Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1 6, 1912.
Application filed October 13, 1909. Serial 11o. 522,400.
To all whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, ANDREW M. OsTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State or' Illinois, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specication.-
My invention relates to improvements 4in combination tools and has for its object the production of a combination tool of improved construction and operation.
My invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My inventionwill be best understood b reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a top plan view of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, a side elevation of Fig. 1, Fig. 4, a side elevation of one of the tool members, Fig. 5, a side elevation of the other tool member, Fig. G, a side elevation f one of the members of the bottle openerembodied in the tool, Fig. 7 a side elevation of the saw shown in operative position, Fig. 8, a side elevation of the saw detached from its handle, Fig. 9, a side elevation of the gimlet in operative position, Fig. l0, a side elevation of the gimlet removed from its handle, and Fig. 11, a side elevation of the cork screw in operative position.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises pivoted members 1 and 2 pivoted together in pincer form and provided with pincer vjaws 8 equipped with engaging teeth so as to constitute a pipe wrench. The xpincer jaw on member 2 carries an'oiitwardly extending hatchet head 4 while the pincel' jaw on tong 1 carries an oppositely disposed hammer head 5. Ditl1 erent sized wire nippers 3 and t' are provided in members 1 and 2 adjaj cent their pivotal point. Pincer jaws 3 are provided `with scored meeting faces 6 adapted to constitute ordinary pincer faces.. A punch 7 is secured on member l and is adapted to cooperate with an oppositely disposed punch block 8 on member 2. A saw lblade 9 is adapted to rest in a suitable recess 1n member 2 where it is secured in po-v sition by means of set screw 10 engaging a notch 11 at the inner end thereof. A. gimlet 12 is adapted to rest in a recess in lug 14 and is also held by a spring'15 secured to another spring 16 on member 1. Gimlet 12 is provided with an inner end ,correspending to the inner end of saw blade Q and 1s provided with a notch 13 initsinner end which is adapted to enter a suitable recess in the end of member 2 and engage saidv set screw 10 while saw blade 9 is in its inoperative position as indicated in 9. The inner end of saw blade 9' is also 'adapted to enter the same recess and be secured in position by set screw 10 as indicated in Fig. 7. Cork screw 17 issecured to a piv- -roted block l18 which isprovided with a V-h shaped -project-ion '19 adapted to enter' V- shaped grooves 2O located at right angles to eachother in spring member 16 and adapted to hold said cork screw in either its folded or operative position. The outer end of .meinber 2 is provided with a screw driver.blade 21. At its lower end memberd is divided as shown into branches 22 and 23,- the lower end of branch 22 being provided with a conical point 24 and the lower end of branch' 23 with an edge 25, the said point and edge being adapted to constitute a can opener. The inner side of branch 23 is provided with a Vshaped projection 2G adapted to coperate with branch 22 to serve as a bottle opener for removing metallic sealing caps from bottles. .f It will be observed that` the above .described tool will serve a multitude of'pui'.- poses and will be found exceedingly con'- venient as a house-hold article.
l While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying` my invention into effect this may be varied or modified without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact detailsofconstruction set forth but desire to availniyself of such variations and modifications.asiI come Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i In a combination tool, a handle having a socket open at both ends, in combination,
shank a apted t-o be inserted in said :socket from the o posite ends and together filling the same, t e ends of said Shanks being reduced to one half their width forming shoulders against which the end of the opi with a'pair of tools each providcdiwith a posite shankvabuts and provided with semi- In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo Subscribing Witnesses.
