DISPLAY DEVICE,
' -Appiication filed February-6,1911. serial No. 606,912. A
To all whom it-may concern.'
Be it known thatl I, ANTHONY VANDER- vnLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have ,invented an Improvement in Display Devices, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings'representing like parts. Y -y The invention to be hereinafter described relatesto devices for displaying goods, such as merchandise and the like, and more particularly to such devices as used in stores` for the exhibition of goods for sale.
ln such devices it is desirable that the goods or merchandise be normally maintained in a case or compartment to protect the goods or merchandise from dust or dirt andfrom handling by unauthorized persons,
and at the same time that the goods or merchandise be. capable of ready inspection or.
examination when withdrawn from the case or compartment. It has heretofore been proposed to provide a rotatable support/for the goods or merchandise which shall be movable to and from a position within the case or compartment, and when being so bodily moved shall be prevented from rotative movement so that the goods or rack, as it may be termed, shall not injure the case or compartment, and shall be freed to rotative movement when at the front of the case or compartment. It
' has also been proposed to provide means,
so that when the rack is in front position and rotated, the rack cannot be moved back int-o tlie-case; An instance of the above is presented in the application of Oscar L. Smith, Serial No. 524,451, filed October 29, 1909.
V The aims and purposes of the present invention are to provide a display device of simple \construction and wherein the rotatable rack shall be sustained in an efficient manner as it is bodily moved with Arelation to the case or compartment, and wherein improved means is provided for locking the rotatable rack from rotativel movement while being moved to and from a position wit-hin the case or compartment'and is freed to rotative movement when moved to` front position, and wherein, when in front position, the rack is locked from bodily movement into the case.y These aims and-pursupport for the to the invention, will best be made clear from the following.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a front elevation of a display device embodying the presentinvention, parts being broken away; Fig. 2 isa section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1; Fig;'3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. l, with the case omitted, 'showing the carriage and track frame beneath the floor of the case' with the carriage in rear positiongfFig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with some of the parts omitted to more clearly show the action of the locking device when the carriage is moved to .front position; and Fig. 5 is a plan view. of the track frame, the rack, and carriage, the inclosing case being omitted. f The inclosing case or compartment 1 may be of any desired type, and' is herein shown as comprising a top 2, and sides 3, and back- 4, which may be formed of glass, the front of the case being closed by suitable doors, not shown. The bottom of the case may be formed of a base piece 5, between which and the floor G of the case the supporting carriage may conveniently be located.
-Suitably secured to the case between the base piece 5 and floor (S is the track frame preferably comprising the side members 7, 7 Figs. 1, 3', 4 and 5, extending from front to rear of the case. lThis track frame vforms a suitable guide lfor the carriage`A, Figs. 1 and 2, and may be of vany convenient type, but as herein shown consists of the side members 7 7 formed of metal having hanged upper and lower portions 8, 9, Fig. tween which run the rollers 10 connectedby suitableaxles 114 on which rest the bearing portions 12 of the carriage A, suitable stops 13 on the carriage serving to maintain the rolling supports for the carriage iii proper relation theiieto. rhe front and rear por; tions of tlielside members 7, 7 may be con-V nected by cioss pieces 14,14.
It will be noted that, the carriage has a rearward extending portion 15 and that the rollers 10 are widely separated, the effect being that the carriage is `more effectively supported and prevented from tipping as it is moved toward and from its position within the case. To1 further prevent any tiltingv dmovement, the carriage may have secured l the traciiframle, Figs. 2, 3 4.
Specification of Lettersl Patent. Patented July 16, i912 i y poses ofthe'iiivention, and others incident One'ol'ithe purposesofithe present inven 'tion is to 4support 4therotatable.rack in a moved to and from its normal position within the case. As ,one means to this end, the invention contemplates sustaining the rack carrying or upright shaft upon an antifriction bearing and providing means at' the base and near the top of the shaft to securely brace the same while providing eiiicient bearingsupports.-
In the particular form of the invention shown, the carriage hasrising-thereupon the pedestal portion 18 which is either formed integral with the carriage, or, as shown in the drawings, may be constructed separately therefrom and' secured thereto as by the bolts 19, see Figs. 1 and 3. yIt will be evident that the principal strain upon the carriage, and that which is most effectively exercised by the rack as it is being moved to and from its position within the case, is in a direction longitudinally ofthe carriage, and to meet this condition the pedestal 18 has front and rear extending portions 20, as indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3,
preferably formed as webs connecting the base portion of the pedestal with its bearing portion 21. It will be noted from FiO. 1 that the bearing portions 2O extend through a suitable slot 22 in the floor of the case and that abovethe floor of the case the bearing 2l is enlarged. Secured withinth'e bearing 21 aud'extending upward vtherefrom is the sleeve 23 having a bearing portion 24 at its upper end which may be of any usual `or desired character.
upper and lower bearing portions 21 and 24 is the rack carrying or upright shaft 25 which, at its upper portion, may have secured thereto the hub 26 from which project the spider arms l27' carrying suitable rodsv or other devices 28 for supporting garments or other goods to be displayed. Obviously, the form, character and shape of the rack is not material to the present invention, and that shown and described is for the purpose of making clear the characteristic features of the invention without limiting the same thereto.
Below the end of the rack carrying shaft 425, the carriage has a supporting piece 29 which may be of hardened metal suchA as steel and on which is sustained a hardened pin 30 secured to the lower end of the shaft 25, said hardened block and hardened pin thus acting as an anti-friction bearing for sustaining the Weight of the rack and shaft and permitting the rack to be readily and easily rotated.
From the construction thus far described, it will be apparent Athat as the rack is Passing through the sleeve 23 and the moved to and from its position'within the case or compartment, the widely separated bearing portions of the carriage on the track frame and the correspondingly widely separated bearingportions for the rack carrying shaft 25- and-the'1ongitudnallyextending Web portions 20 of the pedtions 20 of the pedestal extending in a longitudinal direction, the tendency to front and rear rocking movement will effectively be obviated while at the same time theslot in the -floor of the case can be made correspondingly small or narrow. It will like- Wise be noted that the hardened pin and block, one on the carriage and the other on the end of'the shaft 25, will afford a convenient and simple, durable and effective anti-friction device for taking the end thrust of the shaft and its load and yet permitting the shaft to be readily rotated when free toI said movement.l
It is desirable in `this class of devices, when the rack is moved to its position within the` case that it be prevented lfrom rotating on its axis, because said rotative movement will, under such conditions, injure or break the case; on the other hand it is desirable that the rack be freed to rota-v tive movement when it reaches its front po-` sition with respect to the case, and that when so rotated it belocked or prevented wfrom being bodily moved into the case.
The present invention affords means to accomplish the ends stated and, as one con- `venient form of such means, the followin is shown and described. Secured to the lower portion of the shaft 25 is a disk 31, Figs. 2 and 4, said disk being provided with diametrically opposite recesses 32 which are so related to thevarms 28 of the rack that when said recesses are in the position indi-A cated by Figs. 3 and 4, the rack will be properly related to the case to enable the rack to be moved ginto and out of the case without liability of injury to the case by contact with the rack. Pivotally mounted at 33 on the carriage and adjacent the disk 31 is a lever 34, for identification to bel known as the locking lever. This lever carries a roll 35 suitably supported thereon as by a bracket or casting 36, as shown, said roll 35 being adapted to engage either of. the rollers 32, as will hereinafter more fully appear. Alsofsecured to the carriage A at 37, Figs. 3 and 4, is a lever 38 which, for identification, may be known as the lever catch, and connecting the lever 38 and one arm of thelever 34 is a spring 39, the normal tendency of which is to move the locking leverl contra-clockwise, viewing FigsL portion 40, the locking lever w-ill belocked.
from movement on itspivot 33, 'as is shown,-
for instance, in Fig. 3, but when the lip 4l and ,shoulder 40 of said respective 'levers arediseng'aged, as in Fig. 4,. thenthe locking lever 34 is freed to be moved onvits pivot 3,3,
' as will be readily apparentfrom Fig. 4.
" ing, as indica-ted in Figs. 3, 4 andyto-f Mounted in fixed position and preferably on one of the side members 7 of the track frame is a trip 42 having two finger .portions'rf", 44 ofuneqnal length and extendward the path of.-.movement .of the carriage. The trip 42 is disposed-inthe path of movement of the end 45of the lever-catch 3S, so that as the carriage is' moved from its rear position, as indicated in Fig. 3, to
' its front position, as indicated in Fig. 4, the `end 45 of the lever catch willV pass by the projection 43 of the trip but will engage. the longer projection 44 of the trip, lwith the result that the end 45 of the lever catch will be moved contra-clockwise,v thereby Jfreeing the shoulder portion 40 thereof from engagement with the part 41 ofthe locking lever, the parts then being in position as indicated in Fig. 4..
With the :arts in position as indicated in Fig. 4, due to bearing the carriage bodily from its position within the case to the front ofthe case, it will be lnoted that the rack may be rotated upon its vertical axis by a slight pull tending to such rotative movement, whereby the roll 35 of the locking lever is forced out of the notch 32 against the action of the spring 39 and the rack can be moved' rotatively backward and forward to any degree. Vhen, however, a notch 32 passes the roll, the roll will drop into the notch and the parts will assume position, as indicated inFig. 4, the rack being then ,properly disposed with relation to the case to be moved thereinto without danger of injuring-the case.
Vhen the rack is rotated from the-position indicated in Fig. 4, and the `roll 35 is forcedA out of the notch 32, the end portion 4i of the locking lever passes over and beyondgthe shouldered portion 40 of the lever catch'so that said lever catch cannot be .moved clockwise, and since the end 45 of the levercatch is maintained between the projectiens't, 44 of the trip at this time, it follows that the rack cannot be moved. to-
vard the rear position within the case.
i "Thus when therack is rotated so that the? .arms thereof wouldbe liable to injure the ca sie,"-if`moved bodily with reference thereto,
thevrack is locked from. such bodily movefment', but Whenthe rackis located-'with re.
spect to the case s o thatl such injury would Vnot "be liable, then thel .rack islocked ,from
rotative movement but free .to bodily movement/toward or from its position within'the case.
3 and that of Fig. V4, itis desirable .that Aits forward mover-nent be checked` at the proper point and to this end suitablebufers 46are provided as will be clear fromFigs. 3 and 4. While the Hdetails of the'locking-devi-ce and catchv andthe relationofthe catch to vthe trip arey preferred asv a good and conf-venien-t' form ofthe invention, it isl to be' lunderstood that 7these parts may be diferently disposed and combinedl in different relations, the purposebeing that as the carriage and rack move to and from-the' position within the case, the rack :be locked from As the rackl is'moved toward-thelront of'v the case fronr'theposition-findicated by Fig.
rotative' movement, and that when the cart riage- .il/15d rack are moved to the frontrposif tio'nl the rack be free tolrotative movement,
-and that when so freed, and rotated,.therack and carriage be locked from bodily movef ment into the case.
