HAW- THORNE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Plymouth, in theoounty of l/Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Targets, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to a target particu larly designed for either outdoor or indoor shooting, andconsists in the novel and simple construction thereof, in the peculiar an rangcment and combination of parts, and in various details of construction and in their arrangements and combinations as will be more fully hereinafter setforth and claimed.

In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section therethrough; Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the removable target; and Fig.4 is a similar view of a modified construction of target.

Arranged within the casing to extend across the front opening is a metallic plate C, which constitutes a permanent target, the proper target markings being placed as indicatcd at aupon the front face thereof. This plate is preferably dished inwardly, as shown in Fig. centrally apcrturcd at b, forming a bulls eye, and the side and top portions are cred in any suitable manner to the inner face of the casing front about the marginal portions of the opening. the parts being proportioned so that the gong will be opposite the target opening, as shown.

G represents removable target of penctrable material, preferably cardboard, detachably secured to the casing front at a distance from the permanent target, as disclosed in Fig. 2. This latter target serves not only as a means for recording the shot which passes therethrough, but also acts to preventthe rebound of the bullet or other missile into the room after striking the permanent tamet. The preferred means of attachment of the movable target to the casing is corner clips G secured to the front face of the casing.

In indoor shooting, the removable target is preferably used for the purpose, as before pointed out, primarily for preventing the rebound of the bullet. It will be obvious, however, that where it is not desired to record the shot, or where the shooting takes place outdoors, the device is capable of use without the removable target member, the gong or other indicator being properly sitioncd in either instance to record bu ls eye shots.

The target is especially designed for use in connection with air gunsshooting buckshots or bullets, and for preventing the flattening of the bullet or shot, and thereby allowing the same to be used over and over again. I surface the permanent tar et with yielding material, as tor instance a ayer of felt, indicated by the reference-letter H. This modified form of target is shown in Fig. 4. The felt maybe secured to the per mancnt plate in any suitable manner, and the target markin s ma be applied directly thereto instead oii'to t e plate member, as before described.

What I claim as my invention-is,--

i. The combination with a box casing having an opening in the front thereof, ota permanenti'arget formed-0f an inwardly dished plate arranged within the casing and secured to the casing front about the open ing, therein, said plate having the body portion thereof comparatively flat and provided with a central. aperture, a gong within the casing rearwardly of and in ulinemcnt with an opening in the permanent target,

The combination with a box casing having an opening in the front thereof, and a permanent target formed of an inwardly dished plate arranged within the casing and secured at its top and side edges to the easing front about its opening therein, said plate being separate from the front at its lower edge and provided with a centrally apertured portion the body portion of the plate being flat, a gong within the casing rearwardly of and in alinement with the opening in the permanent target, a target of penetrable material arranged upon the casing front across the opening therein, and corner retaining clips on the casing front- 15 for detachably engziging the corners of the penetrable target.
