To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, KIRK HILLIARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vinton, in the county of Benton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Harrows, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had therein to the accompanying drawing. a
This invention relates to harrows and has for its object the production of an efficient harrow beam whereby a number of harrow frames may be attached to the beam in such a manner as to allow the harrow frames and beam to be folded in a compact position.
Another object of this invention is the production of an eflicient hinge structure for engaging the harrow beam sections.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, arrangements and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
- In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a top plan view of the harrow. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the harrow bar showing the same in its folded condition. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a portion of the harrow bar showing the manner of engaging the hinge thereto. Fig. 4: is a detailed perspective of the socket plate. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the hinge plate.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 1 designates the primary portion of the harrow beam which carries at each end a socket plate 2. Each of these socket plates comprises a channel member straddling the beam as illustrated in Fig. 2. The socket plate 2 is provided with a plurality of upwardly extending ears 3 at one end and also carries near the center thereof upon its flanges an upwardly extending ear 4:. The
socket plate 2 is fixedly secured to the ends of the primary beam 1 through the medium of bolts or pins 5 which pass through the apertures 6 formed in the plate 2. This plate 2 only extends for approximately half its length upon the beam 1, the other half being left to receive the adjacent ends of the auxiliary sections 7 of the beam. A hinged plate 8 is carried by the inner ends of the auxiliary sections 7 of the beam and this hinge plate comprises a flat body portion having rolled ends 9. A pin 10 passes through the apertured ears 4 of the plate 2 and acts as a pintle for the hinge plate 8. l/Vhen the auxiliary section 7 is placed in an operative position, that is to say, hav- 1ng lts lnner end placed within the socket plate 2, a pin llis passed through the opposlte rolled portion 9 and through the pivot ears of the plate 2, thereby holding the auxillary section 7 in a horizontal position.
Of course, when it is so desired to fold the auxiliary sections upon the primary sec tion the pin 11 is withdrawn from the ears 3 and the auxiliary sections 7 may be folded to the position as illustrated in Fig. 2. Eyes 12 are carried by each of the auxillary and primary sections, and to these eyes are connected harrow frames 13 which may be of any desired construction. Draft links 14 are connected to the front of the harrow beam and have their inner ends connected to the primary and auxiliary sections of the beam so as to allow the beam to be readily folded without interfering with the operation of the draft links.
In view of the fact that the harrow beam may be folded in the manner as above described it will be obvious that the harrow may be adjusted in width by swinging the auxiliary end portions back upon the primary portion of the beam when the harrow is desired to be used in narrow places. It will be further-obvious that in View of the fact that the inner end of the auxiliary section is placed within the side walls of the channel member 2, the auxiliary portion will be held against lateral swinging relative to the primary section of the beam.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
What is claimed is 1. A folding harrow beam comprising a primary portion and a plurality of auxiliary portions, socket plates carried by said primary portion, a hinged plate carried by each of the auxiliary portions, means for hingedly securing said plates to said socket plates, and means engaging said hinge plate and socket plate for holding said auxiliary portions of said harrow beam in an operative position.

A harrow of the class described comprising a beam, said beam comprising a plurality of sections, socket plates carried by one of said sections, hinge plates carried by the other of said sections, means for hingedly securing said hinge plates to said socket plates, and locking means carried by said hinge plate and engaging said socket plates for holding said other sections in their sections, ears carried by said socket plates, 8. A foldable harrow beam comprising a primary section, and a plurality of auxiliary sections, socket plates carried by the ends of said primary section, hinge plates carried by the inner ends of said auxiliary sections, said hinge plates comprising a substantially U-shaped body and straddling said and means passing through said roll portion of said hinge plates for hingedly securing said sections together, and means for holding said auxiliary sections in said socket plate.
