subject of the King of Great Britain. residing at Sydney. .\ew South 'ales, and Commonwealth of Australia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters. of which the following is a specification.

Gan'roszmg or glowing sparks or cinders from the stack, and such burning cinders if permitted to escape are liable to cause tireand other damage. The spark arrester in the present instance is particularly applicable to My present invention relates to improvements lIl sparkarresters and more especially to those applicable to locomotives for the purpose of preventing the escape of burning or glowing sparks or cinders owing to the strong draft induced by the exhaust steam which is discharged through the stack, and the primary objects of the invention are to provide an improved apparatus of this character which will not impair or diminish materially the draft of the locomotive furnace irrespective of whether the draft is induced by the exhaust steam during running of the engine or whether the locomotive is at rest and the draft depends upon the rising of the products of combustion, and to pro vide such apparatus with chambers which receive and collect the sparks, cinders and the like, such chambers being provided with means for conducting away the exhaust steam and waste gases which enter such collecting chambers with the sparks or cinders.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements, and combinations and arrangements of parts. all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure l is an exterior elevation of a spark arrester constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view, partly in section; Fig. 3 represents a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. l; and Fig. -l represents a transverse section on the line -l--l of F ig. 3.

Spark arresters embodying the present invention are applicable generally to steam boiler furnaces of various kinds although the invention is particularly applicable to locomotives where the strong draft induced by exhaust steam from the locomotive cylinloc nnotives, it comprising an inner tuiadar casing l which leads from the smoke-box of the locomotive and receives the prmlurb of combustion therefrom, the draft through the boiler, smoke-box and the inner chamber l being induced as usual by the exhaust nozzle 2 the outlet of which is directed axiallv of the chamber 1. The inner chamber 1 is inclosed or surrounded by an outer casing 3. the upper portion of which is preferably enlarged as shown and is covered by a top plate l which may be removably held in position by the bolts 5 to permit access to the interior of this chamber. and the top plate has an opening 6 in alinement with the inner chamber l through which the products of combustion are discharged, this opening in the present instance being shown as provided with a surrounding flange 7 to which a stack may be applied if desirable or necessary. The lower portion of the outer chamber 3 is preferably narrower than the upper portion and it forms a pair of Chambers 5' at opposite sides of the inner casing 1, these chambers 8 serving to receive and collect the sparks, cinders and other waste products it combustion from the locomotive flltnal't'. The bottoms of the chambers 8 may be provided with suitable outlets whereby the accumulated cinders may be discharged.
The upper enlarged portion of the outer casing 3 contains a pair of oppositely mounted bladed spark-controlling and arre tin members 9, each of these members embodying a shaft 10 which is journaled at its opposite ends in the opposite sides of the outer lOO sides of the inner casing 1 and these shafts are operatively connected in amanner that will insure an intereugaging of the blades of the two members. that is to say. each blade of one of the members engages between two adjacent blades of the opposed member. the two members being freely revoluble but in unison so that this relation between the members is maintained. -\n v suitable means may be provided for operatively connecting the spark members so as to maintain this relation. a connecting shaft 13 being provided in the present instance having bevel gears 1% which cooperate with bevel gears 13 on the respective ends of the shafts 10. The spark-controlling members are oppositely mounted or in opposed relation and so placed that their interengaging blades extend completely across the outlet at the top of the inner casing 1 so that the gases passing upwardly through and discharging from the inner casing 1 must either pass through these interengaging blades or. if the draft of such gases is sufficiently strong, an impulse will be imparted to the bladed members, causing these members to revolve simultaneously in reverse directions, the perforated blades then moving with the ascending gases and avoiding any material obstruction thereto. 'hen the locomotive is at rest, that is to say, no exhaust steam is discharging from the exhaust nozzle, the esca ing gases may flow freely through the perfbrated or mesh blades of the two members and will escape to the stack without encountering any sub stantial resistance. hen, however, the draft is induced by exhaust steam projected from the exhaust nozzle, the impact of such gases upon the interengaging blades of the spark-controlling members will cause these members to revolve simultaneously in reverse directions and the blades will then move with the ascendin or discharging gases although there will e no direct outletfor the discharging gases as such gases must impinge against or pass through the mesh blades. The spark-catching flanges 12 on the outer edges of the blades of the sparkcontrolling members, which flanges extend rearwardly with respect to the direction of movement of the blades, serve to retain the sparks on these members and to prevent the sparks from being thrown upwardly or through the stack owing to the centrifugal force of the revolving members. \Vhen the sparks reach positions at opposite sides of the axes of the members, they are discharged into the spark-collecting chambers 8 and these chambers 8 will also receive such exhaust steam and waste gases as accompany the sparks. In order to effectively remove the sparks from the respective revoluble members and to prevent these sparks from being thrown toward the outlet of the inner casing 1, it is preferable to provide a suitable number of stationary vertically disposed vanes ll immediately adjacent to the periphery of the respective spark-controlling member and at the inlet or entrance to the corresponding spark-collecting chamber 1 i ii I i 8. these vanes serving to draw the spark from the revoluble members and to insure their discharge into the respective collecting chambers.
The present invention provides simple-and etfective means for discharging the exhaust steam and waste products of Cilllllllbllflll which enter the chambers R with the sparks. In the present instance. a pair of diaphragms or partitions 17 are applied to the opposite sides of the inner casing 1 and they extend completely across and join with the side walls of the outer casing 3. thus forming a set of four passages 18 spaced Ltllildistantly in or about the circumference of the inner casing 1. Each partition 17 is formed with an outlet 19 leading into the respective passage 18 and an angularly di posed deflector '30 is connected to the partition17 at a point immediately above the respective outlet 19 whereby the exhaust steam and waste gases which have a tendency to rise in the spark-collecting chambers S will be guided by the deflector '20 into the respective outlets 19, such steam and gases thus entering the respective passages 18, and each of these passages 18 has a discharge 21, there being two of these discharges ateach side of the outer casing in the presentinstance. The exhaust steam and waste gases in passing out through the discharges 21 are conducted away in the presentinstance by a pipe 22 which has a pair of branches 23 which embrace the opposite sides of the outer casing, and each branch has a pair of inlets which communicate with the discharges 21. By conducting away the exhaust steam and waste gases in this manner, the draft through the inner casing 1 is notobstructed and, moreover. the revoluble spark-controlling members are substantially free of back pressure and. hence, these members will effectively receive the sparks and they will revolve easily so that the blades will move at substantially the rate of movement of the gases exhausted from the inner chamber 1, back pressure upon the exhausting gases being thereby minimized.
I claim as my invention 1. A spark arrester comprising, in combination, an inner discharge casing for the products of combustion, an outer casing forming spark-collecting chambers below the discharge outlet of the inner casing. a pair of oppositely mounted revoluble sparkarresting members above the inner casing and having mterengaging blades disposed above the outlet of the inner casing, said members being operative to discharge the sparks into said collecting chambers, and means for conducting exhaust [8tlli1 and Waste gases from the spark-collecting chambers. i

A spark arrester comprising. in combination, an inner discharge casing for the products of combustion, an outer casing forming spark-collecting chambers below the discharge outlet of the inner casing, a pair of oppositely mounted revoluble sparkarresting members above the inner casing and having interengaging blades disposed above the outlet of the inner casing, said members being operative to discharge the sparks into said collecting chambers. partitions mounted in the outer casing and forming separate steam and gas-discharging passages, said partitions having steam and gas outlets and deflectors for conducting the steam and gas into such outlets. and means for collecting and conducting the steam and gas from said passages. l. A spark arrester comprising, in combination. an inner casing for the discharge of products of combustion. an outer casing forming spark-collecting chambers. oppositely mounted revoluble members above the outlet of the inner casing having blades for catching and conveying the sparks to said collecting chambers. and vanes mounted at the periphery of each revoluble member and at the entrance to the respective collecting chamber for removing the sparks from the revoluble members and directing them into said chambers.
