gitudinally adjustable cheek bars, a forwardly projecting nose plate having spurs and means connected to the cheek bars for fastening the muzzle to the head and behind the ears of the animal, and further consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective view of a weaning muzzle constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same in use on a colt. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the lines 33 of Fig. 2.

In the construction of my improved weaning muzzle I provide a nose piece 1 to lie above the nose and project forwardly from the muzzle of the animal, the said nose piece being made of sheet steel or other suitable metal,'being concavo-convex in form cross sectionally with its concave side lowermost and being provided at its rear corners with downwardly extending and clownwardly converging spring arms 2 which are formed integrally therewith. At the centers of the said spring arms are secured the front ends of rearwardly extending cheek pieces 3 which are also made of sheet metal and the rear ends of which are out turned, as at 4, and provided with openings 5. Each cheek piece is also provided with an outwardly projecting stud 6 which is struck up therefrom and is provided at its outer end with a transverse opening for the reception of a split pin or other simi lar device 7. The lower ends of the arms 2 are connected together by a flexible leather chin strap 8, the ends of which are here shown as secured to the lower ends of the said arms by means of rivets 9. The nose piece or shield 1 is provided on its upper side, at its outer end and also near its rear corners with pairs of angle plates 10 be tween which, at the outer ends thereof, are mounted rcvoluble studs 11 which are each provided with a plurality of radially disposed points.

A pair of check straps 12 which are made of sheet steel or other suitable sheet metal operate through the openings 5 of the outturncd guide and keeper portions 4 of the cheek pieces 3 and are provided at points suitably spaced from their front ends with adjusting openings 13 for engagement with the lug 6 of the cheek pieces so that the said cheek straps may be connected to the cheek pieces at any desirable longitudinal adjustment and the length of the muzzle varied as may be required to fit the same on animals of different sizes. The said cheek straps are provided at their rear ends with rings 14 to which are connected the ends of a throat latch 15, a head stall 16 and a bro-w band '17, the said throat latch and the head stall being respectively provided with buckles or other suitable devices 18-19 admitting of the adjustment thereof according to the size of the animal on which the muzzle is placed.

It will be understood that my improved muzzle, by reason of the spurs with which its nose plate or shield is provided, serves to effectually wean the animal on which the muzzle is placed. Owing to the provision of the downwardly converging spring arms 2, with which the nose piece or shield is provided, the said spring arms lie closely against the sides of the animals mouth and serve in connection with the chin strap and the comparatively inflexible cheek pieces and cheek straps to hold the nose piece or shield in place.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The herein described weaning muzzle, comprising a cross sectionally concavo-convex sheet metal nose plate provided at its rear corners with integral downwardly extending spring arms, said spring arms being provided at points between their ends with integral rearwardly extending cheek pieces which are provided with outturned rear portions having guide openings, and are further provided with outwardly projecting studs spaced from said out-turned rear portions, a flexible chin strap connect ing the lower ends of the downwardly eX- the cheek straps on the head of an animal tending arms, relatively inflexible cheek and spurs at the front side and at the rear straps extending through the guide openings corners of the nose plate.
