Description

l antdtattg i To `.all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, ALBERT H. Law, ofthe city and county of SanFrancisco, State of California, have invented an'Improve-d Anchor; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are "suficentito enable any personskilled in' the` art or science to'whichit Vmost nearly Vappertains to make and; use my said inventionerl improvements without further invention or experiment. y y
My ,improvements relate `to that class oi' ships anchors in which the arms orifiukes revolve simultaneonsly from side to side oi the shank, turning in the crown-piece or end` of. the shank; and they consist, nist, in an improved; construction of nukes 'or holding-palms, in order to more completely adapt them to the purpose for whichA they are intended; and,"'secondly, `in 'connecting the two parts of the jointed shank by safety-chains and; links, as will be set forth below. k y
-In order to more fully-"illustrate and explain my improvements, reference is hadin the ibllowing description to the `drawings accompanying `this specification, in which-f l l Figure l is a side view'of my improved anchor; Figure 2, Aa top-view; and ,y
Figure 3, a cross-section of one of the ilulies, at the `linezvzton'ligl. y
, A represents that-portion of the shank-of my nnchor in which the arms 'or iukes B revolve.
The arms are made in two separate pieces, Vthejourends of the shank-piece A being formed on one of thearms, and being of suiicient length to enter a socket in the opposite arm, where the two are secured together by a boltwor. rivet, a. l A l On the crown ofthe shank, at a suitable point for stopping the revolution of the flakes, are projections, b, on eachside, against which lugs or'projections, d, on l the arms, strike, and, by this means, stop the lukes `when they have turned-tothe proper angle for taking hold of the ground.
shankTA by means of a suitable rivet or bolt, e, and at apoint between the middlefof the two shanks and the extreme end of the shankpiece A', to which the cable is secured.
. nal which passes thronghthe circular aperture in the TheJ shank-piece or extension A'is united to the rALBnRTfn.' Lau-3.0i? SAN FRANcIsco, cAaIroRNIA.:

Thechedule referred Vto in these Letters Patent and making part of the saine deeper hold upon the groundby shortening the-length .of the shank, and, when the strain is on the'cable, it will stand at au angle to the shank A, as shown, and, i
consequently, give a downward pull on the lukes, and not aJifting pull, as is the case when thc solid shank is used.
Two links D are secured to the end of the shank A, near the joint, by means of a strong bolt or rivet,` one oi' the links being on each side oi the shank.
Strong chains, E, are secured .to these links, and extend forward to near the extreme end of the shankpiece A', Vwhere they are alsosecnred to a bolt, g.
l These chains serve, in case the bolt which unites the two shank-pieces break, to still hold `upon the main portion of the anchor, and prevent the vessel frombeing turned loose. Theyalso serv'e'in securing the anchor' to the cat-head, a means of raising it to' a more convenient p osition.Y
y The palms are composed oi `three wings, t Vi two of which' are in `,the same plane, forming the main y there arc no projections'upon it which will hinder the free lmovement of the cable.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 1. The links D, secured to the shank-piece'A', and connected to the shank-piece A' by means oi'the chains E, substantially as andvfor the purpose set claimed by me, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.

The extension A' permits ythe dukes to take a In witness that lthe above-described invention is .p
