BENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. dulyg, 1912.
Application filed February 9,..1912. serial No. 676,584.
To all whom e't may concern Be it known that we, Groin Konsrs and CHARLES BALAZS, subjects of the King of Hungary, residing at St. Clairsville, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented, certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification reference being had there.
in to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the objects of our invention are to provide a quick acting wrei'ich wherein simple and effective means are employed, as will be hereinafter set forth, for rapidly adjusting the wrench, and to provide a'wrench with an adjustable handle that permits of dif-.
ferent degrees of leverage being obtained.
Further objects of our invention are to provide a strong and durable nut wrench, and to accomplish the 'above results by a wrench that is simple, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to.1nanipnlatc and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended,
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the wrench, Fig. 2 a. front elevation of the same, Fig. is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line Ill-Ill of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line lV-lV of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line VV of Fig. 1.
A wrench in accordance with this invention comprises a shank 1 rectangular in cross Section and having the front side thereof provided with a longitudinal recess 2. The rear wall. of the recesshas a longitudinal slot 3 and one wall of the slot is provided with teeth The outer end of the recess 2 is open and mounted upon in said recess is a block 5 and mounted upon the outer end of the shank is a fixed jaw 6, said jaw and said block being held by rivets 'Z or other fastening means egitending through the walls of the recess 2. The jaw 6 presents a gripping surface 8 at the front side of the shank 1. The inner end of the shank 1 has a circular opening 9 and rotatably mount 5 ed in said opening is a, bearing 10 having the inner end thereof enlarged and knurled,
as at 11, and the end of the hearing, within the recess thereof, is provided with a collar 12 that retains the bearing in the opening 9. The bearing 10 is cut away, asat 10 to provide clearance for the teeth 14 of a.
Adjustably mounted in the nut 10 is'the longitudinalrod 13 having one side thereof provided with teeth or threads 14 intermediate the ends thereof. The-outer end of the rod is rotatably mounted in an opening 15 provided therefor in an adjustable jaw 16 slidably mounted upon the shank 1, said jaw having an opening 17 providing clearancefor the rear and side walls of the shank 1. The jaw 16 presents a-gripping surface 18 at the frontside of the shank, said gripping surface cooperating with the gripping surface 8 when gripping a nut or other body. The end of the rod 13, within the recess 2, has a radially disposed arm 19 that extends into the slot 3 and can be swung into engagement with the teeth 4 within said slot. Encircling the rod 13, between the nut 10 and the jaw 16, is a coiled compression spring 20 that shifts the jaw 16 toward the jaw 6 when the arm 19 is moved out of engagement with the teeth 4. v
Slidably mounted upon the inner end of the rod 13 is a handle 20 having the ends thereof provided with ferrules or caps 21. The handle 20 has a longitudinal opening 22 and a longitudinal groove '23, said opening and said groove providing clearance for the rod 13 and the teeth 14- thereof. The handle 20 has a bearing 24; and fulcrumed in said bearing is a lever 25 that has one end thereof bent and toothed to extend through an opening 26 in the handle 20 and engage the teeth 1d of the rod 13. The opposite end of the lever 25 is pressed by a flat spring 27 secured to the handle 20 and engaging the inner side of said handle, said spring retaining the lever normally in engagement with the rod 13. The teeth 14' extending in the groove prevents the handle 20 from rotating upon the rod 13, and'by pressing in proximity to the inner end of the shank.
When the handle 20 is rotated, therod 13 noh comprising a shank having a 'Llull i recess in the front side thereof, -e rear of said shank having a longi- 20 tuoinal slot formed therein with one of the walls of said slot toothed, a fixed jaw carinsane-a ried by the outer end of said shank, an adjustable jaw slidably mounted upon said shank and extending into the recess thereof, a toothed rod rotatably mounted in the in- 25 her end of said shank and rotatabiy mount ed in said adjustable jaw, an arni oarried by the outer end of said rod and extending" into the slot of said shank to engage the toothed wall thereof, a coiled spring enoir- 30 cling said rod within the recess of" said shank between said adjustable jaw and the inner end of said shank, and'a handle oarried by the inner end of said ro'd.
In testimony whereof we affii: our signa- 35 tures in the presence of two Witnesses. GYULA KOESIS. CHARLES BALAZS.
