hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the inven tlon, such as will enable others skilled 111 the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic feed mechanism for manually operated button setting tools and its object is to provide the same with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 1s a slde elevatlon of my devlce applied to a manually operated button set ting tool; Fig. 2 the same with the various parts in position after the button has been fed into the head of the staple setter the scale enlarged and parts broken away to show the construction; Fig. 3 the same with the various parts in position as at the close of the staple setting movement; Fig. 4C the same as at the close of the first feeding movement; Fig. 5 a detailin section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 a perspective detail of a part of the feeding mechanism.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 represents the upper jaw and 2 the lower jaw of amanually operated button setting tool, respectively provided with handles or levers 1 and 2 and pivoted to each other as at 3.
4 is a transverse head integral with the end of the upper jaw 1 in which is a holding slide 9 to yieldably engage the fabric and hold the same against the clenching anvil and retained within the head by a removable cap 5.
6 is a carriage slidable in the cap 5 in dove-tail ways on whiohcarriage is mounted the button feeding mechanism. The carriage and slide have a limited longitudinal movement controlled by a pin 23 fixed in the carriage, extending through a slot 5 in the cap and into the holding slide 9. The movement of the slide and carriage toward the jaw 2 is produced by a spring 20 within the slide and abutting against the rear end of the cap 5 and the opposite movement by engagement of the slide with the shoe and closing movement of the jaws. Fixed to the cap and close above the holding slide 9 is a staple driver 8 consisting of a strip of flat steel recessed in the end to receive the eye of the button and to engage the crown of the staple to drive the same.
To receive and guide the button and staple a head 10 is fixed on the end of the holding slide 9 and provided with suitable grooves to guide the staple and a slot to permit the eye of the button to pass there through. Projecting into the path of the eye of the button is a spring actuated yieldable pin 19 which engages the said eye and stops the same within the rear end of the slot in the head 10. '11 is a clenching anvil mounted in the jaw 2 and engaged by the staple when driven through the fabric and against the same by the closing movement of the jaws. To automatically feed buttons into this head, an inclined button chute 12 is mounted on the carriage 6 and provided wit-l1 the usual slot for the eye of the button and side grooves for the arms of the staples, being provided at the upper end with the usual means for attaching a supply tube loaded with said buttons and staples. In the bottom of this chute is an opening within which projects the yieldable spring stop 24 to hold the buttons from sliding down the chute and projecting through said opening at each side of this stop is the bifurcated end of a pusher 13 which feeds the buttons past this stop one at a time, as hereafter described. This pusher traverses pin 15 and is held in contact therewith by a spring 21 attached .to the pusher at one end and traversing an upwardly extended rear portion of the carriage at the other end which portion is provided with a projection or hump 22 which is engaged by the spring to stop the pusher after the first feeding movement thereof.
To depress the pusher and allow the same to pass the eye of the first button, shoulders 18 are provided which engage the pin 15 and depress the pusher.
14 is a yoke attached to the rear extension of the carriage embracing the button chute and pusher and supporting the pin 15. This pin also supports the spring stop 24:.
shifted to and fro by contact with the arm? at the ends of the slot.
The normal position of the parts is shown in Fig. 2 with a button and staple fed into the head 10 and held by the yieldable stop 19 the pusher 13 being below the first button of the series and with the lever 16 in contact with the arm 17 at the inner end of the slot. As the staple is clenched by closing of the jaws the parts assume the position as in Fig. 3 the driver 8 engaging the crown of the staple at each'side of the eye of the button and driving the staple through the fabric against the anvil 11 carrying the "eye of the button past the yieldable stop 19.
At the same time the carriage and slide 9 are forced back, the spring 20 being compressed. This moves the lever 16 rearwardly at its upper end carrying the pusher back with the shoulders 18 under the pin 15 depressing the pusher and carrying it with its lower end oppositethe space between. the eyes of the first two buttons.
As the levers 1 and 2 are released the spring 20 moves the slide 9 to follow and open the jaw 2. Early in this opening movement the lower end of the lever 16 is carried against the arm at the inner end of the slot and moves the pusher sufficiently to bring the shoulders 18 out of contact with the pin 15. This permits the spring 21 to force the end of the pusher 13 up into the chute to engage the lowermost staple of the series. The sliding of the shoulders 18 off the pin tends to move the pusher downward and to prevent it from prematurely throwing the button over the stop 24:. Thespring engagesthehump 22 and stops the pusher. in the position shown in Fig. 4:. A further openingmovement of the. jaws carries the lever 16 again in ,contact with the arm 17 at the end of theslot and this forces the spring 21 over the hump 22 and carries the eye of the button over the stop 2 1 whereupon the said .buttonand staple slide down to place in the head 10 against the stop 19 ready-for a repetition of the operation described.
What I claim is 1. In combination with button setting tool, a sliding carriage mounted on the tool and automatically moved thereby, a button chute mountedon the carriage and having an opening in its bottom, a yieldable stop projecting throughsaid opening and within the path of theeyes of the buttons, a pusher also projectingthrough said'opening and means for reciprocating the pusher operated by. movement of the carriage.
2. In combinationwith a button setting tool having a reciprocable holding slide, a slidable carriage connected to the slide, a button chute mounted on the carriage and adapted to supply buttons and staples to be fed into the slide, a yieldable stop on the chute to engage and hold buttons, a reciprocable pusher adapted to force the buttons past the stop, a lever to operate the pusher, and means for reciprocating the lever by movement of the carriage.
3. In combination with a button setting tool having a reciprocable holding slide, a slidable carriage connected to the slide and moved thereby, a button chute mounted on the carriage and having a bottom opening, said chute also being adapted to supply buttons and fasteners to the slide, a yieldable stop in the chute to retain buttons, a pusher projecting through said opening and adapted to move buttons past said stop, a spring to raise the pusher into the chute, shoulders on the pusher opposite said spring, a'pin engaging said shoulders to depress the pusher, and a pivoted lever connected to the pusher, operated by movement of the carrlage.

In combination with a button setting tool having a reciprocable holding slide, a slidable carriage connected to the slide and moving therewith, a button chute mounted on the carriage and having a bottom opening and also adapted to deliver buttons and staples to the slide, a yieldable stop in the chute to engage the eyes of buttons, a bifurcated pusher having one end projected through said opening and adapted to engage the crowns of staples, a spring to raise the pusher into the chute, shoulders on the pusher, a pin to engage the shoulders and depress the said end of the pusher, a pivoted lever connected to the other end of the pusher, and a fixed slotted plate engaged by said lever to operate the pusher.
5. In combination with a button setting tool substantially asrdescribed, a reciprocable carriage mounted on the tool having an inclined rear extension and automatically reciprocated by. said tool, a button chute mounted onthe carriage and having a bottom opening, an arm projecting upwardly from said extension to support the chute, a yoke attached to said. extension and embracing the chute, a yieldable detainer in the chute within the.path of the eyes of the buttons, a bifurcated pusher having an upwardly projecting end to engage the staples at each side of said eyes, a spring attached to the pusher to raise the said end into the chute, shoulders on the upper side of the pusher, a .pin inthe yoke to engage the shoulders and depressthe pusher, a lever pivoted to the arm and to the other end of the pusher, and a slotted plate fixed on the tool and engaging the lever to operate the pusher.
6. In combination with a button setting tool of the class described, a reciprocable car riage traversing an inclosed rear extension, a button chute mounted on the carriage and having a bottom opening, a yieldable stop projecting through said opening to engage the eyes of the buttons, a bifurcated pusher projecting through said opening to engage fasteners for buttons, a spring attached to the pusher to raise the end of the same into the chute, shoulders on the pusher, a pin to slidably engage said shoulders and depress the pusher, a pivoted lever connected to the pusher to operate the same, a projection on said extension to engage the spring and stop the pusher when the shoulders slip oil from the pin, and a fixed slotted plate through which the lever extends and alternately engages the plate at the ends of the slot.
