To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of I-Iillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Laststand and the spindle forming a part of one or the other is a base or shoulder upon which the bottom of the last rests. With the usual construction of last, a ferrule is fixed in the opening in the last and the spindle enters this ferrule. Great difficulty has been experienced on account of the splitting of lasts during the above named processes of lasting, heeling and leveling and also from the fact that the uppers are frequently cut and ruined by being caught "between the square edges of the last and the square edges of the base or shoulder. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a last with my device in place. Fig. 2 is a top view and Fig. 3 is a back view of my device. Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a lastequipped with my device and in place upon the spindle. Fig. 5 is a side sectional view of a modified form of my device. Figs.

A represents a last comprising a'toe section B and a heel section C. The top part of heel section C is fiat. These sections ll and C are shown as of a usual construction connect by a hinge 10 and spring 11. In the heel ortion O is a cylindrical opening 12. My protector D is formed preferably of a single piece of metal Ct uprising a fiat portion whose outlines correspond with the outlines of the flat surface of the top 15 of heel portion 0. The middle portion ofmy protector is raised at 22 and is beveled or slopes inward shown at 21 terminating in the ridge 28. Through thecenter of this raised portion and ridge 23 extends a passage 24: of ailarger diameter than the width of ridge and i-such size that the spindle will comfortably enter therein. entire protector and through a tubular extension 25. This tubular extension 25 enters opening 12 in the heel portion C-and is held in place therein by means of apin 13 which passes through the last and through tubular extension Thereby the protector D is held firmly in place and prevented from turning by a single pin near the middle of heel portion G. By this method of fastens ing, the danger of splittingthe last is much reduced.

F represents a table or bench and -G a support thereon which carries a shouldered collar which forms a base for spindle 31. As will be seen in Fig. it, the ridge 23 of protector D so rests on base 30 that it is impossible for the upper portion 40 of the shoe H in the process of lasting, heeling or leveling to be pinched-between the shoulder and the protector or between the shoulder and the last.

In Fig. 5,1 show a modified form of my device in which C is the heel portion of the last in which is an opening in which may be inserted a ferrule 51. In this case, the protector has a flat portion 52, a raised beveled portion 53 and a passage'56 substantially similar to the protector D, but ferrule 51 is not attached thereto. The protector is so held in place by means of screws 54 which enter the last that passage 56 registers with the passage in ferrule 51.

As the flat portion of the protector rests on the flat portion of the heel section, the force of any pressure is distributed and the tendency of the last to chip or split is reduced. What I claim as my device anu desire to cover by Letters Patent, is: I

1. A last and upper protector comprising a piece of metal having a flat portion which fits the flat portion of the last and a raised beveled portion which extends upward therefrom forming. a ridge, and a tubular extension opposite the raised beveled p0r tion, there being a passage through the tubular'extension and the ridge.

2. .Thecombination of a last having a flat ridge, and a tubular extension integral therewith which extends into the cylindrical opening in the last there being a passage through the tubular extension and the ridge,

together with a pin which passes through protector comprising a piece of metal havinga fiat portion which-fits the flat portion of the heel and a raised beveled portion (1 'ical passage .which registers with the lindrical passage in the last, and means attaching the protector to the last.
