Description

` Y J. @HANNINGQ l l A NTIFRBBZING DEVICE PoR PUMPS. "N0.`103,325.\ Patented May Z4, 1870.
` "JZ//M INDIANAPOLIS, JNO@ ,0rl tilter to prevent as t `UMTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HANNING, or INDrANAPoLIs, INDrANA, AssreNoR ITo BtMsELF .AND noswELL n'nousn, or s A-ME PLAoE.-
IMPROVEMENT IN 'AN'Tlf-FREEZ'ING DEVICES -F" o'R:Pu|y|Ps.
,Spccica'tiou 'forming part Dt'. Letters Patent No. l`03,325, dated May 24, 1870.
Teelt. whom 'it may concern: l `J--Be-it known that I, JOHN G. HANNING,;of
Indianapolis, in thc county ot' Marion-'and `State of Indiana, have invented a certain Gom-- bined Anti-Freezing Valve, `Sand-Screen, and asher for'Pumps, ot' which the vfollowing is a specitication. i
, rlille first part ot'my` invention relates to preventing iron Lpumps from freezing; and itcon-- sists in the construction of the vlowervalvechamber and its arrangement at any desir'cd position in the pipe below the `reach of fr ost,
combined with .the attachment ot" a. supplementary valveand overflowvpipe in sucha man- Der that when pumping has ceased thewate'r 4contained inthe pump and pipe above the valve (will iiow out down to the level of the top of .the 'overliow-pipe.
The seqond part ojt' my invention consists in the construction of the lower-=\'alve-seat, combined with the arrangement ot' a suitable cock,
through which to Wash outany sand that may i "be drawn into the valvechamber, and a screen 'aras practicable sand from getting into thechambcr.V 1
The drawing' is a vertical 'section througlra jvalvechamber embodying my invention.
The valve-chamber A is made ot' a suitable 'form' to make a connection in' the pipe leadingl from the pump tothe water, the upper part,
. B, receiving-the pipe that connects with the pump, and the lower part, C, receiving the'pi pe that extends .to-the wuter. l
Dis the'lower valve of the pump, which is lkeptin vits proper .position bythe stern E and.
\ guide F, the'latter being a downward projec- ,tion t'roxnthe nut G, .constitut ing' the capot' the valve-chamber. A chamber is formed in4 the `top of cap Gfor the supplementary or over- {flow-valve S by means of thefh'ollow nut H,
which'is screwed into a d ange 'on t top ,ot' the cap G, as shown.V From' the chamber in this4 nut a-pipe, I, extendsupto an'ydesired height, the height o t the tube "I regulating the height fof. the waterin the-pipe connectingthe uppen par, ofthe Valve-chamber with the pump.
.The overow-valve Sis a common chick-valve,
and is held in place by thelower part of nut H, which screws down upon -the packing ot' which it is made. The watern the pipe above the valveD finds its way-into the chamber-iu hole through cap G, as shown, from whence it flows' out of tube I until it'- has descended in;-
pipe-B toal'evel with the top of the'tube I.
. The seat of the lower valve,D, isfan upward- `project-ing ange, e, which presents theQleast practicable lodging-place for sand, and also forms a basin or receptacle, L, around it for any sand that may he `drawn into thevalvechamber.
In order to conveniently washout the sand that collects in the chamber, I insert-astop cock,K, in such a manner as to tap the` basin around 4the valve-seat at the bottom, and
through which the water in pipc'B'above the chamber may be dischargedat pleasure, andA which will Wash any sand out of the1basiil.
To preventas far as practicable any sand from getting intothe chamber, I place a diaphragm ot' one plate ot perforated-sh'eet metal and o 'ne ot tine woven wire at 0. v. This valvefchamber is designed to be placed below the platform on which the pump stands, and, as will be seen, isso constructed and arranged `asto be easily accessible for repairs ot' the valves without hav ing to disconnect the pump from the pipe o r to disconnect any part ot' the pipe, as the valves canl be reached by unscrewing the nut H and cap G. This arrangement ofthe valve chamber also obviatcs the necessity ot construct-v.4
ing the barrel or base ofthe p'ump in separate pieces, thereby saving;` considerable expense in its construction, as there is nonecessity t'or the valve in the base ot' the pump. as usually arranged.
I claim as my invention- 1.-'Ehe .valve-chamber A and. connecting branches B C, constructedand arranged as de- 1 scribed, in combination with thecap G a'nd duct J, chal'nberedv nut"'H,`valve S, and-overtiow-pipe I, substantially as and for the purpose s'ett'orth.
2. 'Ihe valve-seat e, basin L^,stop-c'ocl i K,` and strainer O, arranged in connection with the valve-chamber A,.substantially as and for the 'purpose set forth.
JOHN G; HANNING.`
