To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it' known that I, JACKSON L. KAIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the co-unty of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door hangers and has for its main object to provide a simple door hanger of improved, novel construct-ion, arranged .to slidably support elevator doors, gates or other doors, upon a suitable track.
Another object is to provide improved means in a door hanger, whereby a limited amount of vertical adjustment may be given the hanger frame to properly position the lower edge of the door with respect to the groovcd sill in which said lower edge travels.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the course of this specification, and with all of said objects and advantages in view, this invention consists in t-he several novel features of construction, arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and particularly defined in the claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawing furnished herewith, in which:
Figure 1 is a face view of a fragment of an elevator door and supporting track showing a pair of my improved door hangers used in connect-ion therewith; Fig. 2 is a detail face view, looking at the opposite side of the hanger and door; Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section taken on the line 3 3 of Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4 is a plan, with certain portions broken out to illustrate parts that would `otherwise be hidden from view and Fig. 5 is a face of one of the arms ofv the roller carrying member that forms part of the hanger frame.
Referring to said drawing, A, represents a track supported by a member B, of the inclosure, in the usual manner, said track being here shown in the form of a bar c, having a longitudinally extending' groove in its upper side, in which run the rollers of the hanger. An angle iron al projects up from the side of the bar a, andV has a horizontal flange a2, overhanging the rollers of the hanger. A fragment of a door is seen at C; it is carried by the hangers D, which are secured to the top of the door and slidably connect the door with the track.
My improved hanger is best seen in the kedge of the door C.
enlarged views, and in the preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a pair of rollers 10, journaled on a roller carrying member 11, mounted on abracket 12, which is riveted or otherwise secured to the upper Said roller carrying member 11, is shown as forked upon its ends to receive the rollers 10, and I have illustrated anti-friction bearings between said rollers and the pins 13, upon which they are journaled. Said anti-friction bearings are here shown as comprising a plurality of small rollers 13a, arrangedv within the hub of each roller andsurrounding a sleeve 13, that extends between the two fork members of the roller carrying member. The pin 13, extends through said fork members and sleeve, and is in the form of a rivet, the ends of which are upset on the outer face of said fork member.
The roller carrying member is shown as fulcrumed upon the bracket 12, in a hori- Zontal line, whereby said member may be capable of oscillation upon said bracket; this construction provides means whereby the rollers 10, may follow any slight irregularities in the tread of the track, without any appreciable jar or shock to the door.
AThe means here shown for affording such bracket and the adjacent faces of the roller carrying member 11, and washer 15. This construction permits the roller carrying member 11, to oscillate freely upon its fulcrum without any danger of unscrewing the screw 14.
The roller carrying member 11, is shown as comprising two arms 18, 18, that are arranged to be secured together in various angular positions wit-h respect to each other, to afford the vertical adjust-ment for the hanger. As here shown, each arm 18, has a jaw 19, surounding the screw 14, and preferably formed with radial serrations or teeth 20, upon one face, the teeth of one jaw being arranged to co-act with the teeth oii the other jaw to prevent angular movement or' one arm with respect to the other when said jaws are held together. In the form shown in the drawings, the same screw 14, which secures the roller carrying member 11, to the washer 15, in their pivotal connection with the bracket, acts to secure together the two arms 18, to provide a rigid roller supporting member, capable of vertical oscillation up the bracket.
To reduce the noise usually attendant in door hangers, I provide peripheral grooves in the rollers 10, in which grooves are seated tires 21, made or' suitable material. such as rubber, babbitt, leather or the like. Said tires, in running over the metal track, reduce the noise to a minimum.
In hanging a door provided with my improved hangers, it it is found that the door is hung too low, so that its lower edge strikes the sill, or if the door is too high and out et sliding engagement with the sill, the door may be raised or lowered with respect to the track, by simply unscrewing t-he screw 14, raising or lowering the door to the proper position, and then screwing up the screw 14, to clamp the jaws together. In Fig. 2 I have shown (in dotted lines) the door lowered considerably from a position that it occupies when the two arms of the roller carrying member are in alinement with each other. Thus when the door is lowered or raised, the two arms 18, assume positions that are angularly disposed with each other, thus raising or lowering the pivot point ot the roller carrying member, but in no wise atlecting the perfectoperation of the hangers.
I realize that various alterations and modilications ot this device are possible, without departing from the spirit et my invention, and I do not therefore desire to limit mysel'l' to the exact form of construction shown and described.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A door hanger comprising a bracket. arranged to be secured to a door, a two armed roller-cani'rying member mounted on said brtmket, the two arms ot said roller carrying members overlapping one another and being rigidly clamped together, but having a limited amount of angular adjustment with respect to each other in a vertical` plane, and a pair ot rollers adapted to run upon a suitable track, one journaled on each arm of said roller-carrying member.
2. A door hanger, comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to a door, an oscillatory two armed roller-carrying member fulerumed on said bracket on a common pivot, the two arms of said bracket being rigidly secured together, but capable of relative angular adjustment, and a pair ot rollers adapted to run upon a suitable track, one roller being journaled on each arm of said roller-carrying member, near its outer end.
3. A door hanger comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to a door, a two armed roller carrying member mounted on said bracket, two arms of said roller-carrying member having co-acting jaws arranged to be clamped together with the arms adjusted to any of a number of angularly disposed positions with respect to each other, clamping means therefor and a pair o' rollers adapted to run upon a suitable track and j ournaled on said arms.
4. A door hanger, comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to a door, a two armed roller-carrying member, each arm being formed with a toothed aw, the one aw engaging the other jaw, a screw extending through said bracket and arms, said screw being arranged to secure said arms together in any ot several angular positions with respect to each other, and to pivotally secure said roller-carrying member to the bracket, and rollers one j ournaled at each end said roller-carrying member.
A door hanger, comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to a door, a two armed roller-czu-rying member secured to said bracket, each arm of said roller carrying member having a toothed segmental jaw, the one engaging the other, said aws being clamped together to form a rigid member, and rollers one journaled at the end ol each arm.
G. In a door hanger, the combination with a bracket formed with a bearing aperture therein, a washer having a neck journaled in said bearing aperture, a roller-carrying member comprising two angularly adjustn able arms having co-acting jaws, a screw extending through said washer and jaws and acting to clamp together said jaws and washer, and rollers one jonrnaled at each end of said. roller-carrying member.
