Original aliplication led January' 23, 1905, Serial No. 242,431. Divided a'm this application tiled october 20, 1910. Serial No. 588,198.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l. Chinos A. P. TURNER, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin und in the Stute of Minnesota. have invented :i certain new und useful improvement in Reinforced Concrete Construction, and do hereby dechire that the following is a full, clear7 und exact description thereof.
My invention relates to the reinforcement of concrete buildings and other structures in which reinforced concret-e enters, and my object is to produce a structure in which beams may be dispensed with and to this end my invention consists in the reinforced concrete structure having the characteristics substantially as hereinafter speciicd and claimed.
In Vthe lrawingswliligure l is :i vertical section, partly in elevation of a portion of it buildingr embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 a top plan View thereof7 showing the tloor slab reinforcement7 the tioor supporting columns being shown in horizontal tion.
The structure shown is o building having a flat plate floor, or slab, l() resting upon and from which rise columns l1, the 4floor or slab and Columns beingr monolithic, or an integral mass of concrete. Through the columns pass vertical reinforcing rods e 'bound together and which. ut their upper ends7 ii'ithin the floor or slabl, are bontor turned laterally so that, they radiate in all l directions troni the column forming u widespreading cuntaliver heed at the top ot the. column. i
The slab or iloor reinforcement 1netween the columns, consists of wlntt terni main lines oit' reinforcement. and of suo gzlelnentnl lighter reinforcement. The main lines are cmnposed of groups of rods d that run in ut lens( four directions tlirongh the slab, that is directly from column to column and ding onnlly ironi column to column. and which cross the columns und proie into the slab beyond the. sinne. The lihhter reinforce nient consists of u fabric Z of expanded metal, woven wire or net-ting or fencing7 that is, such fnbrio us is customarily us i or reinforc'eincnt purposes. Seid fabric being eX- tended tln'olughout the slab and serving. to fill in the area not occupied by the main lines of reinforcement, tends to provide for the tensile stresses more uniformly throughm out the slab than would the main inesf alone,
porting means such liricli and said fabric and die main lines of reinforcement are preferably situated 'Le-Werd the bottom of the slab nt the center, und toward the bop of the slab over the eoiuinns or supports. 6i The column rods e may direct-ly support the slab-reinforcing rods d, but other su laid upon tie forms, or steel or other equii-'uient s' ports may oe used.

5. In fiat plate and column construction of reinforced concrete, the combination of a flat plate floor slab, columns supporting the same, Wide spreading cantaliver heads over the `olumns forming circumferential cantalivers, sets of rods extending ill the slab and constituting main lines of reinforcement running directly and diagonally from column to column, said lines of reinforcement continuing beyond the column and into the slab, the rods crossing at the top of the columns and head, supplementary reinforce ment extending through the slab in the spaces between the main lines of reinforce ment and tending to distribute the tensilev stress throughout the slab.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set m hand.
