EDMUND B. WEST, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS, AND NATT F. STEVENS, OF DURHAM, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
, SHOE.-
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDMUND B. WEST, residing in Lynn, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, and NA'IT F. STE- VENS, residing in Durham, county of Strafford, and State of New Hampshire, both citizens of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of shoes or slippers commonly called pumps, in which the shoe or slipper is held on the foot by a strap, one end of which is connected permanently to the upper just below the ankle on one side, while the other is detachably connected with the opposite side of the upper. Suchstraps are often broken or injured'and ordinarily it is necessary to send the pumps away to have the straps repaired or replaced by new ones.
The object of our invention is to provide detachable straps for pumps of novel construction, both ends of which are detachably connected with the upper so that a broken or injured strap may be easily detached and replaced by a new one.
In carrying out our invention we preferably attach to the inner face of one side of the upper just below the ankle a short strip of leather or other suitable material so arranged that it forms a loop through which a strap may be passed, and which strap has on its inner end an enlargement, which enlargement is of such size that it cannot pass through the loop. The opposite end of the strap is detachably connected with the upper in any usual way. Preferably the strip of leather forming the loop is reinforced as by the insertion of a short piece of sheet metal and the enlargement on the inner end of the strap is also preferably reinforced in the same manner, so that when a strain is put on the strap neither the loop nor the enlargement will give way.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one member of a pair of pumps with our improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a detail view with parts broken away of the loop strip. Fig. 3 shows Specification of Letters Patent.

an elevation of the strap with parts broken away.
The shoe proper may be of any suitable or usual construction. To the inner side of the upper just below the ankle and near the upper edge of the upper we attach a strip a of leather or other suitable material to form a loop A. This strip is preferably made of two thicknesses of leather, as indicated in Fig. 2, and is also preferably reinforced by a thin strip of metal 7). The opposite ends of the strip are inserted in slits formed in the lining and the ends of the strip are stitched to the lining in the manner indicated, leaving a slight fullness in the strip to form the loop A. i
The strap B may be of ordinary construction with the exception that at its inner end it is enlarged to form a base C which is considerably wider than the loop A. The strap is preferably made from two thicknesses of leather and the base portion C is preferably reinforced by a thin piece of sheet metal 0.
It will be readily understood upon an inspection, of Fig. 1 how the strap may be attached to or detached from the shoe. Additional straps may be furnished with each pair of shoes, or the straps may be easily obtained and applied to the shoes by the wearer.
l/Ve claim as our invention:
1. The combination with a low cut shoe provided on its inner side with a loop for the reception of an instep strap, of an instep strap enlarged at one end to prevent it from pulling through said loop.
2. The combination with a low cut shoe provided on its inner side with a reinforced loop for the reception of an instep strap, of a strap reinforced and enlarged at one end to prevent it from pulling through said loop.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto subscribed our names.
EDMUND B. WEST. NATT F. STEVENS.
