To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, NORTH DowLrNe, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Flash-Light Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an electrically cont-rolled fuse apparatus for firing powder to produce a flash-light for photographic purposes; and in such connection, my invention has for its principal objects, first, the constructive arrangement of the apparatus; second, the portable telescoping character of the apparatus; third, in conjunction with the telescoping features the convenient and quick adjustments of parts to position, without aecting circuit connections with the fuse point of the apparatus arranged to permit of the firing of powder therefrom; fourth, the provision of the apparatus with means to enable the testing of the circuit before firing the powder, thereby to be assured in advance of the firing of the powder that the apparatus is in required safe condition to fire the powder so as to produce a flash-light therefrom; fifth, the provision of such a portable apparat-us with a detachable battery, for furnishing1 the current for the fuse point adapted to lire the powder; sixth, the provision of such an apparatus with internal separable members as well as an eX- ternal sectional casing for providing conductors from a battery to the fuse point, in which is included an audible or sight testing device for the circuit prior to actual ring of the powder ;v and seventh, to the provision of such an apparatus with features and details in constructive arrangement to be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
My invention stated in general terms, consists of a portable electrically actuated as well as controlled flash-light apparatus constructively arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope of my present invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connecsaid invention. Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional view through the same, showing the detail arrangement of internal members thereof. Fig. 8, is a perspective view enlarged, of the powder container and fuse point located in the bottom thereof, showing one form of fuse point connections therefor. Fig. 4, is a view partly in vertical section through the powder container and fuse point connections of the same, and in broken sectional elevation the standard and internal telescoping members thereof in electrical connection with the fuse point of said container. Fig. 5, is a side elevational view of a broken section of the standard, and in side elevation a detachable battery and signaling device, showing the same in electrical connection with internal and external members of said standard and the electrical connections to a manual operating device. Fig. 6, is a perspective view of one type of a fuse piece, composed of recessed metal pieces having mica between them, for inserting about binding posts of the fuse point of the powder container of Figs. 3 and 4. Fig. 7, is a vertical sectional view through the manual operating device intended to be included in the battery circuit, showing the push-buttons for respectively, testing the said circuit before firing powder of the container from about the fuse point therein; and Fig. 8, is a diagrammatic view of a divided battery circuit in which a buzzer or other signaling device is included and with respectively, push-buttons for testing the device before firing, and for hashing powder from a container, included in said battery circuit.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly Figs. 1 and 2 a, is a tubular sectional casing constituting a standard, provided with a series of hinged legs al, connected by means of links a2, with a runner a3, in order to readily permit of folding the legs against the said standard, when the latter is not in ed to be adjustably held thereto by means of' t tightening screw a7, extending through a collar as, carried thereon, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

alg, and so that the mica is exposed between the said strips or pieces, for example, as clearly shown 1n Fig. 5, or simply a piece of readily fusible wire, not shown, may be used and placed in connection with the binding posts c1 and c2, of the fuse point c, in the powder trough 0S, so that when the current is applied to the cartridge at the fuse point c, the powder will be instantly flashed.

In Fig. 8, are shown the circuits .10 and 12, from the battery b4, to the push-button 57, and its contact, and in which circuit 12, `is included the binding posts c1 and c?, with the fuse-point c, and at which point the powder is placed, in a container, to be flashed therefrom. From the battery b4, the circuit is divided through the buzzer b3, to the push-button 3, when the line 1l, is closed with the line 12, to actuate the buzzer for testing the device, without affecting the circuits 10 and 12, through the binding posts c1 and c2, with the fuse-point c, to lire the powder of the container thereat.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a flash-light apparatus, a foldable standard having telescoping internal and eX- ternal sections arranged in a battery circuit, a ypowder container having fuse points for a cartridge' in said battery circuit and a manually operable circuit closing devicefor closing the circuit to fire said cartridge in combination with means for testing said circuit adapted to be included in said circuit by the closing of a second manually operablecircuit closing device.
2. In a Hash-light apparatus, a foldable standard having telescoping internal and external sections arranged in circuit with a battery, a powder container having a fusepoint in said battery circuit, a signaling device adapted to be included in circuit from said battery with a circuit closing device for testing said apparatus and a circuit closing device to establish a circuit from said battery with said fuse-point which excludes said signaling device, for firing powder from said container.
