LADYS SKIRT.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 22, 1910. Serial No. 583,296.
has more particular relation to that class of garments in whlch the upper portion or,
waist line may be adjusted to various sizes.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a garment of the class recited in which the upper portion or waist line may be adjusted to adesired size, by means of inter-locking mediums.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a garment ofthe class recited in which the upper portion or waist. band is formed for the reception of a drawstrin the ends of which are constructed to interluck with the waist band of the garment at a point adjacent the'vent of the garment.
A still further object of the present in vention is to provide a garment the upper portion of which is equipped with darts or 'gussets of pliable material, the said upper portion of the garment including the darts or gussets being formed for the reception of a drawstring, whereby the waist line may be adjusted to desired sizes inter-locking means being present between the drawstring and the garment adjacent the vent thereof for maintaining the waist size thus secured.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a ladys skirt of neat and attracti appearance, the upperportion or waist line of which may be made adjustable by simple, eilicient and comparatively inexpensive means and which shall be comfortable to the wearer.
Other objects of the invention relate to general details of construction and arrange ment of parts as will hereinafter appear.
The inventior consists of the improvements hcreinatn-r described and finally The nature. characteristic feature and scope of the invention will be more fully Understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which:
Figure. l, is a perspective view of a garment embodying the invention, Fig. 2, is a fragmentary view of the rear portion of a garment looking from the inside and illustrating the drawstring in unlocked position, Fig. 3, is a top or plan view of Fig. 2, illustrating the drawstring inter-locking with the garment, Fig. 4, is a fragmentary view principally in section and drawn to an enlarged scale of one of the inter-locking;
mediums disclosed in the foregoing figures, and Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the upper portion of a ladys skirt illustrating a somewhat modified form of gusset In the drawings the upper portion or waist line of the skirt 1, and preferably in the rear half ofthe circumference thereof and upon each sideof the waist line are=inserted darts or gussets'2, of pliable material. These gussets are formed of material considerably more pliable. than the skirt'material. In practice the gussets are usually formed of stockinette or similar very pliable material and the skirts are usually formed of silk or other relatively stiff material.
.The entire circumference of the waist line of the garment 1, including the darts 2, is turned over and attached to the skirt in terior as by stitches 3, to form a drawstring receiving space l. Upon each side of and adjacent the vent 5, of the skirt interiorly considered, the waist band. or hem thus formed is apertured as at 6, 1n buttomholelike fashion through- Which the respective ends of the drawstring .7, shown as being tape are passed, see Fig. 2. It will be thus understood that the remaining portion of the drawstring 7 encircles the remainder of the upper portion of the skirt, the same be- 'ing incased throughout by the hem just described. The ends 8, of the tape 7, which are extended through the openings 6, may be equipped upon their outer faces with devices 9, adapted to inter-lock with other devices 1'0, and 11, united to the inner face of the waist band of the garment. As clearly shown in Figs. 2, and 3, these devices 1011 are located upon each side of and adjacent observed that the devices '10, of the Waist;
band are shown as bein more widelv se arrangement of parts.
arated or spaced than are the devices 11. This arrangement and construction of parts is utilized, in order that fine adjustments, of the waist band may be secured. when the de vices 9, of the tape 7, and said devices 10,
and 11, are interlocked. Thus, if the hips may be decreased by virtue of the fact that the -gussets 2, being more pliable than the skirt material, take up the fullness of the skirt without, however, leaving the waist line in a bulged or bulky condition. When the desired size has been obtained, such size may be made temporarily secure by uniting the ends of the tape 7, with respect to the waist band of the skirt by virtue of the inter-locking devices 9, lO-11. It may be here stated that if the waistline of the underskirt-was in a bulged or bulky condi tion the outer skirt would not hang evenly and would present a bad appearance. Likewise if the locking attachments and drawstrings :were upon, the undershirt exterior they would serve to render an uneven surface, th s tending to present protuberances upon the undershirt exterior, which is'disadvantageous.
In Fig. 5, the gusset 12, is shown as being substantially U-shape, in order that additional. fullness of the skirt may be compensated for, the drawstring and'interlocking attachments being of the construction hereinbcfore described.
What I claim is:
A garment of the class described having its waist line fitted with oppositely disposed pliant non-elasticgussets possessing considerably more pliability than the skirt material at least a portion of the waist line in cluding said gussets being of tubular and puckered formation for drawstring accommodation, said waist line being slotted upon its inner sides adjacent the vent of thegarlnent, drawstring portions for the tubular parts the free ends of which pass through said slots to the skirt, interior, a series of fastening devices secured to the free ends of said drawstring portions upon the outer faces thereof, and a series of other fastening devices secured to the inner sides of the waist line upon opposite sides of the vent of the garment, said fastening devices being of male and female construction fbr inter-locking one with another whereby fullness of the skirt waist line may be compensated for by the pliable vents to provide an even and non-bulky waist line surface when said parts are interlocked, said drawstring portions being entirely hidden by the outer skirt parts.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
