Description
R.-L. FITHIAN. NECK YOKB CONNECTOR. 7 APPLICATION FILED PEB.25, 1911.
1,033,238. Patented July 23,1912.
ROBERT L. FI'IHIAN, OF WESTMOBELAND, KANSAS.
NECK-YOKE CONNECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1912.
Application filed. February 25, 1911. Serial No. 610,819.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. FITHIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westmoreland, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yoke Connectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improved neck yoke connector for connecting the center of a neck yoke to the tip of a carriage or wagon, pole or tongue, the object of my invention being to provide an improved and novel form of connector by means of which a neck yoke can be attached instantly to the tip of a pole, and secured against casual detachment therefrom, and may also be instantly detached from the tip when desired, the 'in vention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a portion of a.
pole, a neck yoke, and also showing my improved connector for attaching the neck yoke to the tip of the pole, the neck yoke being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line b-b of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the connector.
The pole 1 is provided at its front end with a tip 2, which has a ferrule or sleeve fitted thereon, and provided near its rear end with a downwardly extending locking flange 3, which is elliptical in form.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a connector 4:, which comprises a tubular body 5, adapted to fit on the tip 2, and a longitudinally disposed arm 6, which projects from one side of the body and also extends beyond the rear end thereof. An opening 7 is in the arm 6 for the reception of the strap 8, which is employed to connect the central portion of the neck yoke 9, to the connector. The rear end of the arm 6 is provided with an inwardly extending shoulder 10, whereby a notch 11 is formed between the said shoulder and the rear end of the body of the connector for the reception of the locking flange 3 of the tip. Then the connector is in the position shown 1n Fig. 1, and also in full lines in Fig. 2, with its arm 6 on the under side of the body, and the shoulder 10 on the rear side of the locking flange 3, it will be understood that the locking flange by engagement with the notch 11, prevents the withdrawing or removal of the connector from the tip. When however, the neck yoke is swung below the tip so as to cause the connector to turn and dispose its arm 6 above the tip, the connector would be entirely disengaged from the locking flange of the tip as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, of the drawings, and may then be easily drawn forwardly from the top so as to detach the neck yoke from the pole. Hence while the neck yoke is in use, and is in its normal'position, above the tip of the pole, its becoming casually detached from the pole. When it is desired to remove the neck yoke, it is only necessary to dispose the latter below the pole, thereby turning the connector so that its arm 6 becomes disposed above the tip of the pole, and the neck yoke can then be instantly withdrawn and detached from the pole, and without the necessity of unbuckling or disturbing the strap 8.
The connector is permanently attached to the neck yoke by the strap 8 and need never be detached therefrom in attaching the neck yoke to or detaching the same from the pole.
I claim In combination with a pole tip having a single locking flange projecting from the lower side thereof, a neck yoke connector comprising a tubular body to fit on and turn upon the pole tip and further provided on one side of the body with a longitudinal, radially projecting arm, the said arm having an opening at a point between the ends of the body for the reception of a strap and so that the strap can also pass around the said body, and being further provided with there is nopossibility of In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature 111 the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT L. FITHIAN.
a rearward extension having an inwardly projecting shoulder spaced from the rear end of the body, whereby a notch is formed on the inner side of the said arm between said shoulder and the rear end of the connector body for the reception of the locking flange of the tip.
