To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that I, A rHUR BATEs, a subject of-the King of Great Britain, residing at Leicester, in the county of Leicester, England, have invented certain new Improvements in. Planing-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention'relates to an improvement intended for presses and more especially presses in which one of the pressure memhers is made of wood or similar material which is liable to become roughened or uneven under repetition of the pressing operation, and comprises an attachment to presses of the above type by which such inequalities or roughness of the pressure member may be removed and a smooth surface imparted thereto.
This invention is especially applicable to that class of presses of the above type that are used for dying out sheet material, such as leather, felt, etc. Presses of this type usually have a wood cutting'bed into which the sharp edge of the die is forced slightly in the operation of the machine. It will be readily understood that sucha bed soon becomes roughened under this action of the die and must be re-surfaced. Especially is this the case when the member which acts to force the die toward the bed has a movement substantially parallel to the surface of the bed in addition to its pressure applying movement which is substantially perpendicular to such bed, as a member having these two movements will sometimes act to force the die toward and into the bed with a combination of these two movements, thus greatly shortening the time within which the surface of the bed becomes too rough for satisfactory Work.
The device of this invent-ion is also useful when the surfaces of the pressure members are not exactly parallel Whether this is due to irregularity in the mounting of one or both of said members or to other reasons, and in such cases may be employed to bring the. said surfaces into the desired parallel relationship.

A principal feature of this invention relates to an attachment to be. applied to presses of the above or similar types by means of which the surface of the bed may be trued into parallelism with the acting face of the cooperating pressure member.
Another feature of this invention relates to a resurfacing attachment to be applied to presses of the above or similar types in which the movement of the pressure applying member relatively to the bed may be utilized to operate the means for re-surfacing the bed and for imparting thereto a surface parallel to the movement of the said pressure applying member.
A further feature relates to means for causing the resurfacing means to act on different portions of the bed on successive actuations of the said pressure applying member,-while another feature relates to the provision of means for reversin the movement, relatively to the bed, of the resurfacing means, and still another feature of the invention relates to the provision of means for preventing actuation of the pressure mem bers relatively to each other while the' gtrullfig or smoothing tool is in position between t cm.
Further features of the invention relate to the provision of means for "adjusting the feeding means for the tool; as the bed is worn or smoothed down, and for preventing injury to the feeding means should the feed; g

The frame of the machine is indicated at 2 and as shown supports the presser bed 4, preferably of wood or similar material, and the hollow post 6 onwhich the pressure member 8 is mounted to swing. into various positions over said-bed. By vertically reciprocating said hollow post 6 as by means of sition over the bed the said member is moved to exert pressure at the place desired. For adjusting the height of the pressure member 8, the connection 15 between the eccentric 9 and the hollow shaft 6 that supports that pressure member is made adjustable as by ineans of a rod 16 operated by a hand wheel 17.

Suitably secured to pressure member 8 is a plate 20 on which atool carrier 22 is mounted so as to slide longitudinallyof said member 8. On carrier 22 is mounted'a block 24 which preferably is pivotally attached thereto by a pin 25 and which carries the truing knife or tool 26 while a spring 27 mounted between said 4 block and carrier tends to hold the tool 26 with its cutting edge in position to act upon the bed 4 of the machine, the limit of such movement being determined by contact of a part of block 24 with carrier 22. The pawl carrier 35 oscillates about the same axis of rotation as the screw 30 and is provided with two arms or extensions which extend into proximity tov the opposite sides of an abutment 42 which in the construction illustrated in the drawing is in the form of a ball-he2ided bolt screwed into a socket 44 supported from a clamp 45 which is attached to the table 4 by a bolt 46.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 5, the pawl carrier 35 in addition 'to the pawl 33 also carries a spring pressed plunger 48 seated in a second recess in said carrier and engaging the ratchet wheel 32 to prevent rotation thereof except when moved by pawl 33. The form of tool which is preferably used with this attachment is indicated in Fig. 6. and as shown said tool consists of a bar cut out at the end 'to form a planing edge.
In the form of tool illustrated in Fig. 2 one edge only is adapted to serve as a planing edge but in that form illustrated in Fig. 4 the tool 28 is made double so that either end may serve as the planing'edge. The tool carrier 29 shown in this figure is supported somewhat differently from tool carrier 22 shown in Fig. 2, but in other respects shown .in Fig. 2.
"In the use of this apparatus the plate 20 is attached to the pressure member 8 and clamp 45 is attached to the table 4, preferably to one of the clamping strips '50'which are employed to hold to ether the wooden portion of the table. By turning abutment 42 inits socket the height of the portion thereof which acts upon pawl carrier 35 may be adjusted according to the height of the table 4 and socket 44 may also be adjusted on its supporting clamp 45 to hold the said, abutment at the bed. These adjustments are intended to bring the head of abutment 42 into position to cooperate properly with pawl carrier 35. Having adjusted pawl 33 to move the tool carrier 22 in the direction desired along the pressure member 8, the operator grasps a handle 52 provided on plate 20 and swings the pressure member 8 overthe table 4. The oscillations imparted by the operator to the pressure member 8 will bring the extensions uponpawl carrier 35 into contact with opposite faces of abutment 42 so that the carrier will be rocked and will actuate the ratchet Thus by swinging the pressure different distances fromact on successive portions of the bed on suc- -cessive movements of said member 8 so as to swung in one direction.

' As shown, the apparatus is provided with a safety device in the form of a bent arm 545suitably attached to the plate 20 and extending under the handle 12 of the pressure member to prevent said handle from being. depressed to cause reciprocation of said pressure'member toward the bed 4 while the 25 attachment is in-place. As shown in Fig. 7, the end of this handle 54 is forked to embrace the rod 55 which passes into a recess in said handle 12 and the ends of the forks are beveled to provide an adjustment for the varying spaces found between the lower surface ofthe handle and'the surface of the pressure member 8 in different machines.
The provision of this curved arm 54 is important, for, as will be evident from an inspection of Fig. 1, if the press should be started by a depression of handle 12 while the attachment is in. place, the movement of pressure member 8 toward the bed 4 would probably cause breakage of the machine. As shown also, the attachment is provided with a' second safety device in the form of a spring pressed plunger 56 which bears against a fiat surface formed upon the stem of the socket 44-. which enables the abutment 42- to turn about the axis of the stem of the socket in case of abnormal stress being exerted upon the abutment either by reason of improper adjustment between said abutment spring for the and the pawl carrier 35, or by reason of the pawl carrier 35 'being prevented by any reason from oscillating. A bolt 58 is'provided to adjust the degree of tension of the plunger 56. If desired, means, such as an adjustingscrew 60, may be mounted in tool carrier 22, this screw having a point which enters between block 24 and the side of said tool carrier 22 to turn said block on its pivot 25 against the force of spring 27 thereby raising the end of tool 28 to an inoperative position in cases in which it is desired to keep the said tool 'temporarily out of action .SO that the traversing effect may be obtained without acting upon the bed. Having described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a bed, of a member angularly movable over said bed about a fixed axis at one side thereof, resurfacing means carried by said member and acting during the angular movements thereof to resurface the bed, and automatic means to cause said resurfacing means to act on different and adjacent portions of the bed during successive angular movements of said member.
