of a base comprising other' and interloclted at their intermediate portions, eyes secured to the cross pieces adjacent each end thereof, a post having its lower end mountedin the intermediate portions of the cross pieces, a 'pin extending transversely through the post adjacentthe lower end thereof, pins 'extending transversely through the post at the upper end thereof and arranged at right angles to each other, a brace wire having onev end encirclingthe post above the first pin, extending downwardly and through an eye on one of tlie cross pieces, thence across and through er A intente' above one Vof thelpins at the upper end thereof, tlience Adownwardly and through an eye `on the second cross piece, thence extendingaround the 0st and through an eye on the first cross piece, thence'upwardly and halt {way aroundthe post above the second pin fat the upper end of the post, thence downward-ly and through the first eye, then around the post and through the second eye, thence through they iourth, third, 'and` lirvst respectively, and the extreme end otv said wire being twstedvto 'Securely hold the saine agalsft movement.. v y
3. na device of the character described,
lthe Combination of a .base coi'nprisingr cross pieces arranged at right angles toeachother' and interloclredf at their intermediate porT vtlc-ns, eyes secured to the ,cross pieces ad]a cent each end thereof, a post having its lower Y end mounted in the intermediate portions ot the cross pieces, a pin extending transversely through the post adj acent the lower end thereof, pins ext/ending transversely through the post atthe upper end thereof and ar- 1 ranged at right angles to each other,va 'brace wire having onetof its ends`enc`1rcling the 'post above the first pin, said brace wire exy tending through the eyes upon the base member and twice upwardly andihalf way I around the'post above the second pins, and
then around the post at the lower end and through the eyes, jand its other end twisted upon itself to securely hold the same in place, auxiliary wires looped around the upwardly extending wires beneath the first pin co-drawA the upwardly extending wires. inwardly .toward'theipost, said base, brace wires and post being entirely cov/ered with'concrete or cement. l
ln testimony whereof' I hereunto atlix my Copies of this patent may ne obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
