To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. STEPHEN: SON, a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful l'mprovement in Track-Fastenings, of which the following is a full, clear,.and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a sectional view showing one form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; iigs. 3 and at are views which are similar to Figs. 1 and 2, respectively, and which illustrate a modification; Figs. 5 and 6 are, respectively, plan and side views of one of the key members shown in Figs 1 and 2; Figs. 7 and 8 are-similar views of one of. the key members shown in Figs. 3 10, are respectively,
plan. and side views of the auxiliary member shown in Figs. 3 and My invention has relation to track fastenings and involves a novel application of the bendable key device which I have described and claimed in my Patent No. 1,010,971, dated December'5, 1911.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown two different embodiments thereof,'and which will now be described, it being premised,
. however, that the invention is susceptible of various other, embodiments withinthe scope 4 of the appended claims.
Referring first to that form of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2, 5 and 6, the numeral 2 designates a track rail, and 3 a tieplate member adapted to be spiked or otherwise secured to one of the track ties and forming a seat for the rail 2. This tieplate member is formed at one side of the rail with and base-engaging lip 4, and at the opposite side of the railhas the undercut projections 5 and 6 atopposite end portions thereof. The inner beveled faces of these projections diverge in opposite directions from the longitudinal" center line of ..,the rail. 8 and 9 designate two bendable key members, these. two members being driven in opposite directions between the faces of the rail and the respective projections 5 and 6. Each of the key members is formed at its inner end with a reduced bendable extension 10, which, as the key is driven to its seat, is adapted to engage an The manner in outwardly curved deflecting passage 11, which is formed between the end portion of the projection and a central projection 12, of the tie-plate member. Each of the keys is formed with a driving end, and also preferably has a driving pro jection 14, extending upwardly from its body portion, the latter projection forming means by which the key can be driven in an unseating direction. Each of the keys is preferably formed with an inwardly eX- tendinglip 15, engaging over the adjacent edge of the base flange of the rail.
The operation will be .readily understood.-
The two keys 8 and 9 are driven from opposite directions and as they are driven, their bendable extensions engage the de-' fleeting passages and are therefore, by the act of driving, bent or deflected outwardly to form the locking or,clench portions 10.
are engaged with 'the tie-plate effectively prevents their Working loose in service, and forms an exceedingly practical and efficient securing device, as more fully described in my said patent. By employing the two keys driven in opposite directions, a very secure grip is effected with the base of the rail, so that the device acts as an anticreeper, preventing endwise movement of the rail in either direction.
The outer faces of the keys are beveled to correspond to the bevel of the inner faces of the projections 5 and..6, so that any upward movement of the keys is prevented.
If it is desired to remove the keys at any time, this can be readily done'by driving with suflicient force on the projections 14:,
in an unseating direction.
The modifications shown in Figs. 3, 4,7,
8, 9 and 10 differ from the form first described, in that, instead'of driving the keys into direct'engagement with the edge of the rail base, I employ an intermediate member 17, having an upper inwardly extending lip -18, engaging over the base flange of the rail and having lugs 19, at its lower edge,*which extendunderneath the edge of the rail base. The keys are driven between the outer side of this intermediate member and the undercut faces of the angular member and are clenched by the act-of driving in substantially the same manner as in the construction of Figs. 1 and 2, except that one wall of the deflecting channels is formed by the head 13, at its outer which these clench portions transverse grooves or recesses 21.
It Will be obvious that the form of the driving keys, the manner of forming the defleeting channels for the bendable end portions thereof, and the general form of the tieplate may be varied Widely Without departing from my invention.
I claim:
1. A track fastening, comprising a base member having means thereon for engaging one edge of the base flange of the rail and having at the opposite side of its rail-seating portion upward projections Whose inner faces diverge in opposite directions from the longitudinal center line of the rail, and fastening means including key members driven in opposite directions against said projections, each of said key members having a bendable portion at its inner end, and means for engaging and bending said portions as the keys are driven, substantially as described.
2. A track fastening, comprising a base member having means thereon for engaging one edge of the base flange of the rail and having at the opposite side of its rail-seating portion upward projections Whose inner faces diverge in opposite directions from the longitudinal center line of the rail, and fastening means including key members driven in opposite directions against said project-ions, each of said key members hav ing a bendable portion at its inner end, and means for engaging and bending said portions as the keys are driven, said projections having undercut inner faces, substantially as described.
3. A track fastening having a tie-plate provided.
track tie, saidplate having a rail-seating with means for securing it to a portion formed with rail-gripping means at one side and With key-seating projections at its opposite side, said projec i es having their inner faces extending at re erse angles to the longitudinal center line of the tieplate, and fastening means comprising oppositely driven keys having bent or defleeted portions in locked engagement with the tie-plate, substantially as described.
4. A tie-plate'having a rail-seating portion and at one side of said portion key-. seating projections having their inner faces extending at reverse angles to the center line of the plate and having key-deflecting means intermediate said. projections, substantially as described.
5? A tie-plate having a rail-seating portion and at one side of said portion, keyseating projections having their inner faces. extending at reverse angles to the center line of the plate and having keydefiecting means intermediate said projections, said projectionshaving undercut inner faces, substantially as described.
6. A track "fastening comprising a ticplate member having a rail-seating portion, rail-gripping means at one side ofsa'id portion, key-seating projections at the other side of said portion, said projections having their inner faces inclined in opposite directions, a rail-engaging member, and keys driven in opposite directio s between 7 5 said projections and the rail-engaging member, together iyvitlfmeans for bending and thereby locking portions of said keys as they are driven, substantially as described.
