Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALvIAN R1 DEPUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niles, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip-Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to whip sockets and has for an object to provide novel interior jaws which may be easily and quickly manipulated to lock the whip against being pulled from the socket.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for normally holding the jaws against lockingly engaging the whip, so that under ordinary conditions the whip will be loosely held within the socket as usual.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the whip socket. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the whip socket showing the jaws in normal position for loosely holding the whip, and dotted in one of the intermediate steps of their movement to operative position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the socket with the jaws shown in operative position for locking the whip against removal. Fig. 4: is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4-4 Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 55 Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail perspective view of one of the jaws.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates a whip socket of ordinary character having openings 11 arranged on diametrically opposite sides near the throat of the socket.
Arranged in upright position within the socket are two similar substantially V- shaped springs 12 which are suflicient in length to extend from the throat to nearly the bottom of the socket and have their apices confronting each other. Each spring is equipped near the upper end with a lug 13 which projects through the related opening 11 in the socket. These lugs support the springs within the socket and form means for manipulating the springs as will presently be described. The springs are provided at the lower ends with inwardly bent overlapping tongues 14 which are terminally formed with semicircular rabbets 15.
Arranged interiorly of the socket and on opposite sides thereof are helical springs 16 these springs being secured to the apices of the springs or not as desired, and being fixed to the socket through the instrumentality of securing plates 17 which are fixed in position through the instrumentality of screw pins 18. These springs normally hold the lips of the leaf springs overlapping so that the butt of the whip may bear upon a substantially continuous surface under ordinary conditions. When it is desired to lock the whip against removal, the lugs 13 are compressed, and during this movement of the parts the apices of the leaf spring will fulcrum upon the whip whereupon the lips or jaws as they may be called will be moved outwardly relatively to each other and permit of the whip being thrust down through the semicircular recesses until the butt of the whip bears upon the bottom of the socket. Upon release of the lugs, the jaws will be closed upon the whip butt above the bead thereof. To hasten this closing action of the jaws, I provide a substantially semicircular leaf spring 19 which embraces the jaws at their apices as clearly shown.
