` GATE HINGE. l APPLICATION FILED NOVA-1, 11111.
Patented July 16, 1912.

GATE-HINGE.
Application led November 9, 1911.
T o all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, BURTON C. Rossum., residing at Keene, .in the county of Cheshire and State ot New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Gate-Hinges, of which the tollowing is a specification.
This invention, which generally relates to gate hinges, more particularly has reiterence to hinges for self-closing gates in which an inclined trackway or bearing is provided for returning the gate to the closed position when released, after being manually opened, and the said invention primarily has for its object to provide an in1- proved hinge for a gate of the character stated that is simple, can be economically made, easily manipulated and which ettectively serves its intended purposes.
My invention consists of a hinge embodying the peculiar construction and novel arrangement ot parts hereinafter fully described and specifically set out in the ap pended claim and illustrated in the drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of so much ot a self-closing farm gate as is necessary to illustrate the practical application of my said invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bracket member or tixedly held bearing portion ot' my improved hinge construc tion. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section of the parts as shown in Fig. L1, and Fig. 1 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 3, the hinge post being shown in section.
In the drawing, I have shown so much of a self-opening farm gate as is necessary to illustrate the practical application of my invention, and in the said showing, 12 designates the rear bar of the gate, 5 the hinge post and 3 a strap iron bolted to the upper end of the gate bar 12 and'which has an out.- wardly projected apertured member 30,
t'or pivotally engaging with the upper hinge pintle a, integrally formed with the upper hinge bracket /10 that is secured upon the upper end of the hinge post 5.
13 designates the lower hinge and bearing portion oi my improved hinge construction upon which the lower end of the gate is mounted and which forms, as it were, a bearing bracket for the lower or tulcrum bearing for the gate. The bracket 13 is a substantially U-shape member whose opposite arms 131---13a are bent upwardly upon Specification of Letters Patent.

a sharp incline so as to t'orm the runway for the roller or tulcrum bearing let presently again referred to, and the said arms 13 have port-ions bent at right angles to the central portion of the bearing 13 to form straps 13b, which are apertured for receiving the bolts that connect with the post The bearing 13 also includes a' tlat cent "al horizontal extension 1S provided wit-h a cent-ral aperture 13, and the rear portion of the extension 13C is rolled or otherwise formed into a long bolt 13e for passing through the post 5, the end of the bolt being threaded to receive nuts 13'E (see Fig.
15 designates the lower hinge pintle-that is formed by bending a plate 1G to the desired shape and with a toot portion 15'nl that is provided with an aperture to receive a fastening bolt for securing it to the post 5.
The fulcrum bearing 1st hereinbetore referred to is in the nature of a roller bearing, and it is journaled in a keeper pla-te 18 that .is integral with and forms the rear end of a bifurcated strap member 19, which embraces the lower gate rail or bar, and is bolted thereto as shown.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, the complete construction, the manner in which my gate may be inz'lnipulated and its advantages will be apparent.
It will be noticed, that when provided with my hinge construction it is not necessary to dismount to open the gate, since in swinging the gate in either direction the lower or ulcrum bearing 18 of the gate hinge will ride up on the incline portions of the bearing bracket 18 and when pressure on the gate is released, the said t'ulcrum bearing 1li will readily swing back down the incline portions la to the closed position.
That I claim is:
A gate hinge of the character described comprising a body of strap iron including a U-shaped portion, the opposite members ot' which are curved upwardly to form inclined bracket bearings, and then bent perpendicularly wit-h respect to the bracket bearings to form portions for attaching to the hinge post, the said body also including a horizontally extended member that terminates in a threaded bolt shank for passing transversely through the posts, said horizontal member having an aperture and a member secured to the post having a pinpintle, the said roller bearing also having tle that extends up through the aperture portions for connecting with the lower end in the horizontal member of the U-Shapecl of the gate.
body to form a pintle, and a roller bearing `BURTON C. RUSSELL. 5 for engaging the inclined bracket portions Wvitnesses:
of the U-shapecl niemloer7 said roller bearing HELEN L. VVYMAN,
having an aperturecl ear for engaging the ADA R. ESDAILE.
