Be it known that we, lViLLiAM M. NORD ENHOLD and BRACE R. Vvnxoor, citizens of the United States, residing at Stamford, in the county of F airfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keys; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to an improvement in keys, and is designed particularly as an improvement on the construction disclosed in Patent No. 8Q,)l8, granted to Emil A. Strauss, October 22, 1907.

In the patent, the key is provided with a recess in one face, the recess being closed at its ends, and a name or number plate corresponding in size and shape to said recess, is detachably secured therein by a fusible material.

The object of this invention is to provide improved means for detachably securing the name or number plate within the recess in the key, and it consists of a key head or shank having a recess, a name or number plate conforming in size and shape to said recess, and an eyelet secured within a hole through the key head or shank and provided with a flange adapted to overlap the plate at one edge and lock the same within the recess.

Our invention further consists in a key provided in its head or shank with a hole and with a recess adjacent the hole, a name or number plate conforming in size and shape to said recess, and an eyelet detachably secured in the hole and having a flange overlapping one edge of the plate within said recess.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a key showing the name or number plate in place. Fig. 2 is a view in plan of the key and the plate, its securing eyelet being removed. Fig. 3 is a View in section through the key, plate and eyelet, the latter being upset, and Fig. 4 is a view showing the eyelet threaded.

to any key having a part sufliciently large to receive the name or number plate 4, and an eyelet o. The head or shank 3 of the key is provided with a recess 6, to receive the the hole 2, the head or flange of the eyelet will overlap one edge of the plate 4 and positively lock the latter in place. Fhe head or shank of the key is preferably countersunk or recessed to receive the head or flange of the eyelet, thus permitting the latter to rest flush with the surface of the head or shank of the key. This recess is preferably formed after the name plate 4 has been inserted in the recess 6, so that v the plate will also be cut away slightly to receive the overlapping flange of the eyelet. The recessing of the plate may however be done before the plate is inserted in its recess. The eyelet may be secured in place by upsetting or riveting its outer end as shown in Fig. 3, or it may be threaded as in Fig. l. When constructed to be secured in place by upsetting or riveting, it is preferably made of thin pliable metal, so that it may be readily removed by suitable tools.

The improvement is particularly adapted for keys for safe deposit or locker locks, hotel locks, or other locks where the number of keys in use tends to confusion. case of safe deposit boxes, as an example, the renters or lessees of the boxes are continually changing or giving them up, at which time it is desirable and frequently necessary to change the looks, or the combination of the locks. When the locks are changed the names 'or number plates must be removed from the old keys and applied to the new ones. lVhere the combination of a lock is changed, a new key must be used, and if the owner of the box or locker is known by, or has a particular number, his number must be applied to the new key. This necessitates the frequent change of name or number plates to the various keys which by our improvement is made comparatively easy.

Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

1. As a new article of manufacture, a key having a recess in its face, a hole adjacent said recess, a name or number plate corresponding in size and shape with said recess, and an eyelet secured in the hole and provided with a flange overlapping one edge of the plate.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a key having a recess in its face, and a hole adjacent the recess, a name or number plate corresponding in size and shape with said recess, and an eyelet reniovably secured in the said hole and provided with a flange overlapping the adjacent edge of the plate.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a key having a recess in its face, a hole adjacent said recess and a circular recess concentric with said hole to receive the flange of the eyelet, a name or number plate fitted in said first mentioned recess and an eyelet detachably secured in the hole in the key and having a flange resting within the circular recess and overlapping one edge of the name or number plate.
