To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RALPH T. OvnnroN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Staatsburg, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain Blacking- Brushes, of which the following is a speelfication.

This invention relates t'o improvements in brushes and the same is primarily adapted for employment as a dauber for shoes, stoves and similarv articles to be polished, but of course the device is capable of being employed for other purposes, such as painting or theplike. p d

The principal object of the present invention is top ovide a fountain brush which is of an entre relyT simple construction, which -has a valve for regulating the flow of the liquid to the brush from the reservoir and which pro "des means whereby the said reservoir ma `be easily and quickly removed for'rellin-g the same.

With the above and other objects in view, which will appear asthe description progresses, the invention. resides in the novel construct-ion and combination ofv parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fountain brush constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 isa bottom plan view, the bristles being removed to more clearly illustrate thel structure of the valve.

In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates the improved fountain brush. This brush 1 comprises a handle 2 having one of its ends enlarged and rounded so as to provide for the reception of the bristles 3. This enlarged portion, designated by the numeral t is formed with a central orifice or opening communicating with the bristles, and this openin is preferably reinforced through the me ium of a metallic tube, the latter having its lower extremity provided with threads 6 and its bottom portion formed with a valve seat 7. The valve seat 7 is provided upon both its inner and outer surfaces with suitable gaskets leather or some other suitable yieldable material. This reservoirdias one of its ends provided with a reduced cylindrical vpipe extension 9, the same being provided with threads 10 which are adapted to co-act with the 'threads 6, and the, mouth of the said extension is adapted to bear against the inner gasket so as to form a liquid-proof connection between the handle and the reservoir. When it is desired to remove the reservoir from the handle. 2, when the device is being packed for refilling, shipment, etc., the threaded tubular eX- tension may be provided with any suitable cap, which in this instance, it has not been deemed necessary to illustrate. The under face of the enlargement l directly below the valve seat is provided with a hinged valve 11. This valve -11 comprises preferably a circular plate or disk and is pivoted adjacentv its inner end or that portion nearest the handle of thedauber as designated by the numeral 12. The central portion of the said valve is formed with a ball 13, and pivotally connected with the said bail is an operating rod 14. The inner face of the valve may be provided with a coating of some suitable material, such as rubber or the like, so as to iit tightly upon the lower gasket provided by the valve seat. The rod 14 is slidably mounted within an eye 15 formed'- upon the under face of the handle adjacent its enlargement, and the extremity of the said rod 1s formed with a loop or other suitable nger grip 16 so that the rod may be slid to open the valve. The rod 141 is further provided with an integrally formed collar 17,- and positioned between this collar and the eye 15 is a helical spring 18. This spring 18 is adapted to eXert pressure between the eye and the collar, so as to normally retain the valve in its seated or closed position, Vand thus preventt-he leakage of the liquid contained within the-receptacle 8, except when the rod is operated so as to 19 within which the liquid may be received and distributed to the remainingbristles of l the brush when the latter is operated.
