FUSE DEVICE.
Original application led April 3,
To all wlw/mt magooncem: Y
Be Qit known that we, EDMUND OL Sorrwerrznn and ALFRED HERZ, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in
the county of Cookv and State of Illinois,
have invented a cert-ain new and useful Improvement in Fuse Devices, of whichv the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to .the accompanying drawings, for-ming apart of this specification.
Our invention relates to fuse devices, and
especially to a type-of fuse device adapted for use in'connection with high tension currents.
' This application isa division of our application, vSerial No. 366,219, led April 3, 1907. In said other application we show two types of. device involving certain :Eeatures in common. In the present application we show one of the same devices, claiming specifically certain points or features not found in common 1n both types of device. y v
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a crossfsection of a fuse device embodying ourinvention. section of tlfe same. Fig. 3' is a cross-section taken on the line. 3 3' of Fig. 1.`
The device shown comprises a casing l, conveniently made of linsulating materialfor example, porcelain-and having a cover 2, desirabl'y made of the same material.-
The bottom offthe casing 1 is provided with an elevated or raised a Asupport for two use-holding blocks, 4 a-'nd 55, also made of insulating material. Pins or.posts.6,'6, are secured to the corners of the projection 3 and provided with adjustable nuts 7 7 and surrounded by coil springs 8, 8, which act down upon the upper or outermost block, 5. A fuse 9 1s interposed between the blocks .4 and "5, the springs 8, 8, compressing the block 5 fianly against the same. The fuse is extended beyond the endsv of the blocks 4 and 5,.and carried to metallic posts 10, 10, which are mounted'in the base of, the casing 1, and

have ends or terminalsy 11, 11', projecting out therefrom for connection.
The cover 2 is provided with a hinged or swinging member 12, carried by a pin or spindle 13, and subject coiled spring 14, tending tov swing and hold said member normally against the-block 5. Th'e partition 12 thus `divides the interior of the casing into two compartments.
Inv the operation of the device, vthe fuse 9 is normally in the position shown in the drawings between the blocks 4 and 5. Upon the passage of an overload'current, the fuse softens, and the block 5, acting by, immediately compresses the fuse, crushing and disseminating the same before it has time to blow. The result is that the fuse is really obliterated or snued out, and does not actually blow, asis cus-v there are,
tomary with fuses. Consequently, none of the usual accompaniments of fuse action, namely, arcing and vaporization of the fuse material. Thus, the `fuse device is to the tension of a j capable of use in high tension circuits, where the ordinary fuse cannotbe used, -the device A acting to open the circuit on very high voltages without any arcing or. explosion, or other disastrous and dangerous results.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. A. device of the class ing a casing having its ttom provided with a projection forming a fuse support, a fuse-block adapted to rest upon'a fuse on said project-ion,
s cied com ris- L P terminals in the bottom of the casing on opposite sides of the fuse supj projection, -pins on said projection portino' b the .,biock, and
and extending through 's 'rings on said pins acting against said 'b ook. I
2 A'device of the class specified compris ing'a casing having a fuse supporting inember, terminals for the fuse, springs for the same, and
afuse blockand a cover haviiiga spring-actuated member acting 'upon 'said' ,A
fuse block.
3. A device of the class specified comprasing a casing having its bottom provide with a projection adapted to supporta fuse,
dsa
ber extending through said `fuse block and provided with springs arranged to force it I against thesame'. Y 'y fuse terminais on opposite sides of said pro- In Witness whereof, We hereunto subscribe 10 jeetiomafuse block for the fuse, pins carried our names this 21st day of August A. D.,
