SALVATORE SANNA, OF OLINGHOUSE, NET-TADA.
Specification of ll'letters Patent.
DUPLEX OTARY STEAM-TURBINE.
Patented iuiy 9, 1912.
Application filed September 19, 1911. Sei'ial'No. 650,155.
To all 'Lc/0m t may concern.'
Beit known that I, 'SALVATORE SANNA, a citizen of thev United States, residing at Olinghouse, in the county of Washoe and State of Nevada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Duplex Rotary Steam- Turbines, of which the following is a specification. y
,The invention relates to turbines, and Inore particularly to the class ofl duplex rotary steam turbines.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a turbine in which the full steam pressure `will be utilized prior to its exhaust from the same forobtainiiig a uniform and maximum speed in the operation of the turbine.
Another-object of the invention is the provision of a turbine in which there are arranged spaced stationary and rotary vane wheels, the-rotary vane wheels being mounted upon a common shaft for driving the same, and steam will be admitted to the rotary vane wheels in successive order, thereby ,with the invention. Fig'. s is a vertical lonbination and arrangement of parts, as will behercinafter more fully described, illustrated in y.the accompanying"drawings, and
pointed out in the. claims hereunto appended. I
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of aturbinc constructed in accordance gitudinal sectional view thereof. Fipp 3 is an? enlarged .fragmentary vertical sectional View through the steam chest. Fig. ft is a plan yView of one of thel rotary vane wheels.
- Similar reference characters indicateI corresponding parts throughout the several views of-the drawings,
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the turbine comprises abase 5, upon which .are mounted vertical supporting bearings 6,
in which is journaled a rotatableshaft 7, the bearings 6 being' formed with o il pockets S communicating` with oil ducts 9, so that lubricant may be supplied to the shaft 77 60 while being rotated. Surrounding` the shaft 7 are spaced stationary vane disks 10 and' 11, respectively, the same being supported upon 'base standards 12 mounted upon the base 5, and rising vertically therefrom, the
said stationary vane disks 10 and 11 being formed on their faces with spaced annular rows of diagonally disposed steam vents 13. which cooperate with reversely disposed diagonal steam vents 14C arranged .in spaced 70 annular rows upon adjacent faces of rotary disks 15 and 1G, respectively, the vents 13 and 1.4 on bot-h the stationary and rotary disks 10 and 11--15 and 16 being concentrieally arranged with respect to the shaft 7.
The said rotary disks are fixed to the said shafts 7 to impart rotary movement thereto, in a manner presently described.
Formed on the stationary disks 10 and 11 are outwardly extending hubs 17 and 18,. the 80i latter of which surrounds the shaft 7, while the hub 17 surrounds a ,ef vernor operatin, shaft 1.9, the latter jouru..1ed, near its outer end, in a bearing Q0 fixed to a `governor end of the turbine, the governor olierating shaft 19 being` integral with one end of the shaft 7 to rotate therewith. The hubs 17 and 18 foi-in steam inlet chambers 22, and
are pro-vided' with inlet ports Q3, at theii-in- 90 ner ends, communicating` with the innermost i'ow of vents 12E formed on the inner faces of the stationary disks 10 and 1.1, so that on the admission of steam between the s aid stationary and rotary disks the latter will be 9 5 caused to rotate for transmitting' similar movement to the shaft 7 which has fixed thereto, between the said disks, a belt pulley 211, over which is adapted to be trained a belt or the like (not shown) for driving 1.00
machinery.
Fixed at the peripheries of the stationary disks 10 and 11 and on the inner faces thereof are. cylinder beads 25 which are designed to iiiclose vthe rotary disks 15 and 16 and 105 form casirigs therefor, so as to prevent the possibility of the escape of steam admitted between the stationary and rotary vane disks, in the operation of the turbine, the
said shaft 7 beine* passed centrally through 110 the cylinder heads 25 which are provided Withstutling boxes 26 surrounding the said -sland 21 supported upon the base 5, at' one 85.A
shaft to prevent the leakage of steam therebetween in the operation of the turbine.
Formed on the stationary disk 10 and the adjacent cylinder head 25, atv the peripheries thereof, is a nipple 27,',tvo which lis connected one end of a steam pipe 28, the opposite end of` which is formed with an 'elbow 29 connected with the hub 18, and communicating with the chamber 22 formed thereby, so that steam will pass from between the stationary and rotary disks 10 and 15 to the stationary y and rotary disks 11 and 16, thereby ei'ecting high and low pressure sides to the turbine.
Connected with the stationary disk 11 andl the adjacent cylinder head 25, at the periphcries thereof, is a nipple`30, to whichis connected a steam exhaust pipe 31, the latter leading to the atmosphere, so thatthe expanded or utilized steam-from the low pressure side of the turbine may be exhausted through the vsaidephaustpipe 31 t0 the atmos ere, as will b`e clearly obvious.
lv ounted upon the hub 17, at the top thereof, is a steam chest 32 with which com-I municates a steam supply\pipe 33 which is provided with the usual cut-olf valve 34 and the throttle valveA 35, the latter being-provided with a regulating arm 36,A connected i ally connected to a lifting link 41- which is panion worm also pivoted to an inertia governor mechanism 424 mounted upon a rotary counter shaft .43 journaled in a bearing'44 rising from the said governorl stand' 21, the counter shaft43- being provided with a worm gear 45 xed thereto and Awith a com-V gear 46 vfixed to. 'the governor' operating sha 19, so thgtmponexcessive rotation of the shaft 7, the governor mechanism 42 will be operated, so as to'raise the link 41 and through Ithe medium of the weighted lever 38, ad'ustable stem 37,' and the'throttle arm 36, t e said throttle valve willbe adjusted to regulate or decrease the steam supply through the inlet steam pipe 31 to the steam chest 32, as the occasion may require. L
Formed' 'n..the top of the hub 17 on the stationary disk 10 are steam inlet ports 47, the same beingprovided with valve seats 48, in which are adapted to be alternately seated balancing check valves 49, the latter boing operated upon by means of cams 50' h'xcd to the throttle operating shaft 19, these cams being timed or set, so as toalternately open the said balance check valves 49 for admission of steam from the steam chest 32 lo the chamber. 22, whence-such steam will bc delivered to thevanes 0n the Stationary and rotary disks 10 and 11 at the high pressure side of the turbine, and as the steam progresses from the center of the said disks to the peripheries thereof, it will be conveyed therefrom through the pipe 28 tween the stationary and rotary vane disks 1 11 and 16, at the centers thereof, whence the said steam will expand and pass to the peripheries of the said last-named disks-and;
Afinally discharge through the exhaii'st pipe 31 to the atmosphere.
Formed on the balance stems 51 carrying balancingpistonsworkj mg wit-hin cylinders 53 mounted upon the steam chest 32, each cylinder being formed with avby-pass 54, whereby, steamfrom the steam chest- 32 on the opening of thevalnie^ therein may pass froml one side of' the,
ton 52 through the by-pass 54 to theoppor.. site side thereof within the 'cylinder .'53, as to .exert a downward pressure upon th.
56, so that the steam between the said pist-onr 52 and the-outer end of the cylinder-53 may be' exhausted through said union. When the piston 5,2 uncovers the port 55, it simultaneously closes the inner end of the by-pass 54, thereby closing the same to prevent the possibility of steam passing,r from the steam chest 32 between the piston 52 and the outer end of the cylinder,v ItI will be noted that these check balancing valves will be eas )of operation, andthe same will exert only eirv own weight upon Vthe cams 50 whenv being operated thereby.
Carried at the outer ends of the hubs 17 v and 18 ofthe stationary vane 'disks 10 and A 11 are packing glands 57 which are ofthe-A ordina well-known construction and surround both the shaft 7 and thc governor operating shaft 19, so as to prevent leakage from the chambers 22 formed by the said hubs between the same and the said shafts.v j
Also arranged within the chambers 22 at the inner end of the hubs 17 and 18 are suitable p'ackin glands 58 which surround the said shafts 7 and 19, respectively` and work against the rotary disks 15 and 16. so as-to prevent any leakage `of steam from the s aid chambers 22 between the said rotary disks 15 and 16, and said shafts duringr the operation of the turbine.
Keyed to or otherwise secured to the f ree end of the shaft 7 is a clutch or coupling head 59, whereby an additional turbine may be connected therewith, which turbine is adapted to be of a construction, hercinbefore described, although the stationary and rotary vane disksfthereof may have the steam les vanes thereonreversely arranged with respect to the'vanes' 13 and 14, u ponthe statlonary and rotary disks and 11-15 and 16. "Thus in this manner, the shaft may be ,lA reversely rotated if desired. Of course, it is understood that both of lthe turbines will `not be operated simultaniisly, but the connection of the last'turbine with the shaftI 7 as only actiyle when itis desired to rotate the 10` shaft'. ,1n reverse direction, when the other -At opposite sides ofv the' outermost 'supptn'tin v'bearing' and keyed to theshaft are forme vend' thrust collars 60,*betwe`en which y and the adjacent faces of said vertical suportng bearings 6A are arranged bearing balls 61, which are confined within annular race-Ways 62-receiving thesame, and these `'collars 60 prevent end thrust' of the shaft 7,
A when being rotated bythe turbine.
What is claimed is: f
