RAILWAY-SWITCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR CoULoMBE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Railway- Switch, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to railway switches, and it has for its object to provide one having a rock shaft extending longitudinally of the main tracks, with two arms secured to the rock shaft, one of the arms having means for operating the switch rail, and the other arm having means by which it is adapted to be operated by an adjustable member on a car.
Additional objects of my invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which Figure 1 is a sectional longitudinal elevation showing my improvement; Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 1, showing the means for rocking the shaft; and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 1, showing how the rock shaft is adapted to I operate the switch rail.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that in bearings in a tube 5 there is journaled a rock shaft, 6, the tube 5 being preferably disposed in the road bed beneath the ties 7 to which the main rails 8 are secured. Arms 9 and 10 are secured to the rock shaft 5. To the arm 10 there is articulated a link 11, this link 11 being secured to a pin 12, this pin being secured to the switch rail 13, which is disposed for moving laterally on a seat 14, there being a slot 15 in the said seat through which the pin 12 is disposed. The other arm 9 is articulated to a pin 16, which is disposed through a slot 17, in a seat 18, on which a lever 19 is disposed, the lever 19 being pivoted at one end at 20, and to the other end the pin 16 is secured. A tapering guide 21 is provided, which. leads to the lever 19, at its pivoted end 20. On the car 22 there is a lever 23, at the lower terminal of which there is journaled a wheel 24, and when the motorman on the car is desirous of throwing the switch rail 13 he operates the lever 23 so Specification of Letters Patent.

that the wheel 24 will be disposed either to the right or to the left of the guide 21, and as the car advances the wheel 24; will be disposed between one of the sides 25 of the seat 18 and one of the sides of the lever 19, so that the wheel 24 will move the lever 19 which by means of the arm 9 will rock the shaft 5 rocking the arm 10, and operating the link 11 to move the switch rail 13 in the manner indicated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a railway switch a main rail, a seat disposed at the side of the main rail and below the horizontal plane at the top of the main rail, there being a slot in the bottom of the seat, a switch rail disposed for moving in the seat, a pin on the switch rail extending in the slot, a rock shaft, an arm on the rock shaft, a link secured at one end to the pin below the seat and articulated at its other end to the arm, a second seat disposed below the horizontal plane at the top of the main rail and having a slot and sides extending upwardly substantially to the horizontal plane at the top of the main rail, a tapering guide secured to the seat between the sides thereof, a lever pivoted to the seat between the sides, and forming a continuation of the tapering guide, a pin secured to the lever and disposed in the lastmentioned slot, and an arm secured to the rock shaft, and articulated to the lastmentioned pin.
2. In a railway switch a main rail, a seat disposed at the side of the main rail and below the horizontal plane at the top of the main rail, there being a slot in the bottom of the seat, a switch rail disposed for moving in the seat, a pin on the switch rail extending in the slot, a rock shaft, an arm on the rock shaft, a link secured at one end to the pin below the seat and articulated at its other end to the arm, a second seat disposed below the horizontal plane at the top of the main rail and having a slot and sides extending upwardly substantially to the horizontal plane at the top of the main rail, a tapering guide secured to the seat between the sides thereof, a lever pivoted to the seat between the sides, and forming a continuation of the tapering guide, a pin secured to the lever and disposed in the last-mentioned slot, and an arm secured to the rock shaft, and articulated to the last-mentioned pin,
