Description
i JULIUs e.v HINTz, JR.,N
ateatfdiiiie or CINCINNATI, oIIIo.-
Letters APatent No. 103,183, dated May `1-7', 1870.
i IMPROVEMENT IN PERMITTATION LOCKS.
i The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and' makingpart of the same l 'Ifo all whom ift may concern;
Be it known that I, J ULIUs C. HINTz, Jr., of' Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton aud'Stateof Ohio,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Permutation Locksffor Burglar-prootSafes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a f ull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings making part of this specification.
My invent-ion consists in "an `improvement'inade on` the permutation lock described in thespecication i accompanying yLetters Patent No. 71,373, and granted to Charles Fleschthe 26th day of November, 1867,
I and relates to an` improveddevicel for sustaining the dog-lever, so as to prevent the dog from resting ou the combination wheels in any position of the safe.
4'Figure 1 is a perspective viewof my improved lock, `with the back .plate of the case removed to show the works of the lock.
Figure 2 represents a portion of the lo k when partly ended up. Y It has been found iu. practice that the weight H of the said Fleschlock performed its function perfectly when the lock was in its normal position, but that when the lock was tipped, in the manner shown in fig. 2, it would fail t-o4 pass` underV the fly m, and leave the dog resting on the combination wheels.
To overcome this defect in the saidFlesch lock, I
employ'two weights, one on either side of the ilym, and so suspended that if the safe be so tipped as to reiease the one from operating, the other is thereby brought into operation.
These weight-s in the drawing are respectively des-` ignated H and H', and are each independently pi voted at P.
Then the lock is iu its normal position, as shown in fig. 1,V the bearing of the weight H strikes under -the fly on., and holds the dog-lever elevated. `In this position of the look the Weight H is in operation.
If, now, the lock should be tipped, asshown iu iig.
2, the weight H will not strike under `the ily m, and, ofcourse, will' not hold up the dog-lever But, in this v case, this function is performed by the weight H', as is readily seen from the drawings.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s-L- y The employment, in a permutation lock, of the two weights H and H', substantially as and for the pur'- pose hereinbetorc set forth.
` J. C..HINTZ, JR.
