Description

lrdtooKs,

IMPROVEMENT IN LATcHr-Js.-
v Theischedule 4referred to in these Lettere Patent and making part o! the same A'To allpcrsons to who-m these presents may come:
Be it known thatI, M. Pnoc'ronFAvon, of East Northwood, of 'the county of 'Rockingham andState of New Hampshire, have invented a new and nseful Improvement in Latch-Locks for Doors; and do hereby declare the same to be fully descrbedin the I following specification, and represented in the`accom panying drawing, of which.-
Figurc 1 exhibits a view of a latchboltznnl case, "with my invention combinedtherewit-h;
Figure 2 is a rear-side view, and Figure 3 an edge view of the latch-bolt. The said latch-bolt is shown at A, and its, case at B, the latter being represented as without its cover or cap.
The latch-bolt is to be so vpivoted in the case as to "he capable of turning therein in the sector of a circle, that is, from the position indicated by thedotted lines at A' to that denoted by the full lines at A.
On its rearside the bolt is recessed, as seen at b, to receive 'a locking-bolt, C, and it is also provided with a notch, a, fo'r the locking-bolt to enter, when shot forward, and the latch-bolt is down against a stud or stop b'.
The auxiliary or llocking-bolt Gis arranged between guides c c, and is tobe provided with a spring-ll, and stop-notches, e e, to operate with a stop, j; when the holt is raised by a key, g, introduced into :mikey-hole, h, of the lock-case, the whole being arranged in manner as lepresen'ted in the drawings, in which 4it will be seen that the locking-bolt is placed alongside of latchbolt, and between its pivot and recessed head, in
which the latch-holt answers as a cover or cap to keep the locking-bolt in place.
. The arrangement of the parts renders the lock sim pleand etiicient.
` 'The latch-.bolt is to extend ont ofthe case of the lock, and to play in one end thereof.
When the locking-bolt is retracted, the latch-bolt can operate as a common latch, and, when down` it may be locked hy shooti'ngy the 1ocking-bolt-into'the notch a; so,4 when the latch-bolt is up to its highest position, it may be locked therein by shooting forward the locking-bolt, which, in that case, will extend un` derneath the head g of' the latch-bolt.
I am aware that it is not new to combine with a Y main bolt, or with'a latch, a locking-bolt, such being shown in the United States Patent No. 13,163 to Edward Field, and in that granted 'February 25,1851, to Leonard Foster. I-therefore `make no claim to such.
That I claim as my improvement is 'lhe arrangement ofthe latch and its pivot, and the locking-bolt, and their construction in manner as hereinbeforedesoribed and as represented in the accompanying drawing, the said arrangement consisting in placing the locking-bolt alongside-of the latch-bolt, and between the pivot and recessed head of the latter, the latch-bolt being constructed with the cylindrical pivot and the recessed head, as represented.
' M. IROCTOR FAVOR. Witnesses:
' IRA B. Hour,
CHARLES W. HoYT.
