DOOR-LATCH.
1,033,110. Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. MALoNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. My invention relates to a new and improved door latch, referring more particurly to-that type of latch used upon the door of an automobile or other motor vehicle. It is the object of my invention, among other things, to construct such a latch so that it may be operated from the top or' side of the door by turning the respective handles in either direction, as well as to so design the same that it may be produced with few .parts capable of'bein'g readily assembled and manufactured at the minimum cost,
To these,'and other ends, my invention consists of the new and improved door latch as herein set forth, and more particularly set forth in the claim.
Referring to the drawings in which like numerals designate like parts in the several figures; F ure 1 is an inside view of my improved oor latch; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3 is an'edge view thereof; Fig. .4 is a perspective View of the latch; and Fig. "5 is a perspectivejview of one of the Q followers.
In the, practice of my invention, I provide a body member 1, having'a face plate 2 at one-end and a lug 3 thereon adjacent to the opposite end and near the elongated recess 1. Slidable between the 'lugs 5-5 upon the body member 1, is .the latch 6, the head 7 'of which rojects through an opening 1n the face plate 2. Movement of this latch away from the body member is .prevented by the plate S tha't is secured at one end to 5 the lugs 55' by the screws 9 and at the other end to the face plate 2 by the lips 101O that enter openings in the said face plate. .A slot 11 is provided in the outer end of said plate to permit movement of the 9 latch head 7': 'Lateral movement of the tail ofthe latch is prevented by the, lug 12 on the body member, that enters the slot 13 in said tail and having a washer l4 fixed thereon by the screw 15. A spiral spring 16 fixed at one end to a post 1'? on the body 'memberand with itsfree end against the tail of the latch,jcxerts its pressure so as to hold the latch with its head projecting be-' yond the face plate 2, as shown in Fi s. 1 and 2.. From the side of the door the atch is moved rearwardly by rotation of the spindle 18 through the handle 19, upon which is the follower 20, having the arms 21 thereon with rounded ends that engage the shoulders 22 upon the latch. This spindle is supported in part by the plate 8, and an opening 23 is provided in the latch to permit said spindle to pass therethrough. From the top of the door the latch is moved rearwa-fidly by rotation of the spindle 24 through the handle 25, said,spind1e being journaled within the lug 3 .and having a. follower 26 upon the inner end thereof, of substantially the same shape as the follower 20, the arms 27-27 thereoncorresponding with the said arms 21, and contacting with the front face 28 of the wing 29 that projects laterally from the tail of said latch. A pocket 30 in said wing receives that portion of the follower 26' that does not. comprise the arms 27, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Upon'the underside of the wing 29' is a tongue 31 that projects into the recess 4, provided for clearance of the follower 26 during its rotation. 1
In. operation the latch is secured to the door of an automobile or other motor vehicle, in a well known manner, and operated manually from either the top or side of the door by merely rotating the spindles 18 and 24. in either direction.
Knobs or similar devices may be substituted for the handles 19 and 25, if desired, and in other ways the details of my invention may be changed, so that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, the combination with a latch, having a head thereon, an opening therethrough in the rear of the head, a shoulder upon both sides of said opening, a wing upon one Side of the end thereof opposite to said head, said-wing having a pocket therein at substantially a right angle to the said opening, with contact faces upon either side thgreof, that are 119 at substantially a right angle to the 311 01 81 said shoulders; of a body member; two spin;
