To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO TUEOKMANTEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Frame Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in the construction of the shells or cases for fastening or looking devices, such as are usually employed with bagframes, and the like; and, the invention relates, more particularly, to a novel construction of shell or case for fastening or looking devices of bag-frames, all with a view of providing a device in which the usual fastening rivets are not used in the fastening device, as heretofore.
My invention therefore has for its principal object to provide a fastening device for bag-frames, and the like, in which there are no rivets used, so as to enable the manufacturer to provide a construction of the general character hereinafter set forth, in .which the outer shell or case has a neat appearance, because there are no lines or joints shown at the points, as in the old construction, where the upset end-portions of the rivets extend through perforations in the outer shell and are burnished off.
The invention has for its further purpose to simplify the general construction of frame-catches or bag-frame fasteners, with a view of reducing the parts to a minimum, and dispensing with the use of an inner shell to which the locking post is attached, as heretofore, providing in the construction of bag-frame catch or fastener embodying the principles of the present invention, the locking post with means forming a direct and integral part of the post, for securing the latter in its operative position within the upper or sliding shell or casing of the fastener.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following de tailed description of the present invention.
The invention consists, primarily, in the novel fastener for bag-frames of the general character hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various parts as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front-side elevation of a bag frame fastener or catch, shown attached to a section or portion of a bag-frame, and embodying the principles of the present inven tion; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the bag-frame fastener or catch removed from its relation with the bag-frame, said view being made on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section, said section being taken on line 44 in said Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the upper or sliding shell or casing, with an end view of its locking post, illustrating more particularly one means of securing the locking-post in its fixed position within the said shell or casing; and Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section, taken on line 66 in said Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow :12. Fig. 7 is a collective perspective view of'the several parts or elements of the bag-frame catch or fastener, said parts being shown in their respective positions when about to be secured in their assembled relations.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now more particularly to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a chambered and preferably elongated main support or base which is surrounded by a flange 2 from which extend, at suitable intervals, suitable fastening lugs or prongs 3 which are adapted to be inserted in correspondingly placed holes or slots in one of the bag frame-sections and are bent over against the under surface of the frame-section for securing the support or base 1 in place, as will be clearly understood. In its fiat face-portion 1, the said support or base is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 5 and a transversely extending slot 6, for the purposes to be presently set forth. Sliding longitudinally upon the upper face-portion of said main support or base is a suitably formed shell or casing forming a slide or finger piece, the same comprising an outer chambered'shell or case 7, substantially of the general configuration shown in the several figures of the drawings, and its marginal outline corresponding to the marginal outline of the face-portion of the main support or base 1, so that the said parts of the device, when in their normal'locking relation, will be fitted upon each other and will have the appearance of one complete shell or case.
Fitted within the chambered part of the shell or case 7 is a locking post 8, said locking post being provided with any suitable number of curved holding or retaining members 9 which extend alternately from opposite sides of the locking-post 8, and follow the inside configuration or inner surface conformation of the shell or case 7, to its lower marginal edges as is clearly evident from an inspection of Figs. 4 and 6 of the drawings. The said members 9 form integral parts of the said post 8, and each alternate holding or retaining-member 9 is provided at its extremity with a recessed portion or groove, as 10, into and over which are bent suitably formed retaining projections or lugs 11 which extend from the lower marginal edge of the shell or case 7, thereby securely and rigidly holding the locking post 8, and the fingerpiece in rigid connection with each other.
The outer end-portions 12 of the body of the locking post 8 are provided with triangularly formed projections or lugs13 which project into and through the slots '5 of the base 1. Upon the under face-portion 1 of the base 1 is a flat band-spring or plate let, said spring havinga longitudinally extending slot 15 registering with the slot 50f the base 1, through which the triangular projections or lugs 13 pass and are then bent over, as at 16 in Fig. 2 of the drawing, thereby holding all the parts in their clesired and assembled relation to each other. The said flat band-spring 1 1 has a transverse bent-out portion or projection which rests in the transversely extending slot 6 and tends to hold the sliding fingerpiece ,in its normal position when not in operation, and to help bringit back to its normal position with surety and a snap, insuring to the operator the locked condition of the parts of the device. 7
I am aware, that various changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the appended claims. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and the parts of the same, as described in the foregoing specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of any of the said parts.
I claim 1. In a fastening device for bag frames and the like, a main support or base adapted to be secured upon a bag-frame-section, an outer chambered shell slidably arranged upon said main support or base, a locking post within said shell, curved holding members upon opposite sides of said post and being integrally connected therewith, said holding members conforming to and registering with the inner contour of said shell, and means connected with said shell and extending into holding engagement with the marginal edge-portions of said holding members.
2. In a fastening device for bag frames and the like, a main support or base adapted to be secured upon a bag-frame section, an outer chambered shell slidably arranged upon said main support or base, a locking post within said shell, curved holding members upon opposite sides of said post and being integrally connected therewith, said holding members conforming to and registering with the inner contour of said shell, said holding members being formed in their marginal edge-portions with recessed portions, and retaining lugs extending from the marginal edge-portions of said shell, said lugs being bent over so as to extend into the said recessed portions into holding engagement with the marginal edge-portions of said holding members.
3. In a fastening device for bag-frames and the like, a main chambered support or base adapted to be secured upon a bag-frame section, said support or base having a flat face-portion provided with a longitudinally extending slot, an outer chambered shell slidably arranged upon said flat face-portion, a locking post within said shell, curved holding members upon opposite sides of said post and being integrally connected therewith, said holding members conforming to and registering with the inner contour of said shell, means connected with said shell and extending into holding engagement with r the marginal edge-portions of said holding members, said locking post having a portion extending into and through said slot and being movably arranged therein, a slotted spring-plate arranged within the said support or base, and triangularly shaped fastening lugs extending downwardly from the upper portion of said post into and through the slots in said support or base and said spring-plate, the free end-portions of said fastening lugs being bent over and secured in holding engagement with portions of said spring-plate.

In a fastening device for bag-frames and the like, a main chambered support or base adapted to be secured upon a bagframe section, said support or base having a flat face-portion provided with a longitudinally extending slot and a laterally extending slot, an outer chambered shell slidably arranged upon said flat face-portion, a locking post secured within said shell, said locking post having a portion extending into and through said longitudinally extending slot and movably arranged therein, a slotted springplate arranged within said support or base, and a transversely extending projection upon said spring-plate removably arranged in said laterally extending slot, to normally hold said slidable shell in its locked relation, and triangularly shaped fastening lugs extending downwardly from the upper portion of said post into and through the longitudinal slot in said support or base and into and through the slot in said springplate, the free end-portions of said fastening lugs being bent over and secured in holding engagement with portions of said springplate.
6. In a fastening device for bag-frames and the like, a main chambered support or base adapted to be secured upon a bag-frame section, said support or base having a fiat face-portion provided with a longitudinally extending slot and a laterally extending slot, an outer chambered shell slidably arranged upon said flat face-portion, a locking post within said shell, curved holding members upon opposite sides of said post and being integrally connected therewith, said holding members conforming to and registering with the inner contour of said shell, means connected with said shell and extending into holding engagement with the marginal edgeportions of said holding members, said looking post having a portion extending into and through said longitudinally extending slot and movably arranged therein, a slotted spring-plate arranged within said support or base, and a transversely extending pro jection upon said spring-plate removably arranged in said laterally extending slot, to normally hold said slidable shell in its locked relation, and triangularly shaped fastening lugs extending downwardly from the upper portion of said post into and through the longitudinal slot in said support or base and into and through the slot in said springplate, the free end-portions of said fastening lugs being bent over and secured in holding engagement with portions of said spring plate.
