In the operation of internal combustion engines, especially of the type commonly in use in automobiles` the ignition is accomplished by means 'ot electric sparks produced either troni a battery or a magneto. generator, and the object of my invent-ion is to produce a switch of such form that it may be readily and accurately operated by toot in such manner that either battery or magneto may be connected with or discon-v nected trom the distributing circuit and also of such character that, When in battery con necting position, slight additional pressure will bring into operation a vibrator .which will operate to produce a continuous stream of sparks Within that particular engine cylinder connected by the distributer with the The accompanying drawings illustrate invention.

In the drawings, 10 indicates a cup-like .base preferably formed of insulating material and conveniently triangular in shape. Rising from the bottom of base 10 are three pins 11, 12 and 13, each of vvhich is provided with a semi-spherical enlargement 14 at its base' The three pins 11, 12 and 13 are arranged at the middles of the sides 'of the base 10 and sleeved over said pins is a triangular metal sivitch trame 15, each side of which is perforated, as indicated 'at 1G, to receive one ot the pins. Each of the perforations 16 has a semi-spherical scat at its inner end to receive one ot the enlargements 14, the construction being such that the trame 15 may be readily rocked in any one of three directions upon anypair of pins. Carried at the apices ot' trame 15 are push buttons 17, 18 and 19 which project trom the trame 15 preferably through a suitable coverplate 21. rThe frame 15 is preferably open in its center in order to givel space for the Patented July 39, 11912.

In order that the device may be readily rendered inactive I mount the push button 19 removably and rotatably in the frame 15, and provide said button With a projecting key 41 which may be irst introduced into slot L12in trame 15 and then turned into slot 43- of said frame so as to drive a spring termmal 111i, attached to, and in electrical contact with, frame 15, into contact with a terminal 4:5 mounted in the cup 10. this con'tactI being maintained in all ,positions of trame 15, the apparatus Will'be set in front of the operator, either upon the floor or upon the dash board of the car in such position that the operator may engage any one of the push buttons 17, 18 or 19 and operate the same by a direct leg push. I prefer .to mount the apparatus substantiallyvertically on the dashboard with the button 19 uppermost. rThe operation is as follows; An inscrtion ot the button 19 into its proper place in iframe 15 to the position shown in 1, will serre to bring` into contact the terminals l-ll and 115, thus putting the trame 15 into the primary circuit. A pressure upon-the button 19 will cause the frame 15 to swing upon pins 11 and 13 as a tulcrum so as to drive finger 33 into the i.'etaininf l engagement ot the member 34 so as to hold traine 15 in its neutral position. In this position of trame 15 both thebattery and magneto circuits are broken. By exerting` a pressure upon button 1S, trame 15 will swing` upon pins 12 and 13 as a i'ulcrum so as to withdraw finger 33- from retainer 34e and drive finger 31 down into engagement with terminals 32 where it will be yieldingly 4retained so as to complete the battery circuit 51, 52, 32, 31, 15, M, 15, 69,721,135, G11, 67, 58, 57, 53. lf a starting' spark is desired the operator will. press hard enough upon button 18 to drive the spring terminal 37 into vContact with terminal 38, whereupon a 'circuity will be established trom battery 51 through 53, 23, 5st, 23, 25, 24, 55, 22, 56, 37, 38, 68,65, 71, 69, 45, fist, 15, 31, 32 and 52 so that by reason of the action oit the vibrator 22, a rapid succession of sparks will be automatically produced in whichever cylinder is in proper condition to receive a spark Ytrom the secondary'circuit 81. As soon as the engine is started, the additional pressure upon frame 15 will be withdrawn so as to permit terminal 37 to withdraw from terminal 38, and the movement of the engine will rotate the magneto 'and interrupter. Thereafter so long 'as the trame 15 remains in the position indicated, the sparking-circuit will be as previously described.
Whenever the magneto has reached a desired and proper generating speed, the operator will then press upon button 17 so as to swing frame 15 upon pins 11 and 12v thereby withdrawing ingg'cr 31 from terminal 32 and projecting fingers 26 and 27 into contact with terminals 28 and 29, respectively, whereupon the following circuits will be established: (1) Art the times when the points in the interrupter box are in engagement the circuit will be, 63, 62, 29, 27 15, 26,23,57,58,generator (2) At the times when the points in the interruptor box are not in engagement the circuit will be, 63, 62, 27, 15, 111,115,69, 71, 65, 64,57, generator, 6. A switch comprising two sets of independent circuit terminals. a. terminal. controlling member, a iiexible support for said controlling member permitting; tilting' movement of said controllingl member intov three different positions by application ot force in the same general direction but upon different portions of said member, and means carried by said controlling member and coperatingvwith the indel'iendent circuit terminals for independently .opening and closing'said independent circuits.
2. A switch comprising two sets ot inde pendent circuit terminals, a terminal controlling member, a iexible support tor said controlling` member permittingl tilting;
.movement of said controlling member about ditlierent axes into three different positions', and means carried by said controlling .member and eoperating withthe independent circuit terminals for independently ol'iening and closing` said independent circuits.

A switch comprising a controller member having a multiplicity ot supportingl axes each larranged at an angle'to the other and about any of which said controller member may be swung from any position, and independent circuit terminals arranged in position to be independently controlled by said controller member when swung upon its ditferent axes.
4. A switch comprising a substantially triangular controller member, a three-axis l support for said controller member, two circuit terminals arranged to be contacted by movement of the controller member upon one of its axes, a circuit terminal arranged to be contacted b y the controller member when swung upon another of its aXes, a pair of normally separated terminals arranged to be contacted by turther movement of the controller member when contacted-with said last mentioned terminal, and a circuit terminal normally in contact with the controller member in'all. of its positions.

A switch comprising` a substantially triangular controller member, a three-axis support for said controller member, two 'circuit terminals arranged to be eontacted'by movement ot the controller member upon one of its axes, a circuitterminal arranged to be contacted by the controller member whenl swung upon another of its axes, and a circuit terminal normally in contact with the controller member in all of its positions.
