PEDAL FOR PIANOS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pedals for Pianos, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to form a connection between a pedal and its rocking rod.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a section on line a a Fig. 2, the pedals being shown in plan. Fig. 2 is a section on line b b Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 0 c Fig. 1.
To the base 1 of the piano case are secured three brackets 2, 3 and 4: having upturned perforated ears 5. Pedals 6, 7 and 8 are pivotally connected to the ears 5 of the brackets 2, 3 and 4 respectively. The pedals are each provided with a series of holes 9. A spring 10 is located beneath each of the pedals 6, 7 and S, the action being to hold the pedals elevated against the cushioned stops 11. On the base 1 of the piano case are pivotally mounted two rocking bars 12 and 13 by means of the cleats 14, such bars being disposed at an angle to the pivotal axis of said pedals. To the rocking bar 12 are rigidly secured two overhanging arms 15 and 16, and to the rocking bar 13 is rigidly secured an overhanging arm 17. These arms 15, 16 and 17 have their free ends located over the pedals 6, 7 and 8 respectively, and rods 18 are located in the holes 9 of the pedals with their headed end against the underface of the pedal. The upper ends of these rods are screw-threaded and receive thumb-nuts 19. These rods form a connection between the pedals and the 0verhanging arms, and the distance between the arms and pedals is variable by turning the thumb-nuts. To the rocking bar 12 is connected an arm 20, and to the rocking rod 13 Specification of Letters Patent.

is connected an arm 21. Rods 22 and 23 are supported by the arms 20 and 21 respectively. By depressing the pedal 8, the rod 23 will be elevated in the usual manner, and by depressing the pedals-6 and 7 the rod 22 will be elevated, but the pedal 6 will raise the rod 22 farther than the pedal 7 by reason of the rod 18 being located a greater distance from the hinge of the pedal 6 than the rod of the pedal 7, such difference in distance being due to the angular relation of the rod 12. By means of the thumb-nuts, the rods 22 and 23 can be adjusted.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a piano, the combination with a pedal, and means for pivotally supporting the same, of a rock shaft mounted adjacent thereto, an arm rigidly secured to said shaft and overhanging said pedal, and means adjustably connecting the free end of said. arm with said pedal.
2. In a piano, the combination with a pedal, and means for pivotally supporting the same, of a rock shaft mounted adj acent thereto, an arm rigidly secured to said shaft and overhanging said pedal, and means adjustably connecting the free end of said arm with said pedal lengthwise of the pedal.
3. In a piano, the combination with a pair of pedals, of means for pivot-ally supporting said pedals for movement about a common aXis, of a rock shaft mounted adjacent said pedals at an angle to said aXis, a pair of arms each rigidly secured to said shaft and overhanging one of said pedals, and means connecting the free end of each of said arms with its respective pedal.
