Description
1). I. DOMIZI. CLOSING AND OHUCKING DEVICE FOR PISTON RINGS. APPLIUATION FILED MAR.1B, 1911 Patented July 9, 1912.
Witwmozo DAVID E DOM/Z! UNITE @ATEg PAENT FFKQE,
DAVID F. DOMIZI, OF FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLOSING AND CHUOKING DEVICE FOR PISTON-RINGS.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID F. DoMIZI, citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closing and Chucking Devices for Pistonltings, of which the following is a specification.
The object, construction and operation of my invention are herein set forth with sulficient clearness to enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the drawings which form a part hereof, the va rious figures contained in said drawings being as follows Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved closing and chucking device for pistonrings, portions thereof being broken away to expose other portions to view. Fig. 2 is an edge view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my device in the operating posit-ion, and showing the same in connection with an improved chuck for piston rings, which chuck is fully described in an application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial Number 615,37 9 filed March 18, 1911.
In the manufacture of what is commonly known as snap rings for pistons of en gines of various types, pumps, compressors for gas and air, and various fluid-actuated appliances, it is necessary to the proper and efficient performance of such machinery, that said rings be accurately and properly finished, and among the operations to be performed in such finishing are the cutting out of a portion of the ring, closing the same, then refinishing the periphery of the closed ring to a true circle, so that it will have a true bearing at all points, against the wall of the cylinder in which it operates.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for the closing of said rings when they are to be placed in a chuck for the final finishing, as above stated.
My device consists of a pair of levers, 1, 1, of substantially identical construction, each of which is provided with a slot 2, 2, at its inner, or actuating end. Plates 3, 3, are positioned upon either side of said levers to form a support therefor, and fulcrum-pins 4, 4, are passed through said plates and said levers. Plates 3 are extended somewhat beyond the actuating ends of said levers and Specification of Letters Patent.
AppIication filed March 18, 1911.
Patented July 9, 1912. Serial No. 615,380.
are adapted to form a support or hearing for, and to conform substantlally to a portion of the periphery ring 5 which is being operated upon. A wire 6, of suitable length to encircle said ring, is attached at its respective ends to the actuating end of said levers in such a manner that said wire crosses approximate to said levers. From the fulcrum points 4: said levers are carried outward and suitably conformed into han dles 7, 7, arranged for easy and convenient manipulation. A stop 8 is provided to limit the convergence of the actuating ends of levers 1. A pin 9 is inserted through plates 8 to retain the ends of wire 6 in the slots 2.
In operating my improved closing and chucking device, the wire 6 is caused to encircle the ring, then by gripping the handles and causing them to converge the opposite, wire-engaging, or actuating ends of said levers are caused to diverge, thus contracting the circle formed by said wire, which causes the points of the ring, where a portion has been cut out, to meet and close, and when the ring is properly closed, a chuck 10 may be caused to clamp and hold the same during the final finishing operation.
Because of the flexibility of the contracting or gripping wire 6, and the consequent conformity of the same to the entire circumference of the ring, said ring is evenly and truly acted upon throughout its entire circumference, and no distortion is caused, such as is quite inevitable with other more rigid appliances now used for this purpose.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is y 1. A closing and chucking device for piston rings consisting of the combination of suitable plates, levers pivoted to and between said plates, a wire loop having its end portions crossed, and one of its extremities attached to the actuating end of one of said levers and its other extremity attached to the actuating end of said other lever, said plates being extended beyond the actuating ends of said levers and arranged to conform to and form a bearing point for a portion of the periphery of the engaged ring.
2. A. closing and chucking device for piston rings consisting of a pair of levers secured together by suitable pivotal means in proximity to one end thereof, a flexible member having its ends attached to said ends of said levers respectively, and arranged to encircle a piston ring for the purpose of closing same by a manipulation of said levers, and means attached to said levers adapted to conform to and form a bearing for a portion of the periphery of. such ring. 10 In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
